Beautifully crafted!
This beautifully crafted series of poems explores the meanings of 'trans', from the author's experiences with breast cancer to her adult child's female-to-male transition. Loss, movement, and processes of forging new understanding are important themes. The volume is organized into sections, each of which begins with a dictionary definition of the prefix 'trans-'. Raz is one of theUnited States' most important contemporary poets and editors of poetry, so it is no surprise that she handles these issues with such dexterity in this book.

Hilda Perkins - Her Dedication Shows in a Seminal Work
The author of this work was my student for several years both before going to Japan and after returning. She has taken a vary difficult oriental concept, integrated it with western ideas and put it to words for westerners. Her book is essentially a non-martial exploitation of the same concepts which appear in C.M. Shifflett's "Ki in Aikido". Hilda's book contains a necessary amount of discussion about basic concepts of tri-tuning (mind-body-spirit integration), a term she coined to describe what she felt about life and the need to bring all parts of her being into balance. Her writings are clearly influenced by her training in Japan with Aikido Master Koichi Tohei and his desciple, Koretoshi Maruyama.

The book is highly readable to those with an open mind, providing not only discussions of hard to understand concepts but also exercises the reader can try themselves to validate what has been said. Take some time to read the Table of Contents to understand the organization of the information. This will be a great aid in using the book, because this is a book that you will use, and use again to help you integrate your mind-body-spirit self. Then you will find yourself talking to others in your acquaintence about what you have learned. You will likely become an advocate of her concepts for yourself and others.

From a student of history
Doctor Smith has a keen grasp of the subject matter which allowed her to combine others and her work into an interesting book. This work allows the reader to gain a new insight into the different views on women's history and history in general. Furthermore, I found her to be an even better instructor than author and enjoyed the learning and time I spent with her at the University of Cincinnati. I encourage those who can attend her lectures to do so and those who cann't to read this work and her others.
