A little bit boring
This book is more like an novel than a biography, and it is too long! However, you will find a very brave Jill Kinmont. Her spirit has never end. She kept on fighting and never gave up.

Remarkable story of hope
This memorable book is the definitve profile of courage. It tells the story of Jill Kinmont, a talented downhill skier whose Olympic success was imminent until a terrible fall in Utah rendered her a quadriplegic. But the true success of this book lies not with the representation of Jill Kinmont as a tragic heroine, but with the portrayal of her as someone whose commitment, dedication, drive, and determination have enabled her to succeed at life, despite the tremendous obstacles she has faced. Her skiing ability is legendary, but it is as a person she stands tall. Her story proves beyond all doubt than when our bodies are at their weakest our spirits are at their strongest.

This is an amazing and memorable piece of work and will be cherished by those who believe in the immortality and infallibility of the human spirit.

I Loved It! 1
This was one of the best books I ever read. It was inspirational, funny, and one of those books you can't put down. It showed me that there is nothing that can stand in your way if you are determined. I have seen both of the movies and read and reread this book a million times. I urge you to read this book!

Basic ideas, clear and accesible
Both theoretical and practical, this book discusses the motivations behind peoples' manipulative behavior, both conscious and unconscious. It offers some advice for controlling or changing this behavior in others and in ourselves. Basically, people develop manipulative behaviors because these behaviors offer some kind of psychological reward. The way to undo these manipulations is to refuse to respond in such a way as to deny the reward that is expected. The book offers ways to do this, such as listening objectively, delivering a surprising response, holding back approval, etc. Also discusses such issues as blaming, discordance, marriage and divorce, children, alcoholism, etc. There are no ground-breaking ideas here, but the book accomplishes its aims in a very clear and accessible fashion, without psychological jargon. Some of the examples are outdated, as when it refers to the "establishment," "the sexual revolution," and the war in Vietnam. There is no bibliography.

a complete understanding of why we react to others behavior,
This book offers an in depth understanding of our inner reaction to other people's manipulative behavior. It gives insight to why we react the way we do and how to understand the agenda of the most skilled manipulator. How and why we interact in our world the way we do, what we are saying about ourlselves when we smoke, drink , and abuse substances. I orginally purchased this book in its first publication from Time Warner. So many of my friends have borrowed the book that I've needed to replace it. My search has been in vain for all these years until i found it on Amazon. It's well worth the investment. You will refer back to it for years to come

Horrendous.
E. G. Valens, Cybernaut: A Space Poem (Viking, 1968)

What truly amazes me is that Viking published this, and with a blurb from Louis Untermeyer on the back. Good lord. No wonder the major presses shy away from poetry these days.

Valens' goal was to take the space program and make something out of it that the average human mind could identify with; to encapsulate the vast distances and utter loneliness of outer space in a book-length poem. In one aspect, he succeeds; his space traveller (an Earthling sent into deep space, to report on what's there when he comes back) slides into insanity as the poem goes on, and when he encounters other humans again, that is quite capably presented. ut there's nothing here to distinguish the language, and it ends up reading like a cut up short story:

Can man endure immersed in nothingness?

Man can

Man's logic tells man

If

He will impact himself

With those essential things which

Are feed for man's essential parts...

It was a try, and not especially a good one. * 1/2
