Terrific read-aloud
This is a wonderful book! Children and adults alike enjoy the silliness and the repetition. Similar to The Mitten, but lots more fun!

Great book!
We borrowed this book from the library for my 3 1/2 year old daughter. My daughter has now memorized most of the book, and she loves to "read" it to the rest of the family. She laughes the whole way through it, and she actually looks forward to bedtime when the whole family sits down and reads it together. We will definately be adding it to our home library.

SO FUNNY!! WE ALL LAUGHED. FUN TO READ!!
WE BORROWED THIS BOOK FROM THE LIBRARY. THE FIRST OF WABERS BOOKS. I READ IT TO MY 8, 5, AND 4 YEAR OLD. WE ALL LAUGHED AND LAUGHED. FUN TO READ!! I IMMEDIATLY ORDERED TWO, ONE FOR US AND ONE FOR MY NEICES! IT WAS REFRESHING TO READ A CHILDS BOOK THAT EVERYONE ENJOYS. SO MANY BOOKS AND SO FEW GREAT ONES. IT WILL BECOME A FAVORITE IN OUR PERSONAL LIBRARY.

A charming children's classic
I first read Bernard Waber's The House on East 88th Street as a child and was capitivated by Lyle the Crocodile. How I loved this story about a bright green crocodile living in a bathtub in a New York City brownstone.Though frightened at first, the Primm family is won over by their housemate. Lyle is amazing, he takes out the trash, brings in the milk, (this book was first published in 1962!)helps around the house, and loves a nice, hot bath complete with Turkish caviar! (We could all use a Lyle) The story of Lyle does not end here; Waber went on to write seven more titles about this lovable creature. Out of all the Lyle books, this is his best-known. This charming children's classic is suitable for small children between the ages of four and eight.

A great series
When I got pregnant with my son, my mother sent a box of old books she had saved from my childhood. The House in East 88th Street and Lyle and the Birthday Party were in the box. These two books have become favorites of my son as well as my husband and I. I'm glad to see that they are still in print, as I plan to purchase a few more from the series.

The magical world of Lyle
The story of Lyle the crocodile who is discovered in the bathtub when Joshua and his family move into their new home. My mother first read this book to me when I was four years old. I am now 35! It is a truly wonderful childrens book. One of those that lingers in your memory as a world you inhabited as a child. Myself and my sisters adored the Lyle books and we are now buying them for our families. Endearing, amusing, full of the joys and sadnesses of life. Lyle is a childs world through a crocodiles eyes. Try them all. You and your children (of all ages) will love them!.

wow...
just the memories of this book bring tears to my eyes...it was one of my favorites when i was young. it's a great story. loved it.

As a teacher I give this an A+.
This book is wonderful. As a second grade teacher, I read it so often to my class that the paper back book pages have fallen out. I'm purchasing the hard back version now.

This is a sweet book!
I love this book! I begged my mom to read it to me over and over again when I was little. Now I am going to be a teacher and I plan on having this book in my classroom at all times! It would be an excellent book to read to a child going on his/her first sleep over. But, actually, I think anyone (child or adult) would enjoy this book.

What a great concept.....
My friend and I read this book while waiting for our food two summers ago, at a Friendly's in Providence Rhode Island. The book gripped us, and to this day we still talk about the story that changed our lives. If we hadn't taken that vacation, and hadn't chosen to eat at Friendly's, today we would be different people. I Love this book and will devote the up comming summer to finding a copy of it. Perhapes I will retrace my steps to Providence and reread the book that now is just a memory. I don't know if the book is still there or if that Friendly's is even still open, but my summer memories will live on as long as I remember the plot of this revolutionary book. Steve, you know it.

Just Like Abraham Lincoln
Mr. Potts not only looks like Abraham Lincoln but is a confirmed Lincolnphile who shares many other attributes of Mr. Lincoln's with his young neighbor who in turn shares Mr. Potts with his schoolmates for a special program on Lincoln's birthday. A clever story that presents pertinent facts about a beloved president to young children. As an school librarian I enjoy reading this to kindergarten students for Presidents Day.

A celebration of diversity, written for children
A hippopotamus is wallowing very happily in her favorite mudhole until a snooty rhinoceros ambles along and tells her she looks ridiculous because she doesn't have a horn on her nose. So begins Bernard Waber's hilarious tale of an insecure hippo, who suffers from a severe inferiority complex until she realizes she's just fine the way she is, "a big, fat, wonderful hippopotamus". Waber is a great children's author and this book provides a message that any preschooler can relate to and understand, that everyone is special and unique in his or her own way. The ink and spatter-paint illustrations, in black, red and green, are fun to look at and help carry the story along. Kids from 3 to 6, and their parents too, will love this book.

A great message for my kindergarten class.
This book is very easy for small children to understand. My kindergarten students loved it so well, they decided to act it out. It turned out great!

Fun, poignant, and brilliantly illustrated
I loved this book when I was a 5 year old some 30 years ago, and now my son loves it also. It's fun and clever, and the illustrations hark back to a different era when 6-color printing wasn't necessary to hold a child's attention--this one uses just two colors--and yet the illustrations are wonderful.

Of course, I may be a bit biased because my name is Arthur!

Smiles
This is a hilarious book. The laughs and giggles will start unexpectedly, but very early on. Soon you will be guffawing or chortling at every page. And the humor is syncopated. That is, the funniness has unexpected and unusual timing.

This is also a visually beautiful book. The sheer beauty and the subtle artistic invention that load every drawing would be enough to make this book worth having even without the funny goings on.

This is an especially good book for these times--when a laugh will do everyone some good.

Beautiful and Cool
This is probably my favorite childrens' book of all time. The illustrations are so mint, you'll hardly be able to believe it. The best part is when Torchy flies to the city and gets blown away by the crazy mix of lights. I promise you'll love this book.

School*Project!
I enjoyed reading the book Rich Cat, Poor Cat! It was about these two cats one is a street cat and is poor, scubby, dirty, no one pays attention to him, and he has to find his own way to live, his own shelter, food, and the other cat is a indoor cat that lives with a very rich family that cleans, feeds, give shelter, and takes care of him! Yes, I think this book is great for kids because it makes you think about all the cats out there that don't have homes! I think children would like to read this book because it teaches you things about cats and you should take care of every pet you own!

Rich Cat Poor Cat ROCKS!!!
Thank you, Bernard Waber, for inspiring me to make a great band. I know this thing says I'm 12, but I'm really 16 and all, but this book was awesome, my friend Andrew read it to me five times a day for three weeks...it's given me the courage to keep going, no matter how tough it gets, because I know someone out there has it worse than me...

Rich Cat Poor Cat
This is the best book I have ever read in my entire life! It touched my heart in so many ways. I realized that there is so much good in the world. I am so happy that Gwen found a good home. I have read this book 184 times and every time gets better! Thank you so much!
