An ideal starting place
This book provides an excellent presentation because it smoothes out the Bible and provides a coherent, easily comprehensible, linear framework of understanding. The most helpful aspect of this arrangement of material is that in the section covering the Gospel books, it presents selected chapters in chronological order (Sunday School materials might have set a precedent here).

It's like an ideally arranged compendium of Sunday School booklets, with helpful background sections introducing major parts of the Bible. It uses a classic style of graphics, combined with various types of art as DK Publishing excels in.

Everyone who is studying Christianity should read this first, to set up a basic framework of understanding. This book portrays clearly and efficiently a point of reference to answer "What is the orthodox conventional reading of the Bible?"

This book reveals the anti-Semitism that builds up in the book of Acts; the Jews who supposedly persecuted the Christians are always shown in a two-dimensional, cardboard way, with mean expressions on their faces. This book clearly portrays the conventional Christian reading of this material. It's a good, clear portrayal of the standard orthodox way of reading the Bible.

There is an appendix of people's names in the back. The book lacks, most of all, a set of genealogy diagrams. It has a fairly good map in front, but could use more maps or at least a guide to the little maps that are dispersed throughout.

It has a great index. After reading the book cover-to-cover, I highlighted the 50% of the index entries that are least clear to me, to do a 2nd, review pass. I played a Bible trivia game and was inspired to read this book because I lacked too many of the standard Bible stories. I can tell that I'll do much better in that Bible trivia game, and will do even better after reviewing more of the unfamiliar entries I found in this book's index.

I felt that getting through this book required the most perseverance when wading through the section about the kings who did or didn't worship God, and the section about Jesus' parables -- these are covered well, but these weren't the sections of the Bible I was most interested in. My favorite sections of the book -- the subjects I was already most curious about -- were the stories between Eden and the later kings, and the stories between the Crucifixion and Revelation. The book has a nice treatment of Revelation and explains its political context. In the middle of the book, the parables and wisdom literature is covered.

I treasure this book and am glad to have read the Bible in this clear and understandable form. Next, I may read the Bible Handbook by DK Publishing (John Bowker). I'm reading Bowker's 2002 book from DK Publishing, God: A Brief History. I've also read the pocket-size Bible handbook from DK Publishing, which isn't very enlightening -- it's a tiny, somewhat random subset of the Illustrated Family Bible. I also recommend the books by DK Publishing, which I have read, covering Christianity, Myth, World Religions, and Philosophy.

Excellent reading and images
This book is great because it gives a very readable overview of the main Biblical stories. The illustrations are a plus and make the stories easy to absorb and remember. The sidebars provide very useful information. There appears to be a high degree of scholarship in the analyses. Of course, because this is a "family" bible, perhaps a few of the more sordid elements may not be covered. Still, this is a wonderful way to get an overall feel for the Old and New Testaments

Awesome Bible Helper!
I love this book! When my husband or I am reading out of our regular bible & don't understand something, this book can usually clarify our questions. We have had such a good time just sitting down in the evening & going over a few pages a night. It's plain, simple English. I have such a hard time understanding our other bibles. I highly reccommend.

Spellbound, not only the children, but the adults as well...
Initially we purchased the"Winnie-The-Pooh and When we were very Young " cassettes for the children to listen to on long car journeys; I vaguely remembered the stories from my own childhood in England and it was a delight to find that the extremely talented Peter Dennis has a wonderful English voice (call me biased but Winnie-The-Pooh is a very British bear!). Peter Dennis totally captures the characters and nuances of A.A. Milne's delightful creatures; we may have bought the tapes for the children but the adults share equal pleasure when listening to them. To anyone who wants to journey back to a time of simple pleasures and pure enchantment I thoroughly recommend "Winnie-The-Pooh and When We Were Very Young" performed by Peter Dennis.

Dennis is dynamite!
BRAVO! Rush out and buy all Mr. Dennis' recordings

Peter Dennis is charming and witty!
Mr. Dennis has a exemplary way of charming young and old alike with his renderings of the works of A.A. Milne. No wonder the U.S. Government considers him a national treasure. Anyone will treasure owning his entire collection.

The House at Pooh Corner & Now We Are Six With Book
This is a wonderful recording of the Pooh tales...Mr. Dennis makes the tales come alive. These are familiar friends and the rendering of this collection is excellent. Mr. Dennis provides all the voices and the stories are read as Mr. Milne wrote them...as stories, for children, to be read aloud.

WORDS CAN DANCE BEFORE YOUR VERY EYES
Peter Dennis does not so much perform the writings of A. A. Milne, as he is possessed by each and every inhabitant of the Hundred Acre Woods. Like a spiritual medium, Mr. Dennis seems to directly channel Pooh and Piglet, Owl and Eeyore, Tigger and Christopher Robin. To hear him conduct his magic on tape, one presupposes that he must have recorded each voice in successive takes, but to see him perform, is to watch a man's entire demeanor change as quickly as the sunshine can burst out from behind a cloud, and to realize, contentedly, that beautifully written words can be lifted straight off the page and can dance before your very eyes, in the hands of a gifted performer.

