It's about time
This book gave me hope. Well thought out and logical. Great little histories.

A simple but subversive book. Americans need to wake up and smell the coffee and do something about the state of things. I never considered myself to be a radical until this year when it became apparent that Bush and Company were taking away everything that makes this country great piece by piece. Hopefully readers will understand that we actually have to take action to secure our rights and that action doesn't have much to do with bombing the rest of the world into submission.

Fast and inspiring read with great info
Cool inspiring mix-n-match minihistories show the history of American civil disobedience in the book's first half. Some of the stories are personal like the Act-Up activist who becomes a cop, and the college gal who goes undercover to spy on anti-abortion groups; some of them are basic like the Boston Tea Party, labor unions, and civil rights movement.

The second half is a really thorough How-To manual outlining how to organize a direct action and what to expect... getting arrested for political reasons is different than getting busted for something stupid. This book is really an essential tool for new activists.

It also contains the entire USA-Patriot Act which is really something to think about...

Altogether a great, cheap resource for people who are interested in getting involved and want to learn more.

Great overview of church history.
I found this book to be an engaging and interesting overview of events that constitute the roots of today's protestant "church". It provided me with a framework from which much "church" history can be understood. It includes Apostle Paul, papal history, Anabaptists and relationships between protestant denominations. Although lightweight in many areas, it covers a wide range of church history, which makes it very readable. Many topics may not go into as much depth as you like but there is enough to identify interest. This lack of depth is what makes the book so readable, never becoming bogged down in uninteresting topics, it keeps moving while providing stepping stones for additional reading.

What I did not like about the book is its tendency to deviate from a mostly chronological presentation. I found this was particularly annoying in the first several chapters. Later, I got use to it. There are "Protestant Pearls" (quotes) thrown throughout the book. Literally, they seem to have been thrown, having no relationship to the text. I think they should have been presented in the context of the relevant text. I would liken it to getting blips within a documentary movie have no bearing on the current scene. I found them distracting, breaking the flow so to speak. I adjusted by reading the "pearls" separately or when reviewing previously read text.

Another great book from Jim Bell
If you liked Complete Idiot's Guide to The Bible, then you'll like this one. I've known Jim Bell from his well-known Christian books, so I'm glad to see the Idiot's people have picked up one of the best for their religion books. He really breaks down what Protestants believe and why in an easy to understand way that doesn't make you feel stupid. I'm going to use this in my Bible class over the summer.

Great sourcebook! Tremendously useful.
This book is well-written and covers a vast scope. Contrary to what the title might lead you to believe, this book covers a lot more than just plain mediums. In fact, it offeres detailed information on just about any faction in the Skinlands that might interact with the Restless Dead: "Boardwalk mediums" found at carnivals and circuses the ruthless Giovanni vampires, even charlatans and frauds who possess no real talent, but manage to offend wraiths with their very presumption and chicanery.

This book is definitely worth the purchase price- it will enrich virtually any Wraith chronicle.

Mediums done right
This is a fine resource for mediums, much better than the Quick and the Dead. The systems stuff is vastly improved, with a battery of new merits and flaws for mediums that I actually found useful (and can be used to supplement or replace the hedge magic paths for interacting with wraiths). There is some good stuff on summoning, a large section on Native American medicine men and shamanic dealings with the dead, a fresh look at many of the old ghost-dealing groups, and a new ability for those people who have had enough with wraiths shouting in their ears.

Essential '60s Text
This extensively researched book shows the birth of a new breed of passive resistance in this country, in front of the backdrop of the 1960s and earlier. An essential text for anyone interested in the 1960s. (Also a great research paper resource . . .)

Erasmus of the Low Countries
Published in Hardcover by University of California Press (1998)
Author: James D. Tracy
Amazon base price: $50.00
Average review score:

Informative, Scholarly Book
A book written by a man who has become very well aquainted with the subject matter. He allows the facts to present the subject with little fanfare or extra fluff. The bad is presented along with the good, and with praise when praise is warranted, and with no apologies when other authors have made excuses. All within the context of the times.

Erasmus of the Low Countries
This book is excellent for gaining a cursory understanding of Erasmus, some of his works ,and various elements that helped him develop his ideas. Tracy has done a good job of trying to walk the middle ground and has done an admirable job of laying the details down without trying to interpret them too much. An excellent starting point for those who wish to study Erasmus.

The Nonprofit Handbook: Fund Raising: 1999 Supplement
Published in Paperback by John Wiley & Sons (1999)
Authors: Tracy Daniel Connors and James M. Greenfield
Amazon base price: $72.00

It isn't just a book; it's a fund raising curriculum . . . .
One of the most experienced and respected fund-raising professionals in the United States, James M. Greenfield, ACFRE, FAHP, has assembled the best wisdom 42 other highly-regarded and experienced fund-raising leaders, into a comprehensive handbook covering nearly every conceivable aspect of fund development.   The Nonprofit Handbook:  Fund Raising isn't just a book; it's a fund raising curriculum between two covers.  Indeed, I am unaware of any other volume which attempts -- and successfully so, I might add -- to map the entire scope of fund raising so thoroughly.  A warning, though:  It would be a monumental task to read this book in its entirety.  Rather, its best use is as a fund raising reference - a one-volume library for articles covering just about any topic fund development professionals are likely to encounter.   For example, folks who are involved with an annual fund will want to focus on Part III, entitled "Annual Giving Program." The section contains articles on "Overview of Annual Giving," "Direct Mail," "Benefit Event Fundamentals," "Benefit Event Enhancements," Telemarketing," and "Volunteer-Led Solicitations."   To take another example, folks looking for major donors will turn to Part IV, entitled "Major Giving Programs," containing thorough treatments on these topics:  "Overview of Major Giving," "The Corporate Support Marketplace," "The Grant-Seeking Process," "Major Gifts from Individuals," "Capital Fund Appeals," "Planned giving:  Gift Vehicles," and "Planned Giving:  Management and Marketing."   One drawback is its price.  At $210, it's one of the pricier books in fund raising.  However, this is a two-volume set.  I've described only the "Fund Raising" volume; there is also Management volume, covering -- again, in encyclopedic fashion -- all aspects of nonprofit management.  We'll be reviewing that in the next installment of "We Review."  Despite the price of the set, I cannot imagine any well-equipped fund development department not having these volumes available to the staff.

Math Bridge Grade 5
Math Bridge 5th Grade is in its second printing. DO NOT WASTE your money on this $10.00 book. You go to the first page of problems (page 5) and look at problem #14.

"Choose the decimal for 91/2 (Nine and a half)." ANSWER: 9.12 WRONG! Answer should be 9.5. This is an example of the book. Poor review and editing. Should have been caught in the first printing and corrected in the second.

Math Bridge, Grades 5-8
I am a middle school math teacher who found these books to be very helpful. I am always on the lookout for workbooks that provide extra help on basic skills. These books fit the bill. Some answers are incorrect, but the majority can be checked with a calculator. These books provide good reteaching concepts as well as a good variety of sample problems. If you are looking to help your child in math, I would suggest these books.

Math Bridge
I LOVE this series. It has been useful as reteach pages as well as make-up work assignments for absent students. The top of the page teaches the skill and there are plenty of practice problems without overwhelming the student.
