Prevention and responsibility is the theme in this book.
This book deals with nine steps that parents can help their young adolescent with concerning alcohol. The first three steps deal with preparing for action. The next four steps deal with taking action. The last two steps deal with prevention.I like the emphasis on prevention and responsibility. The book was a difficult book to read but the end result was true. Family values are what this book is all about. The family as a unit must make decisions together regarding this serious issue. Finally the emphasis on prevention and responsibility will require working more effectively with preteens as well as teenagers, and making some important societal changes in our assumptions and beliefs about the use of alcoholic beverages.
Highly recommended for all parents, teachers and counselors!
"Vogler and Bartz (A Better Way to Drink: Simon & Schuster) offer this helpful book that deals realistically with the problem of teenagers and alcohol. Fact is, most teens do not just "say no." Ninety-two percent of all teens will try alcohol before they finish high-school and two-thirds of them will become regular drinkers while still in school. The authors stress the critical role of parents in affecting their children's decisions about drinking. They are specific in describing blood-alcohol levels, encouraging activities that open parent/child communication and taking appropriate action when alcohol abuse occurs. The tone is sensible, specific and sympathetic. This book should be required reading for parents, teachers and youth workers, whether the goal is abstinence or toleration. Highly recommended!"
