A Brilliant "Must Read" Synthesis of Air Power Thinking
Colonel John A. Warden III was one of the most distinguished officers of his generation. A veteran fighter pilot, he was--is--as well a true defense intellectual--not the sort of individual often touted by the so-called "defense reform movement," but a true warrior-scholar in the classic image of, say, a J. F. C. Fuller--or a George Patton. Not one to shy away from controversy, Warden was convinced in the 1980's that the United States Air Force--had strayed away from its first principles. It had become a stove-piped, tribal organization, riven by discord and confusion between its "strategic" and "tactical" communities. Warden, in this brilliant work (written as a thesis at the National Defense University), posited an exciting new vision of the centrality of air power in national defense. This book served as an important departure point for the service's subsequent "Global Reach--Global Power" strategic planning framework issued in 1990. By that time, Warden was running Checkmate, a key office in Air Force planning. Through his own initiative and vision, he and a small team of "weapons officers" planned Instant Thunder, the first major response to Saddam Hussein's aggression in the Gulf. Warden briefed Instant Thunder to the Air Force Vice Chief of Staff (the Chief was away), and then on his suggestion to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, Gen. Colin Powell. Powell sent him to CENTCOM to brief Norman Schwarzkopf. His reaction was enthusiastic, and Warden was directed to brief Instant Thunder in the Gulf, to the CENTAF air component commander, General Charles Horner. Horner, brilliant in his own right, accepted much of what Warden said. But the personal chemistry between the two men was bad, and Warden returned to the States, leaving behind a small staff of acolytes and experts, most notably Lt. Col. David A. Deptula. It was the partnership of Deptula, Gen. Buster Glosson, Gen. Horner, and (back in Checkmate) John Warden that made the Desert Storm air campaign a success. After the war, Warden became commander of the Air Command and Staff College, making notable (and badly needed) changes to its curriculum. This book is a "must read" by anyone who would consider themselves a military and/or air power professional. There are Americans alive today because of John Warden's work. Warden never made general, largely because of petty jealousies by senior people above him. He was--is--a consumate professional and true patriot: never complaining, never self-advocating, always keeping true to his core beliefs. But his truest legacy is this book and the thinking it has inspired--thinking that has lead to five notable American victories over the last decade. Buy it, read it, keep it, use it!

Update of classic book on warfare
John Warden was the strategist of the air campaign in the 1991 Gulf War. In 1998, he updated his influential book. A must read for anyone interested in the military, its past, present and future.

A must for the business or military strategist!
Col. Warden adds new material to this important work on strategy, especially new material on what happened after the Gulf War. This book is many things. It is a history of airpower. It is a fresh look at the application of airpower. It is a guide for anyone in the military or business world who wants to compete or attack a system. Very readable. With Col Warden's reputation as the architect of the Air Campaign against Iraq, he has demonstrated that he can apply his ideas in real world situations. Outstanding read.

Great practical advice from America's top strategic thinker
John Warden was the architect for the most successful campaign in the 90 year history of air combat. He has brought his insights to the corporate world. A truly original thinker, Warden not only thinks outside the box but helps others do so. Highly recommended for leaders at all levels and for courses at business schools and corporate universities.

If Sun Tzu had been an entrepreneur:
If Sun Tzu had been an entrepreneur this book would have been written centuries ago.

Using a concise war-winning paradigm, Warden and Russell have successfully captured the essence of designing a business strategy that will work every time. There are three things that make this book a proverbial "must read."

- It cuts to the chase by explaining what a business strategy needs to provide to everyone in the organization and does this in way that everyone from the mail clerk to the CEO can understand.
- It proves the KISS principle doesn't have to produce a "Business for Dummies" approach.
- You can start reading the book on Monday, finish it on Tuesday, begin to institute change on Wednesday, and by Friday be making a difference.

Frankly, I think it's the best book I've read since "Thriving on Chaos" by, Tom Peters.

Great book for leaders and future leaders
John Warden is the unsung hero of the Gulf War. He was the architect of the air campaign that brought a million man Iraqi army to its knees in 38 days. He now has taken this great ideas to the corporate and non-profit worlds. Probably the best strategic thinker in the world today, you can see and hear Warden on all the networks commenting about the war against terrorism. Great book--easy to read. Highly recommended.

