Wonderful guide to the world's greatest literature.
If you've ever realised that you can't read every book ever written, and wondered how to track down the best of the world's literature, this book was written for you. The book is broken up into 50 "years" of reading, with approximately one book each month. Of course, if you read more than one book a month, it will take you less than a lifetime to get through them all. Some years are devoted to reading the literature of a certain area (Year 9 focuses on Italy, for example), but as a knowledge of any language but English is not assumed, good English translations are listed. It is the only book of its kind that I've ever found that includes literature from all over the world, not just Western literature - from African poetry to Chinese history to French philosophy and still includes classic English literature (a warning - some of the books can be hard to track down but if you love searching for books as much as I do, this will actually add to your enjoyment). If you find a reading particularly enjoyable, other books by, or about, the same author are given. The best feature of this book is the references made to other books, music, art, even ballets, that may help you enjoy the readings, e.g. it recommends looking at a specific book of Japanese art while reading "The Tale of Genji" and listening to Verdi's Othello (it even includes CD catalogue numbers) while reading the tragedies of Shakespeare. This book is the product of the author's lifetime of studying literature, and is an absolute joy. I'd recommend it to any lover of literature.

EXTREMELY INTERESTING AND INFORMATIVE! - THOUGHT PROVOKING
This book discusses how many current land management principles have created an imbalance in the soil, creating more problems than we realize. The authors discuss how we can use natural resources to deal with or eliminate soil erosion, and the need for herbicides and insecticides. The book explains how our soil is a living organism, and requires a good balance of nutrients to allow for proper energy transfer between nutrients, soil, and plants. The points that are brought up are very thought provoking; things that we often overlook. One such point is that weeds and insects are not so much pests, but indicators of soil and plant life. Being a cash crop farmer, wanting to know how to restore our depleted farmland, and get away from "toxic" chemicals and fertilizers, this book has been a great teacher, and no doubt will be referenced in the future.

A good old fashioned horror story!
Although The Case Of Charles Dexter Ward is one of the few old-fashioned horror books I have read, I found it quite interesting. The plot isn't as far-fetched as so many plots of modern-day horror stories are, but it's still fiction. The horror/action doesn't unfold too early in the story, but when it does you won't stop reading. The descriptions, in the book, of different regions are so clear and imaginable you will be able to draw pictures and design maps. The ending is unique, almost predictable, that's what makes you want to hurry-up and finish the book. Another thing I like about the book is the use of language. I think it goes perfect with the setting even though I had to read some lines over in order to understand them. To write this book in modern-day language would set it apart from other horror stories in that it wouldn't be as good.

One of the best Lovecraft tales
Others have summarized the plot of this excellent story better than I can; I just wanted to mention two things: this is one of, if not the longest Lovecraft work (and the best-structured of his longer works), and it was made (adapted) into a fair-to-middling movie called The Haunted Palace in the early 60's, starring Vincent Price and, I believe, Debra Padgett. I think they had run out of Poe stories.

Lovecraft at his finest
This is one of THE Lovecraft stories to read alongside The Call of Cthulhu, At the Mountains of Madness, The Dunwich Horror, and The Shadow Over Innsmouth. No one writes horror like Lovecraft. His cold and analytical style somehow makes his works even more terrifying. It may be the shock of the rational scientific minds of his character's seeing something that goes beyond explanation that makes his stories so jolting, or the horrifying results of what happens to those rational, scientific, and inquisitive characters, like Charles Dexter Ward, who seek the truth and discover too much of it. But maybe the reason Lovecraft is so scary is because all positive human emotions such as love are abandoned leaving only fear. The Case of Charles Dexter Ward is chock full of fear and little else as it takes you through the paranoia of the American colonial days, through the degeneration of a young man's sanity, and through the ancient catacombs of an old house where something inhuman screams from the bottom of a pit. The mystery aspect of the story isn't too hard to figure out, but that may not have been so back in the 1930's when it was first written, but the journey is absolutely terrifying. Lovecraft puts pure fear on paper and that's something no modern horror writer I can think of has been able to do since.

False advertising
Although this book would be really helpful IF it included the answer to it's title "Which Ad Pulled Best," it doesn't answer that question in any of it's 50 example ads. I feel scammed! It's not made clear that one needs an answer book. The author should know my first rule of advertising...always be straight-up and honest!

So which one did?
Well this book could be helpful, it has a lot of research talk in it. The ads are black and white. It can be a bit confusing. I'd pass on it if you are a graphic designer, but if you are in market research and analysis it might work for you. I'd recommend it if you can buy it real [inexpensive]! Don't pay a lot for this book it's not worth it. But you may get some information from the "professional" comments. Over all it's a pass up. Don't buy it by the cover! It's not going to answer that question

Do not buy it without the instructor's guide
Great book with interesting interviews and side-by-side comparisons of real ads for real products. The book asks the question, but only the Instructor's Guide, SOLD SEPARATELY, gives the answers. Don't buy one without the other.
