Very informative book
I am a former Russian journalist and a documentary filmmaker who has also worked at NASA in the US.

"The Anatomy of Russian Defense Conversion" touches on many more subjects then just Russian Defense Industry. This is a very thorough, informative and important work that analyses the history of US and Russian Defense Industries, weapons exports and conversion, and possibilities of transformation from a militarized to a civilian economy in the new millenium.

The book also reflects on the current state of defense industries in the US and Russia, and "brain drain", or loss of intellectual capital in Russia and other countries after the Cold War.

I found reflections in Arkady Yarovsky's chapter "From the Culture of War to the Culture of Peace" very contemporary, especially in the light of recent events in the Middle East:

"Our time is unfortunately still characterized as "the culture of war." The culture of war is evident first and foremost in the hostilities between people and states, between nations and faiths, and in the inability to solve conflicts by peaceful means... Humanity has made it into the third millenium because the lust for power has been restrained by fear of nuclear war, but this restraint is not to be counted on permanently... The danger hidden in the separateness of people of different countries, unfortunately, remains a legacy for the next century... If humanity renounces the legacy of the culture of war, it can start down the road of cooperation, peaceful creation, and enlightenment. This is the only road leading to the culture of peace."

A Subject of Mutual Interest
One can imagine that I, as a small child living in San Antonio, Texas, next to three Air Force bases and an Army base, living through the Cuban missile crisis, thought about the threat of the Russian military. I also met my parents' wonderful emigre' friends, and to this day have had warm relations with Russian people.

This book tells of the enormous cost to the Russian people of building and maintaining their war industry for so many years, a militarized economy where people got second best. Since the breakup of the Soviet Union, defense industry just about shut down, but civilian industry has not grown great enough to support the population. There are horrendous unemployment, and terrible health and social problems. There is some danger that the path of least resistance for Russia, if we neglect the situation, could be to re-start weapons production, for export at first.

In my opinion, the United States also, to a lesser degree, has neglected the manufacture of quality consumer goods, importing them instead, and has let its physical economy deteriorate, despite much activity in the financial sector. We, too, have been insufficiently careful of the environment. This book provides some idea of what these trends could lead to, if carried to extremes.

Perhaps the involvement of United States companies in Russia, could lead to more of a recognition here, of the importance of the physical economy. Hopefully, both countries could also work to put industry on a healthy environmental footing as well.

There is awareness of the problem of Russian defense conversion, at high levels of our government. I hope this book helps educate people and sustain that interest.

Lies (People Believe) About Animals
There are 11 major reviews of animals, and over 20 minor reviews. In each of these reviews I found at least one thing that I believed about the animal that was not true. Usually these are major believes which are wrong.

I found the writing style very easy to read and understand. The photographs were very good and very unusual. And the layout of the book was very pleasing to look at and invited the reader inside.

This is a terrific book for kids. I have had it out on my coffee table and children always pick it up and read it.

Thanks for a job well done.

Christian Devotional Breaks Tradition Using Nature
Having grown up experiencing many types of devotional-style books, I have quickly learned what I like and don't like. I do not like books heavy on religious rhetoric and empty language, quoting one Bible verse after another, with a small anecdote if you're lucky. This is no such book. Whether or not you consider yourself a nature-lover, experiencing any of these 366 devotionals will give you a new perspective on the world of Nature. Each story is primarily a portrayal of some element of nature and how incredible it is with a small but necessary religious application at the end. The author uses God's natural world to draw the conclusions, rather than other authors who attempt to push their own conclusions on the reader. An excellent read, and good luck trying to read one per day!

The colors of Mississippi's capital come alive!
Wyatt Water's collection of watercolors are vibrant representations of nostalgic city scapes in Jackson. His rainbow pallete is painted on location, giving each work a caught-in-time feel. A breif history of the subject is given for each picture. This book is a pleasure to open over and over again.

Soul stirring!
One of the best bio's I have read! Took only 3-4 days to read since it moved at a very fast pace with so many things happening in James Browns life. His upbringing, music, family, record companies, IRS, managers, riots, struggles are all here. Before reading this I was a big fan even though I was not sure of the place this man occupied in music, as an innovater and business person, now I do. The first man to popularize the "live" album, strict band leader, tireless composer/arranger, producer, drummer, singer, dancer and many more things that one person had in him (as well as surrounded himself with exceptional musicians and some exceptional business partners). Also learned of his ethnic background which is Asian/Black/Indian. Many roadblocks on the way and a glimpse of what the business end of the entertainment world is like round out an exceptional and candid look into the life of Soul brother number 1!

