Very helpful for anyone suffering from food intolerance.
I have suffered for months from food intolerance, including MSG-related problems. Numerous doctors could not make the connection, so I had to educate myself through reading. Dr. Walsh's book has been a Godsend. It is extremely helpful and is presented in a positive way.

His patients rave about how he has changed their lives!
I work with Dr. Walsh and when I first did a preceptorship with him I was given his book to read. After first reading the book I thought the ideas seemed extreme, but I am not an allergy sufferer nor do I suffer from any sort of migraines.I then began to visit with a few patients who have taken this book to heart and are praising Dr. Walsh for his medical expertise. Their quality of life has changed, maybe yours will too.

A book that will impact the quality of life of many people.
A book that will impact the life of many individuals. Many people today go through everyday thinking the headaches and many other symptoms are merely associated to stress. This book provides many practical causes of the day-to-day symptoms of food allergies many of us suffer from. I had never thought much about sweetners and had mearly heard rumors about MSG and the impacts it can cause some people.

Also, when one mentions diet, I think about scrimping to find something to suppliment the diet for lack of choices. Dr. Walsh provides not only causes but also solutions/alternatives to food sources that will not cause or at least diminish these symptoms.

In keeping things short I would encourage this book not only to individuals that know they have food allergies but also to those that suffer from many of the symptoms like headaches amd nausea who are probably like me and never thought the food eaten may be the source of the problem.

Wonderful book and easy to read.

Garcia lorca doe it again
Whether you have children or not Buy this book. If you have children read them the landscape poetry in here. They will sing them in their sleep. It will take them on magical journeys to happy places and you also.

this is the one to buy
I just started browsing through a book of his poems in spanish one day and loved them, but my spanish is marginal. This has the spanish poems side by side with english translations, many of which I don't really like because they do things like switch words and lines and take a little too much freedom and change the spirit of the poem, but that's okay. You can read the spanish, read the english, and see exactly what has been changed, but the beauty is in the spanish ones, and though his vocabulary is large, yours doesn't really have to be to appreciate the sound and sight of these poems in spanish. I love many of the sonnets, plus the king of harlem, which reminds me of HCE from Finnegans Wake, this character that becomes the landscape itself, "after walking", and many others from the poet in new york. I've just been getting into some spanish poets after reading some st john of the cross and seeing what types of flows and life can be infused into words in this language, and these dark, bloody grimy oozes of language have had me high for weeks.

Great, One of the best collections of Lorca's poems
Brilliant, emotions of positive and negative are tasted in this work

Revealing Interaction with Eight "Masters"
For more than 20 years, I relied on Schickel for guidance when determining which films to see; also, for gaining a better understanding of the films I had seen. In this volume, he provides interviews with eight great directors: Hitchcock, Capra, Minimill, Cukor, Hawks, Wellman, Vidor, and Walsh. In recent weeks, I have also read Robert J. Emery's two The Directors (Take One and Take Two) and Bogdanovich's Who the Devil Made It which also offer interviews and conversations with various great directors. Don't worry about duplications; that is, what Cukor, Hawks, Hitchcock, Walsh, and Wellman have to say. Bogdanovich, Emery, and Schickel have different questions to ask, different nuances of film making to explore, and approach the directors from quite different perspectives. The responses they obtain from the same directors differ. For that reason, I strongly urge fellow film buffs to purchase all of these volumes. The order in which they are read is unimportant.

What differentiates Schickel from Bogdanovich and Emery is the fact that, for many years, he wrote film reviews for Time magazine and thus had an immense audience with which to share his opinions about more than a thousand films. Also, he is the author of more than 20 books about film making which include biographies of Marlon Brando, Cary Brando, and James Cagney. Over the years, he has earned and richly deserves his reputation as one of the most thoughtful and knowledgeable of film authorities. In this volume, he interacts with eight of the greatest film directors. At no time does he seem intimidated by them nor does he ever disrupt the flow of information exchanged with self-serving observations. He guides each director into subject areas which are probably of great interest to most film buffs but he also allows each director to ramble, digress, etc. when reminiscing or when sharing specific opinions about films and actors with whom they were associated. Sure, there is some delicious gossip. And yes, some insights not otherwise available. However, for the most part, Schickel sets up various subjects and then allows each director (many of them a personal friend) to proceed wherever he may wish, at whatever pace he may prefer. His brilliant orchestration of responses ensures their scope and depth. That is to say, he did not merely turn on the recorder and then let each of the eight take it from there. On his reader's behalf, Schickel remains actively involved, indeed engaged in the exchange of information but at no time is intrusive. Within its genre, this is indeed a "classic."

