Hilda Murrell
Hilda Murrell was famous for many years among horticulturalists as one of Britain's finest rose-growers, her murder in the early 1980's at the hands of the British Secret service robbed the world of a woman whose sharp mind was always focused on her science, but whose deepest instincts were those of fairness and justice. This book reminds us of what a great woman Hilda really was.

Hilda Rix Nicholas: Her Life and Art
Published in Hardcover by Melbourne University Press (2000)
Authors: John Pigot and Hilda Rix Nicholas
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Enthusiastically recommended for art history students.
Hilda Rix Nicholas: Her Life And Art is the biographical survey of a truly remarkable artist and her unique artistic achievements. She held several solo exhibitions in Europe and Australia, and in 1926 was elected an associate of the Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris. Yet despite being a phenomenal painter, she has been virtually ignored by western art historians and either excluded from or marginalized in the annals of Australian art history. That sad omission is now superbly remedied through this magnificent edition detailing her life's work and accomplishments. John Pigot documents & profusely illustrates the enduring talent of remarkable artist who refused to comply with the restrictive role socially, culturally, and professional imposed on other women artists of her time. The challenging nature of her work and her unwillingness to accept a subordinate position within the artistic hierarchy made it virtually impossible for her to achieve the kind of recognition that she so richly deserved -- then or (until the publication of this fine art history) now. Hilda Rix Nicholas is enthusiastically recommended reading for students of art history and 20th Century women's history studies.

How Hilda Hushed Her Hiccups: Letter-Sound Listen & Retell Adventure S

Move over Berenstein Bears
Move over Berenstein Bears' AB&C rhyming books and make way for How Hilda (a hyena) Hushed Her Hiccups:

"As she hopped and hiccuped and hiccuped and hopped, the hyenas around the Hair Hut must stopped! 'Help me,' cried Hilda, 'to stay on the ground! with these hiccuping hiccups I hop all around!' One hyena piped up, 'I know what to do! Try hopping on one leg and then hop on two.' 'Or this,' yelled another. 'Just try something neat. You could hang upside down with your head by your feet!'"

The beautifully drawn and delightfully bouncy story will give beginning readers and their parents the giggles while learning words that begin with the letter H. It also is accompanied by an audio CD with sound effects and songs. The next soon-to-be-published book (and CD) in the series is Finny (fish) Finds Friends in the Forest.

It will be a while, though, before the Tinis and their talented non-sister staff complete the whole series of funny rhyming alphabet books. Teachers and school librarians will be happy to know that three of the five Tini sisters, the ones who established the Atori Publishing Company, have education degrees and classroom teaching experience. In fact, Mariellen Tini is currently an elementary school principal!

I highly recommend this wonderful book to everyone!

Grandmother's Gift
I grew up with the Betty Crocker children's cookbook. I think this one is better. I appreciate the fact that the recipes are grouped by skills, but doesn't quite "say" that certain recipes are for younger children. Kids can use this book based on the amount of energy they want to put into cooking something, and that's terrific. I bought this for my future grandchildren, and another woman in the office is buying one for herself and the parents of each of her seven grandchildren. Brilliant present, and a smart thing to have in your kitchen, I'd say.

Inspirational
I got this book after my close and long time girlfriend was diagnosed with breast cancer. I have read it straight thru and will share it with her. I can't say enough for the brilliant writer's stories of courage and their tenacity to face life head on! Even for those of us fortunate not to have to go thru this terrible cancer ordeal, it is a book of courage and strength and about what really's important in this life. It reminds us of how precious each day is.
