Right on Target
With so much to absorb in so few hours during the day, this beautiful book allows us to glean the jewels from ACIM and immediately receive the full benefits of its purpose--a gift of peace and healing with generous reassurances of love. It is thoughtfully compiled and offers delightful food for thought for so many of us that are short on time, but still long for spiritual sustenance. I plan to include it on my holiday gift list for friends and family. Peace

A great distillation of the Course's main message
I found the Course to be too dense. This, however, is just right. It has all the essential truth in a much easier to digest form.

Thank You Marianne and company,

Daniel

Wonderful.
I'm not a serious student of ACIM, but have a passing familiarity from the books and tapes of Marianne Williamson and others. This volume, which I found purely by accident (are there accidents?), is a beautiful collection of quotes from the course. Reading it serially, or picking it up and opening to any page leaves one with a true sense of peace. I would absolutely recommend it for those who find the full text of the Course too much to take on.

A rare peek
This book is a wonder. And I mean just that. It's about people who have second or third or fourth homes on an island that has been purposefully developed to house them in privacy and various definitions of splendour. Not exactly appealing to all, right? But this book IS appealing, it's the embodiment of the capitalist dream: get the money and THEN what do you do with it? Build or buy a house on Mustique. BEST is the text, a well-written account of how this all happened. And the PHOTOGRAPHS are lovely, chosen to evoke the mood. Yes, the book is expensive (no where nearly as the real estate!), but it's worth every penny. May not be my dream, but it a serious chronicle of some important other dreams in the late 20th/early 21st century.

Of its time
This is an excellently written book about one of the world's most expensive "developments," a scrub island turned into a multi-millionaires' paradise. Mr. Vaughan has done a masterful job of capturing the whimsy and the vision (albeit sometimes slightly cock-eyed) of the man who dreamed this all up, as well as bits of the lives of those who are now availing themselves of the private, secure, and demonstrably exquisitely beautiful end result. The photographs are lovely, this is an altogether great book to have lying around on any cofee table; it's sure to spark conversation ("is that really Mick Jagger?" et cetera).

Well writtem with excellent Photos
I think this book captures the true essence of the island of Mustique. It shown all the wonderful beaches and the beautiful water. I believe that the photos of the people that live on the island and the photos of their town make Mustique a place I would want to visit for years to come.

Full of Wonders!
This book has easily accessible information, really interesting stories, fabulous archival photographs, good insights into women golfers, and just the nicest TONE. Would be good for experienced golfers, for those just starting, and for those who might enjoy reading about the history of the sport from the distaff side. A good book to read when you're waiting for someone else to finish a round, or to inspire you to get out there and swing that club!

Read this book!
Wonder how medicine comes up with cures for anything, ever? Here are some of the answers! The author makes me wish I could invite Dr. Koprowski for dinner, he is so comfortably described. Not that Dr. Koprowski seems like an altogether comfortable man, you'd have to stay on your toes with him, but what a mind! This is a must-read antidote for Hooper's unsubstantiated theory concerning the origins of AIDS. If you've read The River, you BETTER read this. And it's a whole lot more interesting!

Quotes from the Course
This book is a compilation of quotes from A COURSE IN MIRACLES. The "Course" is a three volume set of books that comprise a curriculum of self-study psychotherapy.

Interspersed with the beautiful quotes from the Course are equally beautiful black-and-white photographs of inspiring nature scenes. This book also includes a forward by Marianne Williamson, author of A RETURN TO LOVE.

The reason I give this book only four stars is because I have a personal "qualm" about taking quotes from the Course out of context. My opinion is that the Course is a completely integrated thought system, and it is a thought system that often says things that we do not want to hear (for example, the teaching that God did not make the world, but that the world was made by the ego "as an attack on God" [Workbook, p. 403]). What often results from taking passages from the Course out of context is that the true meaning is lost and the Course can be turned into a "dual" thought system, whereas it is truly a non-dual thought system.

WATCH IT!
Better watch out right here. I have read a whole bunch of books in my life, and this one can Change Your Life! Read it, mark the particular lines that speak to you, type those out and MEMORIZE them. Then repeat your list aloud every day until they become part of who you are. Then, my friend, you will be well on the way to becoming who your were designed to be. Overstated? Exaggerated? You just try it and see...

good, but not great
When i bought this book I was expecting to learn all of Mr. Gwynn's inside secrets and tips. I got some of that but not a lot. He talked a lot about his life and career. He also talked about how to get out of slumps and his knowledge of the game. But the secrets of hitting and the basic skills and what exactly I should be doing at the plate for each pitch in as many situatuions as possible were no where to be found. I liked the book but I think Mr. Gwynn needs to write another book, more on the lines of "How to Hit a Baseball"

Concise, Intriguing, Captivating Advice on ... Hitting!
My son wanted this book, but I ended up borrowing his bat, gripping it, trying to apply Tony Gwynn's advice. And I haven't played serious ball since high school! That's the thing about this book, it explains hitting with such fresh insight that you just can't help but want to go out there and take some cuts ... no matter what your age.

This book is a must for any coach of youth baseball. Hell, it's probably a must for a number of major leaguers as well! Gwynn offers some mind-boggling advice, such as not thinking of hitting the ball, but hitting *through* it. Along with this easy to understand science, you get some of the most terrific baseball photos published anywhere -- clear images which capture both the power and beauty of hitters doing their thing.

There's a nice introduction by the last of the .400 hitters, Ted Williams, who thinks that Tony is the guy who can do it in the modern era. The summary is entiled "Old School," and presents the p! ! hilosophy of Gwynn as a player committed to his team and his community. He is, simply, a testimony to all that's great about this great game. So whether you want to become a better hitter, or are just fascinated by this difficult athletic feat, or just interested in a player who is certain to become a hall of famer -- read this lively and enlightening book. Just make sure you have a bat handy.