Covers special challenges and observations
This film critic's survey of eight of Hollywood's finest directors and their works uses the interview process to explore the work of American filmmakers over the last decades. Hitchcock, Capra, Cuckor and others share their achievements in a revealing set of interviews covering special challenges and observations.

Book with a message about how to play nicely.
A cute little story, in a cute little shaped book with a message about teasing or playing too hard. The littlest snowman's hat is blown off by the North wind. His friends, other snowman, try to help him get it back. Then the horses from the barn and the birds from the trees try to help him but the North wind keeps it out of reach. The littlest snowman gets tired and gives up. It is then that the North wind realizes he has gone to far and he apologizes, " I wasn't trying to be mean. I just wanted to play." The littlest snowman and all his helpers play with the North wind all night long. The illustrations portray the North wind as having the upper body of a child, which makes the message hard to miss.

Review from the Publisher
This famous author has presented here another masterpiece and what is undoubtedly the finest life of St. Teresa of Avila ever written in English - a picture of one of the greatest saints of the Church and one of the most appealing women of all time. During her lifetime (1515-1582), St. Teresa captivated just about everyone she met by her wit, sanity, courage, intelligence, simplicity, humility, charm and power; today she continues to delight people by her wonderful combination of holy madness and huge common sense. William Thomas Walsh recounts Teresa's years of resisting complete self-surrender to God before finally entering with undivided will on the way of perfection; of her terrible anguish over the Lutheran heretics falling into Hell and of the grievous penances and sacrifices she undertook for their conversion, and of her many adventures in opening up houses of cloistered contemplative nuns. A masterful biography of a remarkable woman who was a mystic and foundress, the reformer of Carmel, a doctor of the science of divine love, and now, recently proclaimed "Doctor of the Church!" Fabulous! 592pp PB. Imprimatur

Characters of the Inquisition

Good historical balance, confusing, errant theology
I really don't have a lot to add to what other reviewer's have written. The author gives a very reasonable account of the history of inquisitional methods since Old Testament times, and how the logic of the medieval Inquisition is derived from them.

Special attention is given to the cultural context and concerns facing the Church at the time, how abuses were curbed, and what certain figures did to make sure that the Inquisition did not become a means for clerical abuse and self-interest.

One of the best features of this book was the pointing out of errors by past Inquisition historians. Walsh reveals inherant bias in some writers, and outright ignorance of evidence in some cases. The chapter on Llorente was particularly helpful.

The problem I had with this book was that the author seemed to be a heretic himself, by Catholic standards. He went so far as denouncing salvation sola gratia. On page 222 we read, "Was not Luther's doctrine of salvation by grace alone a restatement, with a somewhat different emphasis, of the old despairing dogma of the Alumbrados, the Manichees, the Gnostics, the Buddhists?"

I don't know where he was trying to go here - perhaps he meant to say "faith alone", but salvation sola gratia has always been the infallible dogmatic teaching of the Church (See Council of Trent Canon 1).

For things such as this, I hesitate to give this to Protestants. Though it might help clarify the issues surrounding the Inquisition, it might unnecessarily "confirm" their worst fears regarding the Catholic doctrine of justificiation. I simply penned some notes into the margin of this page pointing this out.

Overall a good book, but it has its flaws.

The book that dispels all rumors
When the topic of the Inquisitions are brought up, many people cringe and blame the Catholic Church for many horrible deeds done during this period. Thomas Walsh has done a tremendous amount of research to dispel all those false rumors and vindicate the names of many of the people involved with the Inqusitions. He has chosen 6 particular Inquisitors in this book and goes through their life and the truth behind their characters.

