The boning Knife
The boning knife was a really intriging mystery full of terror and suspense. I love the way the author has completely different scenes in some chapters. She leaves little hints in some chapters to tell you it is all the same story.

Count Your Blessings
Canadian Summer is a book that makes you count your blessings. Hilda VanStockum has become our family's favorite author. Her writing is magical. She draws you into the story so you feel as if you are a part of it.
Because of a job transfer and limited resources, the Mitchell family was forced to move to a rustic cabin in the mountains. The cabin was far from a town and they had no transportation. VanStockum makes us love the Mitchell family. We can feel their humiliation as they come into church, the first morning in a new town, all bedraggled or dirty for various reasons.
This book is a glimpse into family life with all of its ups and downs. When the book is finished you will feel a loss, but then you will appreciate the relatively easy life we all live due to modern conveniences.

Outstanding!
If you buy ONE book on how to coach volleyball, make it this one. Carl McGown is the "guru" of volleyball and if you read this book, implement what it says, your team will be better RIGHT NOW!
A book which goes beyond the x and o's to provide the coach with the correct skills and attitudes necessary to compete at a high level.

"The most helpful book (encyclopedia?) on this subject"
I am the publisher and own the publishing rights to The Complete Handbook of Children's Reading Disorders. It is no longer available from Human Sciences Press. I would like to offer a review by Dr. William Cruickshank, Professor Emeritus of Child and Family Health, Psychology and Education, University of Michigan which is printed on the paperback, 2-volume, 1987 edition of the book's back cover. Dr. Cruickshank passed away two years ago.
He said, "It is unusual that a doctor of medicine has become an authority on the theoretical and clinical aspects of reading. Dr. Mosse illustrates that authority extensively and intensively. Her original two volumes, now together in paperback and appropriately subtitled, "You Can Prevent or Correct Learning Disorders," is a compendium of significant information. It indeed could and should serve as a text for educational courses for teachers of children with learning disabilities as well as provide valuable insights for classroom and remedial teachers, parents, aides and others concerned with learning disorders. Here is a book by an author who knows her subject matter, who obviously knows disabled children and who understands appropriate intervention and prevention procedures. This book should be on the library shelves of every university and in the office of every professor of education, every superintendent, principal and disability specialist."
Another reviewer who should be quoted posthumously is Dr. Frederick Wertham, M.D., founder of the Wertham Clinic, New York. He said, "Pediatricians, neurologists, psychologists, educators, therapists -- anyone involved in the life of a child experiencing a reading disorder and its attendant anguish -- will find this a valuable guide and aid. This is the only book dealing with all pertinent and related facts of learning disorders in an eminently practical and vigorously scientific way."
The book carries Forewords by both Dr. Lendon Smith, well-known pediatrician and nutrition expert and by Dr. Barbara Bateman, Ph.D., J.D., now Professor Emeritus of Reading, Learning Disabilities and Law, University of Oregon who finished her two-page review with these words, "This is the one source that is essential. One cannot be fully informed about reading disorders without it. A monumental contribution."
My own review is this: "Here is a doctor of medicine and psychiatry (not a teacher) who found an exemplary method of instruction which enabled her, on her own, to teach one thousand of her disturbed and disabled psychiatric student-patients from the New York City school system to read. What other proof should we need that this lady has some remarkable things to tell us? This is why our non-profit literacy agency, with some help from the small foundation Dr. Mosse left, decided to publish these two volumes in affordable paperback to make them available to all who can and should make use of them." Dr. Mosse passed away one day before the original two volumes came off the Human Sciences Press, and so was not able to help in its promotional work. Her entire research library is archived by The Riggs Institute in our international offices in Beaverton, Oregon. You may read more about the method she used at our web site at: http://www.riggsinst.org."

A must read book for all teachers
With the outrageous increase in the number of children being labeled as "learning disabled" in public schools, this book is a must read for any teacher that truly cares about children learning more than "being creative." Preventing reading difficulties from the beginning is key to getting this country reading again.

Fascinating History of the American Date Palm
Ms Simon creates a vivid kaleidoscope of facts and artifacts on the date palm. She begins with the date's honored roles as shown in the Bible, the Koran, and archaeological sculptures then continues up to the arrival of the early date palms which were transplanted from Africa and the Middle East and ends with their propagation and development in the USA. Her expressive writing makes the reader feel part of the journey, tasting the fruit, melting in the desert heat, and thirsting for the next oasis. Many photos are priceless records of her father's journey while her artistic drawings capture the faithful details of the date palm. The reader will enjoy every one of the book's 158 pages and will find it hard to classify it as a botanical masterpiece, a breathtaking travelogue or a daughter's labor of love.

This book is a treasure
This is a wonderful book for younger children, and their older siblings, too. It portrays the values and attitudes of days gone by when boys were masculine and girls were feminine and everyone was happy that it was so. The story is interesting, the action is well-paced and fun; you feel as if you have been on the picnic with the children! One of our favorite books!

Accounts of the efforts to save books and valuable papers are detailed by breaking down these efforts for each country that felt the full thrust of Hitler's invading armies.
This work is a monument to the librarians who risked life and livelihood to save and protect their repositories of knowledge. The book gives accounts of the means by which librarians were able to conceal and preserve books, as well as continue the operations although they were under direct Nazi supervision.
The author has explored a part of World War II which has not been recorded before. Even in the instutions affected there were no histories available and some libraries were destroyed completely.
The book is a valuable research tool for anyone connected with libraries or for the general reader with World War II interests.
