A collection of intense and powerful images
Winner of the 2002 Morse Poetry Prize, All The Blood Tethers is a collection of intense and powerful images crafted by the award-winning poet Catherine Sasanov illustrating and evoking the severe side of Roman Catholicism, life in the brutal city, wandering past veils of death, and so much more. "Walk into the patio. / Look up at the stars. / No one's left / to decipher God's language / held just out of reach. / The royal cosmographers / died centuries ago."
Blood Tethers deserving of more than Poetry Prize
There are few books of poetry that so directly speak to the reader as the poems in "All the Blood Tethers" do. This book is the much deserving winner of the prestigious Samuel French Morse Poetry Prize. However, this book deserves more then prizes. Ms. Sasanov has created a world so personal that it transcends many poets' attempts at communicating inner soul. This book allows the reader to feel these poems inside their own bodies. Ms. Sasanov's voice is strong and beautiful. The poems are at once real and tied to the earth as they are soaring to the heaven. This book deserves to be widely studied and discussed. It deserves to be taught and pondered. It deserves to be read.

The Elgar Companion to Institutional and Evolutionary Economics
Published in Hardcover by Edward Elgar Pub (December, 1994)
Amazon base price: $265.00

Important reference, various authors
The book comes in two volumes and consists essentially of solicited articles on various topics central to or important in institutional and evolutionary economics. The books therefore have entries on topics such as lock-in effects, Thorstein Veblen, old and new institutional economics, etc generally written by people who are active in research in that area.
The book is terrific for orienting oneself in these growth areas of economic research, and would be an important reference for university libraries. At the price, it would be prohibitive for most students but would be useful for academics specializing or developing an interest in this area.
The entries are followed by a bibliography to assist you in chasing up further levels of detail as required after reading an entry of interest.
Some entries (Eg Macroeconomics) have several entries from several authors, and it is quite interesting to see the different points of views taken.

The Gold Standard of Ethics
Warren is adamant in his plea to members of the Council of the Law Society. "...what 'occasion sudden' may not arise, to test your fitness, or probably demonstrate your incapacity?" His point is to prepare before practice, to stand ready to face any event, and to swear holy oath to the Facts.

Magisterial, fair, but not the best way
Make no mistake: Robbins knows his stuff, he's fair, correct, and surprisingly open-minded. However, this is a transcription of lectures, and the syntax is contorted. He interrupts the flow of every other sentence to insert some qualifier or oral footnote, and the effect can be maddening. This is too much to read for the depth of treatment you will actually get. If you do read it, you will get a pretty swell reading list, but the material is definitely weighted in favor of antiquarian literature and ancient disputes. I personally found it a pleasant read, because I like old books and economics, and I felt a certain affection for the grand old man, but unless you share these tastes, you're bound to be frustrated
Lectures
This is a collection of lectures given at the LSE. So DON'T think it is a history. Nevertheless, it is a comprehensive journey from aristotle's economica thru the modern era. Good as a reference. Not bad as a read -- but be aware you are reading a transcribed lecture and adjust your expectations accordingly.
Outstanding summary of economic thought!
A well-organized and well-considered series of concise lectures are codified in this book. This is a substantial, but not overwhelming, chronology of the more influential contributors to economic history and thought.

A real dissapointment
Foodservice Cost Control using Microsoft Excel was a real disappointment. The first few chapters led me to believe that the entire book was structured as a tutorial with a lesson in the beginning and spread sheet examples at the end. The was true for several chapters but fell through in chapters 6 and 7.
Another major shortfall is that rather than generating new Microsoft Spreadsheet it appears that they simply copied the original spread sheets from the precursor of the is book (Foodservice Cost Control with Lotus 123, for the DOS version of Lotus) and converted them to DOS style sheets with no Windows formatting. The content of the book is very good but the editing and conversion over to a Excel version is very disappointing. For an almost $50 softcover book I think they could have spent a little more time!
