Outstanding study of the Holy Spirit in Scripture
Professor Unger tears away the improper context of today and unverifiable experience to expound what the Bible says in its true historical context about the Holy Spirit. Quite simply one of the finest studies of the work and office of the Holy Spirit in this dispensation of the Church. A classic.-Kelly Whiting

Biblical Demonology
Very academic. Written by a well educated man of god. Scripturally accurate. Excellent exposition on the doctrine of demonolgy. If you are of the charasmatic bent or want to rid demons from your city, you will be disappointed. If you are seeking truth in regard to this doctrine, get it!

The best Bible commentary I've come across.
What I like most about Mr. Unger's commentary is that he shows Christ throughout. He highlights where Christ is prefigured or foreshadowed and how Christ fulfilled all that was to be fullfilled. The commentary is written from the perspective of Christianity's Herbraic roots. A great study reference.

The Best Commentary Available
The book will be most appreciated by those searching for a true grace-oriented scholar who glorifies the Lord, not himself, in his writings. Words cannot describe how inspirational this work is. Unger's pedigree is outstanding, his scholarship supreme and his style easy-going and understandable. When reading his Commentary, one can imagine taking feverish notes at his class lectures at Dallas Theological Seminary. What a rare honor and treat that would have been! This book is the Magnum Opus of the greatest Old Testament Scholar of our time.

the best guide to the bible ever.
This is an incredible book that examines the basic ideas in each book of the bible; looks at it in historical context; in symbolic interpretive context and more. The dictionary is incredible. And includes also a concordance and maps. A must-have guide to anyone studying the Bible. Full of insight too.

Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words: W.E. Vine ; Edited by Merrill F. Unger, William White, Jr

Value-Packed Bible Research Tool
The value of a one-stop Greek and Hebrew research tool is enormous. W. E. Vine and company have made an easy-to-use publication that will track many of the more asked-about words and phrases as read from the King James Version of the Bible. It is not exhaustive, but the material it contains for the words it does cover more than makes up for the price. It will perhaps surprise many students to discover that the way they traditionally view the word's meaning may be incorrect. Vine wanted to trace the word's original meaning and then examine how people changed it through time (such as the word "stauros" meaning "stake," not "cross," "Hallelujah" actually having the meaning of "Praise ye Jah," etc.). Since it is keyed into the Strong's Numbering System for tracking original word usage in the Bible's ancient manuscripts, it makes this fun and easy to use for the occasional student while powerful enough for the advanced user. This work definitely deserves a place on any Bible Student's shelves

VINES COMPLETE EXPOSITORY DICTIONARY
This book is a great tool for those willing to research particular words and meanings of Bible lexicon. It teaches how the same word is used [noun/verb] and how this affects its meaning in the scriptures. A great addition to any library!

Probably the best Word Study Tool for the Layman
Vine's has stood the test of time and proven itself as a valuable reference work for scholar and layman alike.

Although the book does not define every word in the Bible, it does cover many of the most theologically important words in a very thorough fashion.

This version of Vine's contains White's Old Testament dictionary which is superior to the original Vine's Old Testament dictionary which was incomplete. Together with the New Testament dictionary, it forms a solid word study tool for anyone interested in going deeper into God's Word.

Highly recommended.

Excellent NT Greek tool for ALL believers
There are numerous Greek NT (New Testament) tools out there, but very few are helpful for lay believers who do not have the knowledge of the Greek. But Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary (VCED) is perfect for ALL believers. I have used it for 16 years thus far and still use it! Here are reasons for high recommendation:
1. You do NOT need Greek knowledge to use this book. It is that simple and arranged that way, using KJV of the Bible as the main text.
2. It explains KJV word in an original Greek in context. It provides the meaning of the word in a proper context of Greek background. For example: In English Bible, there is only one word for "love" but in NT Greek, there are four (two being used the mostly). Therefore VCED fills the gap between English Bible and Greek NT nicely and effectively.
3. It provides the definition of a word (KJV word) more accurately than the English dictionary because it uses Greek use of the word. For example: The word, "godliness (1Tim. 2:2)" in Merriam Webster Collegiate Dictionary is defined as "1: Divine 2: pious, devout -" but in VCED, it defines it as " 'to be devout,' denotes that piety which characterized by a Godward attitude, does that which is well-pleasing to Him." It provides fuller meaning of the word by explaining how the word is used in the NT.
4. It can be used with Strong's Exhaustive Concordance. Every word is numbered with Strong's number so you can use it more efficiently.
5. This edition includes OT Dictionary as well. Although not written by Vine himself, it still is helpful, but is not as complete as Vine's NT.
6. This edition is clear in typeset (modernized). Previous editions were bad to read because of its old typeset.

Some Tips:
(a) If you want to use this book, you must have KJV of the Bible alongside VCED. All entries are given in KJV word.
(b) To save a step, you might want to consider using, "The New Enlgishman's Greek Concordance and Lexicon (Hendrickson Publisher)." It is also coded with Strong's number and uses KJV renderings of the verse.

All in all, it is an excellent tool for Bible Study. I heartily recommend it to all believers.

One of the best...
I frequently find myself returning to this dictionary time and again, because it has so much valuable information in it and because it is very extensive in its wide range of topics (for example, ever wondered what 'Selah' means in the Psalms? - it's in here). I would highly recomend this to anyone who is seeking to better understand terms, ideas, names, places, etc... in the Bible.

Unger One of the Great Bible Scholars of the 20th Century
Unger's greatness is in his humility. His writings seek to glorify The Lord, not himself. I also recommend his Commentary on the Old Testament, by far the best-ever written. Unger is a christian to be honored and his writings should be treasured. This book is a must-have for the grace-oriented believer.

A concise reference
This is an excellent reference for anyone who is interested in careful and concise Biblical explanations and definitions. The scholarship is current, and its premise that the Bible is inerrant is certainly welcome by those who desire a dependable reference for Biblical analysis.

Additionally, because of the superciliousness of the reader who gave this work a one-star rating (i.e., 'A reader from USA'), his remarks, in this reviewer's opinion, should be substantially discounted. Instead, let the merits of the work be the principal criteria as regards its true worth.

A not too bad reference tool....
The UBH is fairly informative, and I found the info on the early church and canon formation very helpful. However the theological beliefs of the author creep in a lot. In Revelation, for instance, he only treats the futurist view of interpretation as worthwhile, while dismissing the other views without any real evidence against them. I have found this book was very useful when I was a younger Christian, but now it basically sits on the shelf. I think the NIV Study Bible's notes and package are the better way to go.

Interesting and very thorough
This is the best example of the type of reference work that I could locate. I purchased it at retail price because it was readily available at that time. It has proven somewhat valuable in my research of the scriptures by its coverage of the archaeology and culture of its time.
