A Picture Book of Martin Luther King, Jr
Published in Hardcover by Live Oak Media (1998)
Authors: David A. Adler, Robert Casilla, and Charles Turner
Amazon base price: $25.95

History in pictures
Filled with teachings of peacefully protesting fair laws for all people, David
Adler gives us a picture book of Martin Luther King, Jr. In it, he shares the
early life of MLK Jr, his young experiences with racism and segregation and on
to his dreams as well as highlights some of his well-known protests. In these
protests, he speaks of a world free of hate, prejudice and violence.

This book is a great lesson in history for our children and also covers a few
other events in the plight for civil rights. Casilla's illustrations do a
decent job of giving us a pictorial view of the events chronicling King's life.

Excellent first biography
The entire "A picture book of..." biography series byDavid Adler is outstanding. Perfect for lower elementary studentsdoing their first real report. Makes a great read-aloud for non-readers as they are easily completed in one sitting. They are loaded with information including a timeline of important dates. The illustrations in this book are not cartoon-like as in his other biographies of Washington or Lincoln, but are appealing to young children.

Black American History: Nat Turner to the Compromise of 1850
"Milestones in Black American History" is a 16-volume exploration of the black experience from ancient Egypt to the present day, with each volume focusing on a specific period of African-American history. "Days of Sorrow, Years of Glory," focuses on the pivotal period between the slave revolt led by Nat Turner in southeastern Virginia in 1813 and the passage of the controversial Fugitive Slave Act by the U.S. Congress as part of the Great Compromise of 1850. Timothy J. Paulson contrasts the story of bondage in slavery for millions of African-Americans with the efforts of free blacks who produced an impressive array of industrial inventions, novels, music, sermons, newspapers, and political oratory. Paulson covers racist violence in the North, the foundation of the American Anti-Slavery Society, the murder of Elijah P. Lovejoy, the black bandmaster Frank Johnson, the Battle of Lockahatchee between the U.S. Army and a black-Seminole army, David Ruggles's first black magazine, the "Amistad" and "Creole" slave ship revolts, and more.

"Days of Sorrow, Years of Glory" goes beyond the most famous names in the struggle of black Americans for liberty (Harriet Tubman, Sojourner Truth, Frederick Douglass) to tell about Norbert Rillieux, William Henry Lane, and Joseph Cinque. I was pretty well versed in the political side of the story in terms of how the nation got from the Missouri Compromise to the Great Compromise of 1850, but Paulson is focusing more on the social side of the struggle. As a result, it is rather surprising to see how much was happening in Black American History in the years before the decade leading up to the Civil War. This book is illustrated with contemporary etchings, drawings, cartoons, and photographs from the period, including a photograph of the Hanging Tree where Nat Turner was executed, the title page of a book written by Frederick Douglass, and a much-reprinted lithograph entitled "The Old Plantation" showing the South's idealized view of slavery. For classes, students and teachers who want more information about American History from the African-American perspective than they will find in their textbooks, this is an excellent series.

How video and sound can be integrated into Flash!!
This book will do exactly what they said wasn't possible by illustrating how video and sound can be integrated into your Flash presentations, placing you at the extreme edge of creative web design. The application of such tools as AfterEffects, QuickTime, SoundForge and Wildform test the boundaries of Flash and suggest ways to take sound and video beyond Flash and into the realms of Shockwave.

Showing you how to break your site down and incorporate video and sound, the techniques covered in this book capitalise on the capabilities of Flash whilst tackling its limitations head-on. It will then look at how to take web ideo and sound a step further with Shockwave presentations.

Read this 20 years ago as a young adult, GREAT period Bio.
Thanks to Kodansha for republishing this book. I bought it second- or third-hand twenty years ago as a young adult, and lost it in a house fire two years later. I¹ve been scrounging used book stores for it ever since. This book has often been in my mind over the years as a story of a determined young woman who followed her own dreams and found, in her husband, a friend who shared her ideas. If you have an interest in history from the first quarter of this century, photography, airplanes, anthropology, wildlife, Africa, headhunters, or just enjoy love stories -- you will find this a fascinating read. I heartily recommend it as a book about the role women had in the exploration of the world early in this century. Amelia Earhart didn¹t go half the places Osa did: she just had better press. The path that an average, turn-of-the-century woman takes from the ribbons and ruffles of her little-girl days to the pith helmets, rogue elephants, and head hunters that filled her life as a young bride is astounding. I believe that even if Osa had never met Martin Johnson, we would still be reading about her accomplishments today. What happens to them in their travels around the world will hardly be believed by today¹s young readers. This was a time when there were still undocumented civilizations, fantastic ³unseen² lands, and undiscovered creatures. Film cameras were turned by a hand crank at just so many revolutions per minute or the film was ruined. Precious film could be ruined by heat, fungus or moisture. Often, first-encounter footage was ruined due to spoiled developing chemicals, or was lost in the scramble to leave an island before the Johnson couple became the main course at the next party. This couple defined the ³travelogue" format in a time before talkies. They are the cinegraphic ancestors to Jacque Cousteau and to shows such as Omaha¹s Wild Kingdom, National Geographic Specials, and Nature. Osa writes of a time in history that few of us today can imagine. Please, let her show you our world, as she saw it for the first time.

One of the best books I ever read
There was a copy of this book in our family bookshelf as I was growing up. I read this book over and over, as did many of my siblings. This book grabs you on page one and rushes you forward through the most amazing adventures in the South Seas, then Africa. I buy every second hand copy of this book I find and gift it to one of my siblings, so we can pass it on to our children.

My Familys Favorite Book
This book is great for all ages. It is one of the most exciting books I have ever read. I picked this book up thinking it was going to be a dull story about traveling. I couldn't put it down. I think I must have finished it within a week. It is packed with death threating adventure, tragedy, romance and so much more.

An up-to-date text, useful for the competent beginner
I bought the book after (and despite) the review of the Reader From Austin, TX; and I was not disappointed by this book. Martin covers all aspects of U/W photography in a concise way, giving just enough examples and explanations. It provides a lot of feedback on using common contemporary housed systems, which not many other presently available books do.

I agree that it offers little in terms of complete basics; and it will not stretch the professionals. But hey, I'd like to think that I fit in the middle. And I do not want to waste another 20 rolls of expensive slide film before finding out where I went wrong. Martin's book has warned me in advance about some of the pitfalls.

The only possible criticism is that the book could have provided more than just a couple of examples for each described situation. However, this would make the book big and pricey. And as it is, you can even take this reasonably slim volume with you on the liveaboard.

Second to none!
I have read this book over and over again to absorb all the information! It is so good and contain a wealth of information. Comparing it wit the books by Danja and Annmarie Kohler, Mark Webster and Jim Church's book on composition, this one comes in as a clear first. Mark Webster's book is a relatively close runner up, but it is Marin's book that always join me on my trips and elsewhere. Photography in all books is good but Martin provides the most and best information. Jim's book is a waste of money compared to the rest. Overprized with very little hard info. Just a ton of mumbojumbo. The book by Koehler is ok, but way behind Webster, and in particular. Edge's books! Get it and love it!

Superb
Martin Edge's book should be considered a Bible for the underwater photographer, particularly for those diving with housed SLR's. Jim Church's books on the Nikonos system and on composition, are extremely helpful, but Martin Edge provides clear and to the point advice for the housed Nikon SLR user, as well as providing general instruction in uw photography. I'm a professional photographer on land, but a newbie to underwater photography, and I found this book appropriate for both levels of experience. If you plan to do uw photography, buy it. If you plan to use a housed SLR, buy it twice!