The real Winnie-the-Pooh has finally stood up.
CLASSIC POOH

The real Winnie-the-Pooh has finally stood up. Kids inundated with movies and merchandise featuring Disney's version of the Bear of Little Brain deserve to be introduced to the real thing: English actor Peter Dennis' telling of A. A. Milne's tales.

Dennis, who lives in Southern California, is the only person granted permission by the Pooh Trustees to perform Milne's stories and poems in the theater, and his one-man show Bother! has won many awards. He's now released a Classic Audio CD Collection of his unabridged, award-winning recordings of Winnie-the-Pooh, The House at Pooh Corner, Now We Are Six and When We Were Very Young. Sailing Instructor's Opinion
I use this book as a handout to my students that range in age from 18 to 70 years old. I like it and they like like it. Easy to understand. Clearly written and well illustrated.

Excellent and clearly written
I have read the book from the library and now I am going to order it. It is very clearly written with good illustrations and diagrams also. The author tends to explain things twice using slightly different vocabulary which makes it easier to understand the concept. For example, when he writes about how to bring your boat to a stop (i.e. broad reach and ease out the sail), he has a diagram and explains it twice.

Very clearly written and to the point.

To Author: you should make an instructional video or video series also

Excellent!
This is a wonderful introduction to the sport. It's a very "user friendly" book with good illustrations and diagrams. Of the many beginner guides to sailing, this is by far one of the best. Highly recommended.

WHO'S WHO IN THE BIBLE
Terrific for quick reference, and very helpful to help anyone who is teaching Bible lessons, etc. I think everyone would find this book a must have. Our young people find the Bible confusing, this will help them also, so many times through out the Bible, names are repeated, or sounds the same. This book really, really goes hand in hand with reading the Bible. Great for all ages, we can never learn enough, no matter how many times we read the Bible, but this book helps explain who we are reading about. I'd rate it 10+. Hope this helps.

Complete and informative
From Aaron to Paul, Adam to Mary, Achan to Judas, Dr. Motyer gives us a great picture of the biblical world, from the temptation and fall to the missionary journeys of Paul, this book is filled with comprehensive information that make you want to read it again and again! A fantastic book!

This one won't gather dust
No mysteries to this title. It does exactly what it says. It explains who's who in a very logical manner. Don't let the number of pages fool ya'...every page is packed with info and illustrations! I especially enjoyed the range of art work used (different mediums, styles). This is NOT your typical reference book. I thought of placing it on the shelf between the dictionary and the encylopedias, but it is used more often than those! It is an instant favorite with the kids. They are facinated with the meanings of the names listed with other interesting facts, such as to whom they are related, where they can be found in the Bible and short paraphrases about their role in the Bible. Lastly I must say that I am glad it is a hard back book because I know it will see a lot of wear.

All ages will enjoy this marvellous performance.
This program exemplifies the potential quality audio has for complementing text. Soothing music introduces and links the stories and verses. Subtle sounds of nature immerse the listener in Pooh's world and provide a backdrop for Peter Dennis's enchanting performance. Dennis's ability to switch characters and moods allows him to accurately portray the range of characters in the stories. These talents shine prominently in the "When We Were Very Young" poems. All ages will enjoy this marvelous performance of Milne's words.

Wonderful recordings. THE BEST.
These recordings of the Pooh stories are the BEST rendition I have ever heard. Peter Dennis' characterization of each character is perfect. The read-a-longs are great for the kids. I am a 50 year old "Classic" Pooh fan. I recommend these to everyone, whatever your age. They are pure joy .

Same great book in fancy package...
"Winnie the Pooh" and "House on Pooh Corner" were two of my favorite books growing up. When I came across this 75th boxed anniversary edition, I just had the get it. Keep in mind, this is just the same great stories in new packages. "Winnie the Pooh" has gold trimmed pages and "House on Pooh Corner" is trimmed with silver. I recommend this to anyone who hopes to pass on the love of the original Winnie the Pooh characters to any young ones in their lives. I know I definitely will.

I love every animal in this book, especially piclet.
I think this book suitable for everyone not only for child but adult also can read it. My friend and I love this book and try to collect the whole of Pooh's series. But I think .. The house at the Pooh corner also lovely while The Tao of Pooh was very difficult to understand for child. However, I love it!!

Sumptuous -- Absolutely Sumptuous!!!
I recieved this book (and its companion, the color edition of "The House At Pooh Corner") as a gift. I cannot speak more highly of them both. Unlike the editor at Horn, who found that the colorization detracted from the illustrations, I find exactly the opposite -- that the color lends depth and detail to the drawings, which are completely untouched otherwise.

The paper is crisp, semi-glossy, and brilliant white; the cover and page edges are guilded; the typeface is sharp and crystal-clear; and the full-color endpapers are truly magnificent.

In all and every way this is a truly magnificent and sumptuous edition -- with perhaps the single exception of price. And even then, with such a marvelous work, that is to be expected!