JB Dancer, Your Life Is Calling (!)
I'm usually not so crazy about Star Biographies... for a variety of reasons, they're usually attention getting "feel bad for me" vs. "worship me" ploys taken from the pages of magazines atleast I wouldn't be caught dead reading outside of a doctor's office, however - - THIS BOOK IS DIFFERENT (!) It is enormously well written - - Though its pretty clear Bruce Tucker wrote most of it, he managed to dig down into JBs soul and convey his RAGS TO RICHES story quite convincingly, capturing his voice while telling about his rise and fall (<-- the IRS and disco got him) and his come back at the time This book is so well written that I've actually reread it SEVERAL times since it initially came out in the mid '80s. - - Though it is a bit ironical that JBs life would get a bit more "complicated" after it was written (the drugs, run-ins with the law, death of his wife etc.) it is clear that Brown & Tucker have presented to the world a book that's engrossing and definitely a keeper... It will bring a whole new meaning to the music !

a must read
very powerful&uplifting.it touches on many different subjects.racisim, poverty etc..who hasn't this man not influenced? to see a human being overcome so many hardships&provide a innovative sound&style is incredible.but Mr.brown is a man with few peers on his level.this book explores the legend&genius of james brown.

Great Intro to American Politics Textbook
Excellent intro to politics text. I highly recommend it for a classroom or for anyone really who wants to sit down with a plain-spoken piece to get you to understand our government. Whether it is for someone with little knowledge as to who this vast bureaucracy works, or for someone with a fairly good knowledge of it all - I don't think it will disappoint.
I think what I appreciated the most was the honesty that the text was written. The authors also included a good amount of humor to emphasize the point (in cartoon, comic, Top 10 List, etc), in order to keep a reader interested.
I think this text is also a good reference as well, as there are numerous court cases and explicit examples of gov't at work - that if you are ever at a loss for "what was it that happened?" or "what does that term mean?" Things are extremely easy to find and be referred to.
Good works.

Surprising End, Great Storyline!
I happened upon this book and was surprised by how well-written it was for a practicing physician. Another surprise was the Pittsburgh setting. As a Pittsburgher, I enjoy stories set in my own hometown. The reason I gave the book 4 out of 5 stars was the gruesomeness of the murders. I realize the author is a doctor (pediatrician), but his descriptions of things creeped me out.

If you enjoy Cornwell-esque murders and Robin Cook-like stories this book is for you. I look forward to the other books by this author.

A very pleasant surprise
When I picked up this book, I wasn't expecting much. The cover and title are goofy, and even the author's photo and bio make the book look like a third rate "cozy" mystery. But it isn't.

The plot was gripping! The murder scenes and descriptions were so vivid and horrendous, I could barely keep reading (makes you want to cover your eyes like at a horror movie). The intensity kept building as the pages flew by. The author uses his medical knowledge well in building a believable murder mystery. Count me in as a new James Tucker fan. His entry into the genre of medical thrillers should be noted!

Amazing Book!
If you read Tucker's first book, 'Abra Cadaver', and was a little disappointed with it (as was I), do not be discouraged! Stick with this guy! His second, Hocus Corpus, is a lot better after we have already gotten familiar with the characters (but that's another review). The best reason for sticking with Tucker is definitely Tragic Wand.

This book is fast paced and smart, leaving the reader thinking they've solved the mystery time and time again, only to uncover some clue that twists your entire theory around. But what's most surprising is the ending, which I can guarantee, you will never see coming. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a great mystery.

Nothing very special, just a junky mystery novel...
I read this book and _Abra Cadaver_ (also by Tucker) while on vacation and snowed in for a couple weeks.

I was initially quite interested in the book, as the first few chapters happened quickly and the protagonist (Merlin, again) is a likeable guy.

The rest of the book, however, is just not too well written, and not too believeable. The plot devices are unimaginable, the dialog is choppy, and often times the author forgets to inform the reader of crucial details.

After all, a murder novel isnt a mystery if the author has not posed the "whodunnit" question with any talent; it's merely an obfuscated tale of events.

Skip this book, or pick it up second-hand and read it on a long plane flight. Its not particularly entertaining.

