This book is the 2nd in a larger series called "The Frontier People of America". These people did the rough work of creating a civilization, and for their reward were cheated by eastern land companies and now renounced by the modern culture of our nation. It's the Indians who are now the "good guys" as if such an easy distinction could be made. Van Every is an excellent author and lays out the facts about atrocities and achievements of both sides of the frontier struggle. The hardships the pioneers face should give us pause when we complain about our alleged "problems".

Although a novel, the historical events in this text have been carefully researched. It will put into perspcetive the events that were taking place during some of the last days in the flight of the Native American people. Thoughtful and insightful details about the religious beliefs of the Sioux Nation. Events lead to the betrayal and slaughter of these native people as "civilization" progresses.

These are the days before the revolution when the American frontier was formed by the Alleghenies and the dregs of civiliization were pushing relentlessly into the wilderness. The French were expelled, leaving their allies, the Indians, adrift to find their own solutions to the westward press. Names like Pontiac, Croghan and Johnson formed the forces on the frontier and war exploded the myths. These are important events in the evolution of America and Dale Van Every brings them alive and in the context of the forces at work in London, Williamsburg and New York. This is not pretty history, but it is startlingly real.

I read "Forth to the Wilderness" many years ago, and have not forgotten it. I was not particularly interested in early American History but found the author was able to make the subject matter very interesting with his style of writing. Because of reading this book, I did become much more interested in early American History. I highly recommend the book.

Excellent Kentucky 1780's thriller and love triangle story. Self-reliant frontiersman, Va. widow and heiress and former Indian captive all well drawn and distinctive. Wilderness setting carefully acknowledged and evoked. Nice incidental detail of British and Indian attacks on Boonesboro and Harrodsburg, etc., including the use of cannon.