What one will find is not some ruthless killer, but men who truly loved God and the Catholic Church. If you have friends who continue the bash the Church because of the myths of the Inquistion, this is the book to give them. After reading this book, you will understand the reason behind the Inquisition and how the Inquistion saved Europe from many of the ruthless and violent sects which had taken root in Europe.

This book is filled with historical facts concerning many of the events and people of the Inquisition. The Faith was restored and this allowed the Church to prosper amongst the many heresies which had seduced so many people. If you really want to understand the historical facts behind the Inquisition, Thomas Walsh and his book are the place to start.

Review from the Publisher
This famous historian has laid to rest the standard myths accepted by most people today. For example, the lie that the Inquisition was ruthless and unjust, that it sent thousands to merciless torture and undeserved death, and that it was administered by unbalanced and sinister minds. To settle this matter and to set forth the facts about the Inquisition, the author has drawn for us a detailed historical sketch of six prominent Inquisitors - "Characters of the Inquisition," as he calls them - and in the process has explained for the modern reader the background of the Inquisition, how it operated and the major historical lines of its progress. Within these pages the reader will see history unfold before his eyes in a manner refreshingly truthful and well substantiated, and in the process, he will witness the Catholic Church being vindicated of the mendacious claims laid against her by her enemies. Important knowledge to defend the Church.

Fraudulent History
This book claims to reveal prophesies that predicted the rise of communism, World War II, and other major events. It also claims that freemasons blamed pious Catholics for the murder of Jacinta and Francisco the following year in order to fulfill the prophesy of 1917 (in fact they died from natural causes). The author fails to mention that Lucy's "prophesies" were not written down until the 1940's, AFTER all these events had occurred. The New York Times article describing "the Miracle of the Sun" on the day following the event DOES NOT EXIST. If you don't believe me, go to your local library and look it up yourself. This is like the fraudulent Nostradamus e-mails that predicted the World Trade Center disaster, but that only appeared AFTER the event. In fact, "the Miracle of the Sun" never took place and the supposed 70,000 witnesses did not exist!

The Catholic Encyclopedia of 1909 (available online) has scholarly researched articles that prove that both the Rosary and the Shroud of Turin are frauds, but the Catholic Church continues to pawn these on the public. It acts like a parent who tells her child that the tooth fairy stole her tooth in the middle of the night. I know many people will be angry with this review, but I challenge them to research the original sources before giving a blanket condemnation.

Best book on the subject
This is one the very best books on the subject. The author is truly gifted in telling the story of Fatima. ...[The] apparitions at Fatima have been the most thoroughly investigated in history, and anyone who knows the rigourous standards that the Catholic Church places on such investigations knows it does not advance such venerations as it enthusiastically does such as for the Apparitions of Fatima without it's full belief that these events are valid. In fact, many newspaper reporters were present on the day of the Miracle of Sun, some very unfriendly to the subject of "supposed apparitions" occurring in a remote village in Portugal, which at that time was controlled by socialistic forces. These newpapers (which are documented in the book) came to witness what they thought would be a non-event, and were in the end forced to corroborate the veracity of some very unusual happenings having taken place there--astonishing ones. So to say that they didn't take place because a reviewer below said that the New York Times didn't report it, is just stupid. There were very many witnesses and a great deal of testimony taken from Fatima that this book thoroughly details.... Start with this book. In it you'll find a rich vein of history, spirituality, and truth.

Best book on Fatima I've read
I've read many books on Fatima, and this is the best--hands down. William Thomas Walsh's writing is truly magnificent. Fatima literally comes alive in these pages, with rich descriptions, and a truly exciting prose style.

I must disagree with a previous reviewer that said that the book's age is beginning to show. The apparitions of Fatima occurred in 1917. The fact that the book was written closer to the time-frame of the occurrences there is an asset, not a detriment. And yet the book and it's well regarded message could not be more current. This one is not to be missed.