Give us more Jack Merlin Mysteries!

In his second Jack Merlin Mystery series, physician/author James Tucker has penned another hit!

From the first page until the last, Tucker pulls his readers into a tale of galloping corporate greed, professional treachery and murder most foul. Dr. Tucker knows his way around a hospital, a murder and he's well on his way to becoming quite a storyteller, too.

In HOCUS CORPUS, Jack Merlin has been promoted to chief resident at the prestigious Pittsburgh University Medical Center. He's still practicing magic and charming his patients. His relationship with Assistant District Attorney and fellow crime solver has progressed smoothly and things are going his way.

However, Jack's orderly life begins to unwind when he loses a young patient after a relatively simple procedure. The child's powerful father holds Jack responsible for her death and Jack must once again prove his innocence and find out who's behind the tragedy.

While trying to solve the child's death, Jack discovers a pattern in several unexpected and completely unnecessary patient deaths. Patients make it through surgery but die of massive infections just days later.

As they dig further into the mysterious deaths, Jack and Tory uncover a diabolical plot involving involves crooks of the worst kind, insurance companies and ruthless men who will stop at nothing to line their own pockets with the misery of others. How Tucker keeps all the story lines headed toward a plausible and ultimately satisfying ending is quite impressive.

I look forward to more Jack Merlin mysteries.

And, as mentioned by others, I don't think I'll be eating any Jell-O for a long, long time!

Enjoy!

Tucker is back and better than ever!
James Tucker's novel Hocus Corpus brings back Dr. Jack Merlin and this time the doctor-magician has his hands full. Tucker's brilliant writing style gives Merlin's character a real-life persona, the kind of doctor everyone needs.

This book took me just over a day to finish and like Abra Cadaver, I was kept guessing right to the very end. Tucker really knows how to put a suspense and mystery into words and this book a great read for everyone who loves a real thriller.

Dr. Merlin takes what seems to be four completely unrelated deaths and unravels a mystery that delves into the world of high priced insurance companies. Watching the novel unfold you read how Merlin puts his career and life in jeopardy to find out who is infecting these and other patients and the answers will really surprise you.

As with Abra Cadaver, this book has movie written all over it. I am beginning to become a real James Tucker fan and I cannot wait until I read his next novel. Again another excellent job!!!!!!

I really liked this book!

I wasn't prepared to like this book so much. I found myself drawn into the storyline and caring about the characters. I'm glad there's another book in the Jake Merlin series.

For my money, James Tucker has written a great debut novel. He really covers the medical thriller aspect and actually makes it interesting....the author also makes good use of Tory Welch, Assistant DA and Jake's love interest, to keep his readers interested in the legal side of the story.

Contrary to some reviewers, I thought Tucker developed his characters AND his story lines with skill and cunning...I look forward to more Jake Merlin stories.

Enjoy!

A thrill ride from beginning to end!
First off let me say that I am not a big fiction reader as to the nature of the work I do with teaching computers and networking. Abra Cadaver is the first fiction book I have read in over a year, and I must say that it's time for me to start looking at other works of fiction.

Tucker takes you on a journey of suspense and murder mixed with magic to keep you guessing right to the very end. I found that I was unable to figure out the "whodunit" until I was almost finished, which makes this book a most enjoyable reading.

Unlike other suspense-murder-mystery books this book as a twist, the main character is not only a doctor but a magician and with both of those skills blended together you get a surprising and entertaining novel.

The 375 plus page book was read in just over 3 days and for this reviewer I look forward the next novel from Tucker. For those in the movie industry this book needs a serious look as it has all the merits of a great made for television movie. Excellent job Jim - keep up the good work!!!!!!!!!

Tucker delivers what the doctor orders - a medical thriller.
Tucker gives us a magical twist on the medical murder genre - without the hocus pocus. We are reminded that "death is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're going to get". The book reveals the secrets of the mysterious murder of a medical resident in the same fascinating way that the cadaver reveals it's secrets to the medical student - one layer at a time. Clever Dr. Jack Merlin and sexy lawyer Tory Welch are the presumed protagonists, however, as the book develops the stars turn out to be the cadavers in the gross anatomy lab. They truly prove the phrase "Mortui Docent Vivos" - the dead teach the living. For those who like Robin Cook and Patricia Cornwell it's time to give James Tucker a read. The growing legions of Tucker fans are dying to read his next one.
