Good book for classroom lesson
This is a kid-friendly book for introducing the life and contributions of Betsy Ross. It is written as an easy-to-understand story, and the illustrations and interesting facts really grab children's attention. I would highly recommend this book for any grade level.

Betsy Ross
This book is very informational. I did not know of her background, only that she was responsible for making our country's flag. I think that children would be surprised, just as I was, to learn of her history.

A great teacher resource.
This book is an excellent source for teachers to use with any grade level! The author entices the reader with interesting information about Betsy Ross. While telling the story of the wonderful woman who sewed the first American flag, the author keeps the attention of readers with great illustrations. This book can also be used to teach the history of the American flag.

Accessible Story Weaving Christmas and History
This is an interesting Christmas book for young children. The story is played against the backdrop of the Roosevelt White House (Teddy's), and an apparently true story involving the conservationist president's decision not to allow a cut tree into the White House because he want's to be a good example for Americans.

Of course TR's notoriously rebellious brood tries to outfox their dad by secretly procuring a pine tree and stashing it away, decorated, in a bedroom closet. When discovered, TR marches the boys down to speak with Gifford Pinchot, his head of the US Forestry service. Pinchot says that sometimes cutting small trees can actually be beneficial to forests as it gives room for other trees to thrive and grow.

With that OK, the live tree (although a small one in keeping with the chief of forestry's direction) is again welcome into the White House and is part of a festive christmas celebration.

This story interests my children. Besides the Christmas hook, it involes the president and the White House, concepts they are familiar with. It also teaches a conservation lesson. Good book for the 4-7 set.

Good job of "personalizing" a White House Christmas
This book was excellent for 4-8 year olds to personalize Christmas at their house and at the first family's house. It also introduced a real life president and how carrying out his duties affected his home life. My son saw this as his first 'history lesson' of sorts. As an extra bonus it just so happens that one of President Roosevelt's sons was named Quentin. My son will remember this fact because that's his name and my husband, his dad's name happens to be Theodore!

There are so many pluses to this outstanding picturebook! I believe it is Wallner's best (and I like all of her books)! French language, American history, dogs, flight, etc....there is so much. A great piece of obscure American history! Every year this is one of my second graders' favorites!

Great Introductory Biography series
This book is perfect for K-3 students who just can't wade through those lenghty chapter books. It is abundantly illustrated with adorable pictures to keep little eyes busy while you are reading to them. Florence Nightingale was a young lady who graciously served as a nurse to wounded soldiers and instituted many improvements in the field of nursing. Other titles in the series include, Edison, Jefferson, Lincoln, Washington, Franklin, and more.

Great beginner biography
The entire "A picture book of..." biography series byDavid Adler is outstanding. Perfect for lower elementary studentsdoing their first real report. Makes a great read-aloud for non-readers as they are easily completed in one sitting. The cute cartoon-like pictures are kid friendly. A nice juvenile biography of Colonial orator Patrick Henry
"A Picture Book of Patrick Henry" introduces young readers to the most famous orator of the American Revolution. Author David A. Adler tells the story of both Henry's life and his political career, which saw him elected as the first governor of Virginia. This juvenile biography also deals in a straight-forward manner with some of the unhappy events in Henry's life, such as the mental illness of his first wife and his arguments against adopting the Constitution. Consequently, readers will get a pretty good understanding of why Henry was an important figure in the American Revolution. Artists John and Alexandra Wallner provide attractive line-and-watercolor illustrations. The book includes an interesting Author's Note, in which Adler takes issue with biographer William Wirt's description of Henry and deals with Henry's ownership of slaves (Wirt was actually the one who "wrote" Henry's famous speech as part of his biography). Adler's Picture Book Biographies looks at over two dozen famous people including Simon Bolivar, Abraham Lincoln, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Sitting Bull. This series looks like it is worth checking out.

The real Revere
This picture book is an excellent resource for children of any grade level. The book gives an excellent portrayal of Paul Revere through the years. It really focuses on him as a person and the contributions he made to his family and to his country. The pictures are an excellent resource for ELD students as well as all students. I found this book to be very accurate, yet simplistic.
