book is back in print!
Many people lamented when this book went out of print, but Ten Speed has brought it back in print under a new title, FEASTS AFLOAT. Moreover, it's in paperback, and now cheaper than the hardcover was 10 yrs ago!

We live aboard and really use the book
We live, full-time, on our fifty foot motor yacht, and though it may sound large to some folks, space is a consideration. Our galley is large and does have a full size side by side frig. and a full size Jenn-Air. Despite the large galley, there is a need for using as few pots as possible and not requiring lots of ingredients. We have tried quite a few of the recipes and with an exception or two, all have been great! We recently had a chili shoot-out at our marina and MICHAEL'S PORK AND BLACK BEAN CHILI was the winner by a mile. I had several requests for the recipe and our friends were quite disappointed to find the book out of print. Too bad. Liz and Al Nalven, Longboat Key, FL

Cooking at its best
We've had this book for a couple of years now and are delighted with the simplicity and quality of the recipes. Initially purchased as a gift for sailor friends but their success with the recipes was so great that we purchased one for ourselves. Our friends even won a contest with one of the eggplant recipes. This book NEEDS to be reprinted. We are so sorry we can not offer it as a gift for more of our friends and are very dissapointed about that.

Hopefully the publisher will reconsider.

Awesome!
I met one of the contributors (Micha) and heard him speak. I bought the book from him and read it. It was really great. It talks about the stuff that teens deal with.

This book is absolutly excelent!
If you need a book that deals with stuff that teens are going through, this is the book. It contains solid advice from motivational speakers from around the world. I suggest you read this book.

It gives Chicken Soup for Teens a run for their money.
As a co-author to this book, I must admit I am biased. But, I would not have gotten involved if I did not think this is a book every teen must have. With a collection of youth speakers from across the United States, it is a collection of hilarious and touching stories from a variety of very different authors. This is the original in a series of four and it truly helps teens get the power to do what is positive. If you have any questions, just email me!

Make mine a double, please.
You can be the first in YOUR neighborhood to jump on the Tiki revival with this mouthwatering slim-jim book packed with delicious sounding (and looking) Tiki drinks and nibbly go-withs. The beauty of the recipes is that they are somewhat adapted to modern taste-- not too sweet and using ingredients (like lemongrass) that our Tiki forbears probably never heard of. There are recipes for quick sour mixes, an easy and inteteresting rum glossary, tiki lore (answers just what IS tiki anyways?), great graphics and photos. Also an excellent source list for All Things Tiki. The book is fun without being condescending. Well worth the affordable ticket.

Great calendar!
Okay, I'm the author so I'm going to give it a glowing review. I've written several books about hot sauces, and continue to be entranced by their names (I Am On Fire Ready to Die), their labels (outrageous and challenging the boundaries of politically incorrect) and the fact that they are just fun -- they are funny and make you laugh. Give this to your hot sauce loving friends, or just for yourself, if you need a good laugh. (BTW, I also make the sauce called Jump Up and Kiss Me.)

Mass Moca: From Mill to Museum

MASS MoCA Is a "Platform Rather Than a Box."
Throughout the last 100 or so years, artists, collectors and curators have debated what a museum should be. Unfortunately, most museums are buildings that immediately focus on art as icon. Many contemporary artists want just the opposite. MASS MoCA represents a breakthrough in establishing a new sort of museum. Its purpose is to "mount in-depth quality work that would otherwise remain unseen for lack of properly scaled, appropriately tools facilities." That purpose has also been expanded to include being a location for the performing arts, both outdoors and in a theater.

Located 5 miles from the Williams College museum of art and 35 miles from Tanglewood in North Adams, Massachusetts, MASS MoCA adds an important new element to a major cultural center (especially in the summers).