Important under reported documentation
John Sack has done the truth-loving community a great favor by publishing this thoroughly researched book. It deals with the manner of how the transition from German to Polish rule was effected in the areas ceded to Poland by the Allies. It is well known that Hitler had started "ethnic cleansing" of Poles from the "Warthegau" (areas annexed after the Poish campaign in 1939) and one can hardly wonder that the Poles most heartily reciprocated after Hitler's defeat. In view of the abundance of books about the Holocaust it is to Mr. Sack's credit to have shown to the world that Germans were also victims of Polish and Jewish revenge, when the opportunity arose. No past history of misdeeds was necessary, that they had been born of German parents sufficed. The fact that the author had to overcome a highly effective censorship before he was able to get the book published bodes ill for our society, which is so fond of its purported "freedom of speech." I am convinced that if Mr. Sack had not been Jewish the book would, in all probability, never have seen the light of day. If it had been self-published it would probably never have been reviewed and relegated to obscurity in spite of its intrinsic value. That Jews were in leading positions in the Polish State Security Office immediately after the war and that a number of them conducted themselves in an inhuman manner should surprise no one, unless one believes that Jews have transcended the bounds of the human race and joined the realm of the good angels. When it comes to war the worst of human instincts are released on both sides of the front. It needs to be remembered also that only the armies had stopped shooting on VE day while private wars, due to accumulated hatred by the oppressed, had continued for some time thereafter. In order to avoid another Holocaust we have to deal with the basic human phenomenon of hate, which cannot be legislated out of existence. Moralising will not do either. The roots of conflict must be exposed and intelligently dealt with by considering the grievances of both sides. This Mr. Sack has done in an admirable manner and An Eye For An Eye should be used in Holocaust education courses to show the universality of evil.

Exciting
Congratulations to John Sack. I have read this book borrowed from someone and I have to have it myself. Is there any way the publisher will publish it again? I want to leave this exciting reading to my children and I also know about scores of my Polish compatriotes as well as Germans and Czechs in Australia, who are truth hangry and who would buy this book immediately if available. As a Pole of origin I am glad, that someone from the Jewish community took up the challenge, since the tragedy of many Polish officers and soldiers from the Home Underground Army was, that they have fought Germans during the war (having among other goals to protect also Jews), yet after the war they found themselves in the same prisons run by Jews as German criminals. I suppose Mr John Sack suffered much himself first facing the truth, secondly probably he was isolated from his Jewish friends and singled out as a black sheep. Whatever happened, Mr John Sack, our warmest feelings are with you.

A horrible truth pushed off to the side disrespectfuly
John Sack is a brave man (this must be pointed out - he deserves credit) John Sack is a Jew (this is pointed out by him - why do some claim he is "anti-Semitic"? ) How can facts be "anti-Semitic"? I know this must hurt him. I say don't shoot the messenger!
Mr. Sack reveals the threats against him by those that did not want him to write this book. He fearlessly explored these terrible crimes against humanity. He reveals how the crime is ongoing because we all know this is a "no-no" subject and those that can have used there power to keep this book from being the blockbuster it should be in America. You need to read this book if you want to know the WHOLE story about the Holocaust. (not the edited version sold to the American public) Buy this book while you can - it may very well go "out of print" - Mr. Sack has told his web site readers that his books have been destroyed in the past. Jews teamed up with communists and systematicaly killing ten of thousands of Germans is something we are not to know about. The history he sheds light on is one that is being suppressed - it cannot be argued otherwise. I say you don't have to be in the dark - don't let the censors win - read it and know.

John Grisham: A Critical Companion (Critical Companions to Popular Contemporary Writers)

Feminist Criticism Goes Too Far
Mary Beth Pringle does an good job at capturing the style and format behind John Grisham's fiction. However, her feminist training and backgroud tend to impact her objectivity. Although she attempts to give an "alternative critical perspective" on each of his novels, she seems to give her analysis, from a feminist perspective, throughout the book. Her feminist views take away from the overall quality of her work. Otherwise, it is a fair analysis of Grisham.

Good Companion, Have a Copy to Read While you Read Grisham
Dr. Pringle is an interesting and informative author. Whenever I read Grisham, I have a copy of her book right next to me. If you like Grisham, Pringle's view on his books is second to none. Get this book!

Incredible Criticism!
Now I know why literary criticism is important. Pringle's book taught me lots about Grisham's works and the legal thriller genre.

"Divine"
The Italian philosopher Marsilio Ficino, who was renowned for his Latin translations of all Plato's dialogues, set out to prove that the tenets of Platonism, instead of Aristotelianism, were fundamentally compatible with Christianity. He attempted this not only by acting as the primary mover of the Florentine academy, but also through his magnanimous patron Cosimo de' Medici who apportioned Ficino the leisure to commence his monumental work, "The Platonic Theology," which is offered here for the first time in a long-awaited English translation. Marsilio Ficino's work--from what may be seen from the first of five anticipated volumes--is an artful, straightforward representation of the divine philosophy of Plato, magnificently garbed under a brilliant and definitive medieval synthesis. Of the work itself Ficino says, "the Platonic mysteries are set forth as clearly as possible...so that...we may reveal the Platonic teaching, which is in complete accord with the divine law." Like all Christian-Platonists, Ficino used Augustine as a model for his orthodox amalgamation of the teachings of Plato and Christ, and believed so strongly in it that he said, "the Platonic teaching...is related to the divine law of both Moses and Christ as the moon is to the sun." With this in mind, it may be said that the vision of Marsilio Ficino, so clearly manifested in this work, will come as a relief to anyone ardently devoted to the school of Plato and the religion of Christ. The translated works of Ficino are certainly a great benefit to those confined to the English speaking world, and the other up-and-coming volumes in new I Tatti Renaissance Library (Harvard) are likely to produce the same effects. The value of these newly translated masterpieces of western culture cannot be described.
