"The Coming Dark Age" is a provocative argument against social dependence on large systems. By systems, Vacca means the machinery, such as traffic systems, that regulate the flow of society. He predicted that a series of crises would occur that would trigger a century-long dark age. This has not yet happened, but the threat still remains. With the upcoming Year 2000 problem, the concerns of this book need to be re-examined and quickly. Sadly, the book is marred by an overestimation of social ills. However, Vacca's excellent examples demonstrate that these problems have not been solved. If society does not continue to take steps to reduce the congestion of industrial systems, they will break down. Furthermore, individuals must lighten the load placed on the global environment or its resources will be exhausted.