The story of the museum is also very interesting, having been based in a rundown series of converted mill buildings that had housed manufacturing since 1768. Most recently abandoned by the Sprague Electric Company (who originally took it over from the Arnold Print Works -- makers of printed fabric), the facility covers 13 acres and over 780,000 square feet of building space. Originally, Massachusetts had planned to provide most of the funding. A recession and change in political leadership greatly slowed the progress, and much of the funding eventually came form private donors.

The book has many wonderful elements. The director, Joseph Thompson, has a fine essay explaining the museum's roots and concept. The architect, Simeon Bruner, also weighs in with his thoughts about the design along with drawings of his plans. The pieces de resistance, however, are the wonderful photographs of the site (both before and after) in black and white and color that capture the transformation. These were done by Nicholas Whitman, and started before the museum was planned. He and his father had both worked in the Sprague plant, and he wanted to preserve the memory of the space before it was torn down. There are some stunning side-by-side photographs of before in black and white, with after in color with beautiful art on the walls.

Most of the current photographs were taken during the 1999 grand opening of the museum, which I had the pleasure to attend. The classic piece that defines MASS MoCA during that opening was the display of Robert Rauschenberg's "The 1/4 Mile or 2 Furlong Piece" from 1981, which can only easily be displayed in full in MASS MoCA. There are also nice photographs of Natalie Jeremjenko's "Tree Logic" and James Rosenquist's "The Summer in the Econo-Mist." There are some fine John Chamberlain sculptures as well.

This book is a great resource to have for any contemporary art lover, or someone who is interested in new museum forms. I also recommend it as a working document for a museum still in progress, for most of the development of the MASS MoCA site is still ahead. If you are a museum trustee or are planning a new museum, you should read this book, as well.

I should admit that I collect contemporary art, and love to visit collections of contemporary art. If you share that love, you'll adore MASS MoCA!

Abolish your stalled thinking about what a museum is and should be! Also, be sure to give yourself a treat, and visit MASS MoCA soon. It's well worth a special trip from Boston, New York, or Philadelphia.

An excellent book for those cooking on boats and ....
If you're cooking in a cramped space (boat, travel trailer, mountain cabin or tiny kitchen) and you do not have the time, skills or inclinations [like some people] and want flexibility with menus: buy this book. Thompson & Wheeler have mastered the above and done us all a favor in passing on both their recipes and tips. You can 'create a gracious meal with a minimum of fuss' using Feasts Afloat. Not only are the menus creative and good, they are fast and I use them daily when I am on the run.

The recipes lend themselves to quick preparation. The 'Grilled Ginger Chicken' is a must try and the 'Fresh Lime Pie' was quick and great tasting. Ten Speed Press has done an great job in printing the color photos. This book has so many beautiful photos that it verges on the edge of being a 'coffee table' book, rather than a cookbook. Scores of photos illustrate in vivid color what the finished dish looks like and there are great sailing shots too. The side bars have helpful hints. The cover is made of a strong treated (water resistant) covering.

This is an excellent book for those cooking on boats, and a very good book for those cooking in small kitchen spaces. Recommended 4 1/2stars

Not Just For Boaters
Owning both a sailboat and motorhome, my mother who is a terrible cook (something a son should never admit) recommended Feasts Afoat. I found this book very helpful for both on the water and on the road. Most of the recipes used 6 or less ingredients and required minimal storage. Cooking is one of my hobbies, I would rate this book gourmet quality.

Terrific Cookbook
I have used this book for years as the "Yachting Cookbook" and been one of those who tried to locate additional copies through out-of-print searches and in obscure coastal bookstores so I could give it to friends. I was delighted to find it republished. It is a marvelous book filled with delicious ideas for meals that are uncomplicated masterpieces. My husband likes to tell people that he "single-handed" our 49' sailboat around Vancouver Island with a "splendid cook". The credit for the meals goes to this book. Incidently, if you read Wm Buckley's "Racing Through Paradise", Liz Wheeler was the cook on that voyage and many recipes that are praised in that book are included "Feasts Afloat"

Refreshingly Spicy
For the most part, I really like this book. I get really tired of boring vegetarian recipes, and enjoy that I have a complete array of spicy choices to cook from this book. She combines interesting ingredients that create suprisingly delightful dishes. My only complaint is that some of the receipes are complicated and time consuming to make. My favorite recipe is the Roasted Corn Chipotle Soup...it is incredibly spicy, but so delicious.

