quilt art
a book with a text written by one of the most important art critics. Finally quilts seen as art pieces. An incredibly beautiful collection of amish quilts to show you the world of this religious group artistic crafts. If you look for new ideas for your quilting palette, don't miss this book.

An excellent investment for lovers of Amish quilts.
Amish: The Art of the Quilt by Robert Hughes chronicles the quilt collection at Esprit corporate headquarters in San Francisco. Begun haphazardly by Doug Tompkins in 1971 as a way to cover bare office walls, it has evolved into a showcase of exquisite examples of Amish artistry.

Robert Hughes writes a concise history of the Amish people and their distinctive quilts. But best of all are the 9" by 9" full-color plates of 82 representative quilts. Julie Silber, who became the collection's curator in 1983, shares her comments on each quilt, pointing out its adherence to or deviation from Amish tradition.

This book represents an excellent investment for all lovers of the vibrant colors and intricate stitching so characteristic of Amish quiltmaking.

Not a film history but a book about DOING film history
This is a great book, especially helpful if you are trying to learn how do do historical research. The author, himself a well-respected film historian, reviews several established formats (eg. economic history, social history, technological history) then offers a guide for those trying to do this sort of work. Especially useful for the film instructor or graduate student.

Beautiful, perfect book
This series of books is always outstanding for the bunch of pictures it contents. But the text equals the image, there's a lot of research for each movie De Niro's done -critic-guru Pauline Kael's comments among others-, and a few insights on the flaws of some of his movies, that may give you the right impression that this author knows some things about craftsmanship.

An excellent introduction to forest permaculture
This book argues for a better, more sustainable, and ultimately more sane way to farm: forest permaculture (forest farming). Forest permaculture is a technique of planting long-lived trees typically together with shrubs and herbs or grasses in a multi-tier ecosystem that achieves a steady state and produces food year after year without plowing or tilling, without the need for any farming machinery, and without any herbicides or fertilizers. This technique usually produces much higher yields than conventional farming, and it can be adapted to most climates, from temperate to equatorial. Writted by two well-known experts who have devoted their lives to advancing these techniques, this book is packed with excellent arguments, examples, and references, including a very comprehensive bibliography and list of organizations working in the area. It is a great introduction to the subject, although probably not a complete how-to guide. Nonetheless I think anyone who wants to know more permaculture or is considering adopting the same techniques needs to have this book handy. Also, this book would certainly be of great interest to anyone interested in the ideas and philosophy of E.F. Schumacher (author of "Small is Beautiful").

Very helpful information
This book is an overview of what is needed to create video productions using a computer system. The authors discuss each component needed to create a video as well as the different types of videos that can be produced. There is information for the amateur and the professional. There is a very helpful appendix listing software and hardware products and a glossary of desktop video production terms. I found it easy to read and understand. Now I am eager to try out PC video production.