Other reviewers missing the point
This IS Tony's Gwynn's How to hit a baseball book, contrary to what other, method-seeking readers might think. I was very pleased with what others called the extraneous material, it all gives me a better idea of who Tony Gwynn is when he steps up to the plate, and THAT is an imposrtant part of how he hits a baseball. People who believe you can read a "how to" book and then go out and hit like Gwynn probably believed Kenny Rogers' old "you can learn to play a guitar" pitch on television. This is a great book for kids and for fans and for anyone interested in what it takes and what it's like to be a sports icon in the 21st century.

One of the best "New Consciousness" books
An outstanding book on the subject of transpersonal psychology. This is a collection of essays from the leaders in the field. I Especially enjoyed the articles by Ken Wilber (of course) and Roger Walsh

Great book on transpersonal Psychology
This book is a wonderful series of essays for those of us interested in transpersonal experiences. It was very inspiring and helped me experientially get closer to transcendence. The richness in content comes from many people discussing the transpersonal experience from many different perspectives. I'd highly recommend this book. Another book on transpersonal psychology I'd recommend is "Rhythm, Relationships, and Transcendence" by Toru Sato. It is the best book that explains what transcendence really means! Both books are excellent!

An Excellent Introduction to a Hopeful Vision of Humanity
I love this book and am glad to see it has passed the test of twenty years of use. I found its first incarnation as "Beyond Ego," a wonderful distillation of transpersonal psychology and consciousness research, and am happy to recommend what is now a completely rewritten, updated, and even better version to clients and friends today. I appreciate writing that makes learning easy, and the current "Paths Beyond Ego" succinctly introduces its readers to the key ideas of more than thirty five of the most influential thinkers in the field, thus saving the effort of wading through the hundreds of original texts.

Although easy to read, this is a rigorous work that integrates scientific and psychological thinking with the spiritual traditions to create a comprehensive transpersonal vision of the highest possibilities of what human beings can be. The media is full of the wonders of physical technology, while this book offers a much needed counterbalance by examining the less commonly known wonders of psychospiritual technology. One of the most interesting questions this book explores is how something non physical like spirituality can be studied with scientific rigor rather than being left adrift in the realms of arbitrary belief, superstition, and dogma.

"Paths Beyond Ego" examines some of the major ideas, practices, goals, and experiences, that underlie the spiritual traditions and the new discipline of transpersonal psychology. It does this in a non-denominational way that avoids getting lost in the beliefs and details of any particular path or religion. The editors paint a broad interdisciplinary overview of what leading researchers of consciousness are exploring today, including; personal growth, transpersonal psychotherapy, spiritual emergency, addiction, meditation, enlightenment, gurus, lucid dreaming, psychedelics, science and spirituality, ethics, philosophy, mysticism, love, near death experiences, service, and ecology.

I have used this book as an introductory text for university undergraduates, who rated it highly, as well as an introduction to transpersonal thinking for "growth oriented" therapy clients. I have also recommended it to corporate managers and trainers who wanted a quick overview of how "normal every day consciousness" can be developed by practice into much more effective "higher states of consciousness" through self awareness, self transcendence, and ultimately, enlightenment.

For those who find the gems in this collection of fifty essays engaging and want to go deeper, you will have both the "big picture" and a reading list with which to select among authors and longer works that will take you there. In this field, theory is only proven by personal application of the understanding it offers, so if you are inspired by the possibilities of inner exploration, and ready to move beyond theory into actual exercises and practices, Dr. Walsh's newest book, "Essential Spirituality," is an excellently written, user friendly, and highly recommended place to start. (Recommended by Wilber, Grof, Tart, Ram Dass, Jampolsky, Arrien, and other leaders in the field, with a forward by the Dalai Lama.)

A clear passion for sailing, while story is foggy.
I was unfortunately disappointed with Mr. Vaughan's describing his participation in the Fastnet race. His own passion and appreciation for sailing is clear, but this particular story line is jumbeled, at best. I would venture to guess that less than thirty percent of the book is actually about the race. Instead of building each of the primary characters, then launching into the race, he injects a life history for each character at points in the description of the race where the character experiences some significant event. Instead of being a great story of an increadible race, it's more of a collection of passages of admiration for individuals, that runs in fits a spurts. What was particularly disturbing was the recurring glorification of the life of a slave to the sea including binge drinking, indiscriminate love affairs and reckless endangerment. I did appreciate Vaughan's ability to beautifully convey a basic passion for sailing that is often difficult to describe.

GOOD SAILING STORY!
Loved this book, find other review saying it's not about the particular race missing the point, it IS about sailing, about LOVING sailing, and yep, there is danger, but there is such an appreciation for LIFE in this little book that to carp about any politically-incorrectness is definitely mising the point! Good characterization, good story, GOOD BOOK! Find it and read it!

A race + a storm = a slice of a life
I liked this book a lot. Written about one particular sailboat race, and one particular storm, it falls into the category of "catastrophe" books, I guess, but it is, as another reviewer wrote, about much MORE than this one race. Wish there were follow-up books by Mr. Vaughan. Yes, great sailing descriptions, the best I've ever read. This book is a very good thing in a small package.

snob
The book about Ted Turner is a very interesting book about how it feels to be rich, famous, and have your dreams come true. If your main goal in life is to become wealthy, then this book is for you! This book will also make you realize that having money and fame isn't everything. In encountering this "man behind the mouth" you get to hear all the criticism and bad things that are said about you and against you without even knowing it because of what you have. I gave this book three stars because of its lack of main points, on the other hand it did have many details and let you know the troubles that come along with the riches. I suggest if you read this book, that you don't follow in Turner's actions.