Excellent
The meals are great. If you like it spicy, this book has it. Additionally, the range of genres is fantastic. You can do oriental, mexican, italian, etc. Best of all, a great deal of the meals are vegan, not just vegetarian. You don't have to worry about your diet. It's there. The recipes aren't simple, but they're worth it.

Lots of variety
This is a neat book - it has a real variety of recipes, coving lots of different nationalities (although not spelled out per se) and there are all sorts of tid bits of advice in here that discuss things like cheeses, types of noodles, and there are even thought provoking quotes scattered through. Recipes are good - they're a bit more adventurous than I first expected but the combinations are great. I love to experiement so I was quite willing to trust the author and they're really good. I'm not saying it's weird combinations that you'd at first look at and say yuk - I'm just saying they're combinmations I might not have thought of on my own so it's been fun learning new things. I highly recommend it! (and it's not that spicy)

Great For the devout Chileheads
I love the book mainly for the descriptions of the many hot sauces listed, as well as a look at the actual bottles. As a collector, it has helped me save a bit of time looking around the shelves for some of the sauces. The only drawback to this book is that while there is a listing of some of the hot sauce catalogs, there is little information on actually contacting the manufacturers. After scouring several catalogs I still can't find a some of the sauces in the book. Overall, I'd heartily recommend it to other hotheads and fans of the fire.

Lots of Info
This book contains lots of info. about Nuclear Power.

Here are some quotes: With radioactive cobalt, botanists can produce new types of plants. Structural variations that normally take years of selective breeding to develop can be made to occur in a few months.

The radiation has even caused genetic mutations in children whose parents were exposed to the radiation.

Other renewable power sources such as solar and hydroelectric, cannot provide the large scale power generation which is needed.

You get what you pay for...
This is a small reference book, full of names, addresses & contact info for hot sauce vendors. But, don't expect an eye-popper, there's not much more to it than your local yellow pages. I bought this as a stocking stuffer for a hot sauce enthusiast, and wound up not giving it. Based on the photo, I expected a colorful book, full of pictures of hot sauce bottles, chilis, and what-not. There are no pictures, just listings. It has all the excitement of the local phone directory. The paper is newsprint-like, adding to the "yellow pages" tone of the book. It is very small in reality, pocketbook size, and thin. The content is not ~remotely~ exciting as I'd hoped.
But,,, if you're just looking for a small portable directory to find names & addresses for hot saucing, this little ... book could be handy.

A Great Introduction to Hot Sauce
This is a fun book that categories hot sauce by region and gives a heat rating from 1 to 4 chilies. While the flavors and ingredients are included, and the rating system is generally accurate, this book would be more useful if it included a better comparison to well known hot sauces (such as Tabasco) and if the authors included a short list of sauces that would serve as an introduction to various regional hot sauces.

Fabulous book for the beginner or experienced collector
The book is a great starting point for someone who is interested in beginning a collection of hot sauce. There is a lot of information that is useful in helping someone who may not know where to look to start a collection. Some of the information however is out of date. For example I was searching for a particular hot sauce that was listed and the address of where to get it was a man's home address and he did not collect or have any of the hot sauce that he was referred to as having. There are not many of those mistakes and if someone is really looking for a particular sauce there is plenty of information and locations listed within the book to call or email for additional information or to have a brochure sent to you personnally. This book was given to me as a gift and it was how I was started in collecting hot sauce. Because of this book I have met many neat and interesting people as well as visited the sites and activities that are listed within.
