Uncovers unrecognized achievements of women
Many inventions and achievements attributed to men actually were first made by a woman! Some of the inventions and achievements profiled in this book I was aware of, but many were surprises. Men and women both would benefit from reading this book: Women-to see what women have achieved and as models for what is possible and men- for a wake-up as to the achievements and capabilities of women. Fortunately women are more likely to be recognized now for their achievements, but we still have a long way to go. When I authored a book on small businesses, I encountered many instances where women did not receive credit for their contributions which were often greater than the men in their business. This book is educational and inspirational. Give this book to a woman you want to inspire!

Interesting and little known contributions by women
The book can be read as an entity or read randomly as time allows because each inventor has a brief self-contained section in the larger chapters. The book is well-written and it is not an academic punishment to read. There is enough detail to set the reader into further research but it is light enough to provide information in an enjoyable way. The inventors often have insightful quotes. It should be required reading in schools to encourage more participation in science, math, computers and intellectual curiosity in general.

Not just about science, the book also mentions patenting the brassiere, computer technologies and some weird ideas (skeletons shocking criminals into confessions, anyone?). A nice mix of fun and facts.

Patently Female
This book gives you a fascinating look at the contributions that female inventors have presented to the world, from diapers to medical treatments to cutting edge technology. Too often these female inventors are overlooked or don't get rightful credit for their awe-inspiring accomplishments. This book brings alive the ingenuity and resourcefulness of female inventors, who should not be forgotten.

Adventurous Spirit: A Story About Ellen Swallow Richards (A Carolrhoda Creative Minds Book)
Published in Library Binding by Carolrhoda Books (1992)

It is good to have another book out on this energetic woman.
To be truthful I haven't read Adventurous Spirit. However, I have studied the life and work of Ellen Henrietta (Swallow) Richards for many years. She was an amazing character and in many ways worthy of continued attention. Richards ventured into chemistry, then unexplored territory for women, and found there opportunity for looking at many domestic processes in new ways in addition to the work valued within chemistry itself. More important she created an opening for other women to enter tertiary education. Even without reading it I can appreciated the existence of another telling of Ellen's story.

Great Book
I got this book when it first came out and was so happy to learn more about Stevie. This was quite a while ago, so much of this information you may already know about. But I still strongly recommend trying to order it. It's worth it for all you Stevie lovers out there!

Another Garland Book With a Slightly Different Angle
Rainbow: A Star-Studded Tribute to Judy Garland is a collection mostly consisting of magazine articles from the 1930s, '40s, '50s, '60s, and afterwards. There are a few other things, like MGM production notes for The Wizard of Oz, but it's almost all magazine excerpts, and it's interesting finding out just what the public's perception of her was, both before and after her death. Just don't go in looking for a deep character study.

it was an ok book
i liked the way other people had comments in there.but one thing is did they have to put the part were they think she is gay.and when they had the other people writting a story about her you sorta heard the same thing over.if anyone wants to talk just go ahead and e mail me

Raised on Judy! How did Rick McKay KNOW?!
This book is worth the price just for the chapter, "Raised on Judy, or What Chance Did a Boy Have." I have never seen Judy written about (and I have read a LOT) which such humor and compassion - especially what it was like growing up as a kid in the mid west during her years as a fading icon. Rick McKay's chapter is mah-velous. The rest of the book is quite good and a real Garlandophile's treat, but the McKay chapter could have been my life - or many of my friends' lives as well. It is a crime that this book is out of print. I would give it for Xmas every year!

A thorough biograpghy of the best singer in the world.
This book contains a lot of information the singer Ozzy Osbourne, AKA John Michael Osbourne. The author has studied the life and times of this great singer. It covers his childhood, his years with Black Sabbath, and the short life of Randy Rhoads, one of the most respected and talented guitarists of this century. It even has an interview with one of the few onlookers at the famous dove-biting incident. Overall a very through book that leads up throught the singer's Ultamate Sin years. It should have been updated a long time ago
