A Place Called Heatbreak
'A Place Called Heartbreak' is a fairly good book.I would recommend this book to anyone that wants to know about the Vietnam War. I gave the book three stars. My favorite part was when Fred Cherry was finally let out of prison. He was an airforce pilot for the USA. He was captured when his plane was shot down by a North Vietnamese soldier. While he was in prison he taught the other prisoners "tap." Soldiers had to learn a tap code to communicate with other prisoners in different cells. That was pretty cool. This book was okay. Try it.--Baseball Stud

Engrossed!
Engrossed is the only possible description for my boys when reading this book. The chapters are short enough to keep a reluctant reader going, the black & white illustrations add to the story. Myers' historic notes at the end add value to a well disguised history lesson. My boys are ages 13 and 12.

Forty Years of Scotland Yard: The Record of a Lifetime's Service in the Criminal Investigation Department
Published in Textbook Binding by Greenwood Publishing Group (1931)
Author: Frederick Porter Wensley
Amazon base price: $15.00
Average review score:

Old School Law Enforcement
Frederick P. Wensley's account of a lifetime in law enforcement spans the age from Jack the Ripper to pre-World War II England. The book was written in 1931. It is a superb, laconic record of famous cases and vivid memories, a true memoir, written without resort to intricate detail or self-imposed research.
Wensley entered police service as a "rookie cop", getting beat up by London toughs and gaining his experience through time, trial and error. He became a master of his territory, knowing his jurisdiction by wrote and memory and relying on the same life-long experience of his colleagues.
Inspirational pages include the loss of Wensley's two sons in World War I, the youngest contracting influenze from which he died, on the day the Armistice was signed.
This is wonderful history, written without exaggeration or spleen against the criminals Wensley apprehended. Case in point, this good-will note from a felon, "Dear Mr. W., I feel I must join with all other criminals and old lags in sincerely wishing you years of happiness and a complete rest."
Those were the days.

The Irish Brigade: And Its Campaigns (Irish in the Civil War, No. 4)
Published in Hardcover by Fordham University Press (1998)
Authors: Lawrence Frederick Kohl, David Porter Conyngham, D. P. Conygham, and David Power Conyngham
Amazon base price: $24.50
List price: $35.00 (that's 30% off!)

Boring.
Lawrence Kohl's introduction to this book features the same tedious style that marked his history of the age of Jackson. Avoid this tome like the plague.

A Good introduction into the Irish Brigade
Capt. Conyngham has done a fine job in detailing the history, and little known parts, of the famous Union Irish Brigade. While he does tend to lend a little favoritism to the Brigade and hushes the intent of the Brigade to serve as a pool for soldiers to help liberate Ireland from English rule after the Civil War, it is still a great book and a wonderful addition to anyone's collection of War reference material.
