Wonderful Compilation.
I received this book today and I am immediately in love with it. This is the most comprehensive book (in English) about Ghalib's poetry that I have come across thus far.

I love the fact that every verse is provided in Urdu script, Transliterated English, and in Translated English. Then, the author delves into the metaphor and imagery at play within the verse with a healthy sprinkling of historical references. This leaves the reader with as good a grasp that one could hope to have without being a native Urdu speaker.

Since, I can read and write Urdu, this book is even more enjoyable. Ghalib's Urdu vocabulary had such a heavy Persian influence which left even his colleagues at a loss. In this book every Persian word is explained making it easy to grasp. Also, the lexicon provided within the book is simply excellent!

The only aspect of this book that leaves something to be desired is the quality of paper used. I wish that the paper was a bit heavier.

Overall, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the work of this prolific and masterful poet.

I am adding the following at a later date:

Two days after I received the book, the spine broke and now the back cover is not attached to the book. I did expect this to happen because the binding of the book was not commensurate with the weight of the pages. So, before you purchase this book, bear in mind that the hardcover version can easily fall apart. Even so, I would recommend this book. It is simply wonderful.

An Boon for Ghazal lovers
I highly recommend this book for all lovers of urduu poetry. It is particularly useful for serious students of the Ghazal form for whom interpreting Ghalib has always been an "issue". Not only does Dr. Niazi dwell at length on the imageries used by Ghalib, but in many cases also gives contextual references to incidents in Ghalib's life to help interpret a couplet better. Again, some couplets are understood only within a historical/social context - and Dr. Niazi provides the same in such cases. Note that each couplet is followed by a LITERAL (not idiomatic) translation and then by an elaborate explication. The explication also addresses multiple inherent interpretations if they exist. Dr. Niazi also points out, in many cases, erroneous interpretations that are in vogue.

Budding/Fledgeling poets may use this work to enhance their own understanding of symbols and idioms as used in urduu poetry (in addition to making sense out of the obscurity that is Ghalib). For established scholars this book can serve as a ready reference (or sanity check!).

Note: While the couplets are presented first in the original persian script, they are also transliterated using the roman script for the benefit of those that do not read the original.

Love Poems from East
Love and poems of love are universal; how an Eastern mind presents its dilemmas of love are remarkably rendered by the most famous poet of the East--Mirza Ghalib. Beautiful Urdu calligraphy with ample English explication makes reading this poetry from a distant culture a true delight.

From Plassey to Pakistan
Published in Hardcover by University Press of America (20 October, 1999)
Author: Humayun Mirza
Amazon base price: $44.50
Used price: $35.00

A new perspective on a troubled land
Most of what we in the West read and hear about the Indian subcontinent comes from the British perspective. Humayun Mirza, son of Pakistan's first president and descendant of the royal Nawab Nazims of Bengal, Bihar, and Orissa, brings a thoroughly researched, enlightened, and deeply honest perspective to his family's story, and by extension the history of India and Pakistan from the 1700s to the present time. Because of his unique insider's perspective, Mirza makes his historical figures come alive.

Although he is talking about his own family--even his own father--Mirza shows a principled unwillingness to tamper with the truth, even when the truth is not flattering to people he clearly admires. The rich human complexity of these powerful personalities, warts and all, is one of the things that make this book so exciting.

If you're interested in the history and politics of the region, this is a must read. If you just like to learn interesting history, it's also a treat. I'm waiting for the update covering the current situation in the region!

Recommended history reading
From Plassey to Pakistan chronicles the lineage of Humuyan Mirza, the author and only son of the first President of Pakistan. The book provides personal and well-researched historical insight into the ruling class of India, of which the author is a direct descendant.

The author's father, and principal subject of the latter part of the book, is Iskander Mirza, a highly educated and respected citizen of India worked for the British Government of India. Upon the end of British rule in 1947, the country of Pakistan was formed and Iskander Mirza emerged to become a leading public figure ("the strong man") and eventually the first President of Pakistan.

The author offers excellent insight into his father's rise to the presidency and the subsequent challenge to bring order and democracy to the newly formed country, one fraught with political corruption at the governmental and military level combined with a high level of illiteracy within the population. Despite Iskander Mirza's well intentioned efforts, instituting the type of democratic government he envisioned would prove too difficult in this environment. His presidency was usurped by a military coup in 1958. Military control has presided over Pakistan for many of the subsequent years and remains in power today.

The author goes on to revisit his own life as a descendant of India's ruling and princely class as the son of the first president of Pakistan. Like his father Isakander, the author was educated at prestigious schools while growing up, ultimately attending the Harvard School of Business and subsequently working in various capacities for the World Bank. The author currently lives in the United States.

Toward the end of the book, the author offers thoughtful suggestions that address Pakistan's current political and economic situation. Above all, the author believes a very strong leader of Pakistan is crucial to help unite the country and its divisive factions. He truly desires prosperity for Pakistan.

The book is insightful and well written. I highly recommend the book for histroy readers and those interested in current events. Given the recent tumultuous events taking place in and around Pakistan, this book is even more relevant.

A book by a gifted Man
Hazrat M. Ghulam Ahmad was a great person. He was gifted and guided by God himself. All of his books are very well written and are all worth reading. Most of them are defending the religion of Islam. He was born in Qadian India about a hundred years ago. He wrote these books mostly in Urdu, Arabic, and Persian. His arguments are very well said. They are mostly from the Holy Quran. He was a great man. He made the claim to be the Messiah of the time. The messiah that was prophisised in all the major religions of the world. Now he has a community called the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam. Millions of people follow his teachings. And of course the beautiful teaching of Hazrat Muhammad Mustafa s.a.w. His community is increasing in large numbers like soldiers of the true islam. (...)

Thank You and May Allah Bless You
