A beautiful book!
I really love this book ~ it is perfectly illustrated for children.

Nicely detailed illustrations introduce our National Anthem
Peter Spier is one of my favorite illustrators of children's books. Here, his illustrations for three verses of Francis Scott Key's poem and song, "The Star-Spangled Banner," provide an excellent introduction for children to the meaning behind his famous lyrics.

I usually read this aloud to primary classes around a patriotic holidays. This year, because of our late school year, I read it for Flag Day. Since the words and historical setting are unfamiliar to most younger students, I have begun introducing this book with "The Story of 'The Star Spangled Banner,'" which can be found in "The Children's Book of America," edited by William J. Bennett. These two volumes make fine companions.

Even with this introduction, Key's text needs explaining, however with Spier's finely detailed illustrations, this task is much easier. Children love to examine the intricacies and they usually come up with some excellent comments and questions. On the page featuring Arlington National Cemetery, they ask about who died in battle, why some of the grave markers are stars instead of crosses, and why the flag is flying at half-mast.

Our copy of "The Star-Spangled Banner" is nearly worn out from heavy use. That should say something about the popularity of this excellent patriotic book.

A book to inspire young patriots,
our four-year-old claims this is his FAVORITE book. Perhaps it is because his mother chokes up and tears drop to her cheeks as she reads this book. We have found that this is an excellent read-aloud and has stretched our four-year-old's language skills in many ways. As if The Star Spangled Banner weren't moving enough, the arrangement of pictures flows along with the words of the song to create an image of heroics and bravery. In addition, little incidentals like soldiers feeding their horses and wet clothes hanging to dry aboard ship cause us to remember that these were real people fighting. Peter Spier mixes history with the present as he causes us to remember what these men were fighting for. We see schools and businesses, Arlington Cemetery and the Statue of Liberty, cities and rural farms, synagogues and churches, Amish buggies and a Friends Meeting House all as evidence of our cultural diversity. We also see that the fight continues as we witness a renovation project and scientists working in a lab. The first, second and fourth verses are illustrated. The pictures help the capable parent define words such as "conceals" and "discloses." In addition, the artwork contains so much information and story that conversation just develops as the book is read. There is an oustanding collection of Flags of America and a thorough history of the War of 1812. The words to all four verses of the Star Spangled Banner and the music by J Stafford Smith follow. Peter Spier is becoming our hero as the author of our favorite children's books.

Great for kids!
I wanted to just "read" the book to the kids. But gosh, I started singing it. And did they love it. I sang and flipped pages as fast as I could. Over and over. I teach preschool and this was America week. This was pretty much the only book about America their "level." It has beautiful "impressionistic" painitings of all sorts of beautiful and significant places in America that you can talk about. And if you are proud and interested, the kids will be too. We sit on a map rug so the kids are getting familiar with all our landmarks. But this book helps learn the song and gets them familiar with our nation. The last page has a picture of the Statue of Liberty in the harbor, "from sea to shining sea." I felt so good to read this to the kids. Please get this to make not only children feel good about where they come from, but also you as well!

It has wondeful illustrations.
The book has good illustrations and it has the song five times. The illustrations go very nicely with the words to the song.

Must Buy--Excellent short Read
This book accurately depicts adolescent participation in major Soviet historical turning points.

A lot of big words, I think the author is a pompous professor type, but it is a wonderful piece of work.

ESSENTIAL READING FOR USSR HISTORIANS
Ann Todd Baum provides an important insight into the role of the Communist youth organization and its part in shaping the early Soviet state, a period of history that has been largely neglected by historians and researchers alike until now. This book shows how the grass roots efforts of the Komsomol was an essential part of the implimentation of the First Five Year Plan and as a result the future course of the USSR. A very interesting read.

All you expect, and a lot you didn't
I've always enjoyed AM's performances whenever I come across them, but I wouldn't consider myself a fan. That's why I'm surprised to be rating this autobiography with 4 stars. I wanted to get the dish on Elvis, and yes, it's here. But there's more, too. She's refreshingly honest about the duality of her nature -- the onstage strumpet who can (to borrow a phrase) start a heat wave by letting her seat wave coexists with the "good girl" who brought friends with her on dates so she wouldn't have to be alone with a man before she was ready; the dutiful daughter who couldn't bear to disappoint her parents coexists with the reckless woman who truthfully, regretfully admits to having ended marital arguments by roaring off on her Harley with a good deal of alcohol in her system. It must be hard for her to live her life with, as she refers to it, "the two Ann-Margrets." I found that, and her enduring love story with Roger, to be the best and most surprising aspects of the book.

A great book by Ann-Margret!
Ann-Margret showed a lot of class in the writing of this book and I just know she is a great person. This book is very discreet - not a tell-all like SOME people.Very informative about her life. For the record,I think Ann-Margret and Elvis should have stayed together, they made a lovely couple!

Ann-Margret reveals her true self
Ann-Margret is one of the most private Hollywood Legends ever...her candid tale is so riveting and just terrific, it's not to be passed up! She is truly a legend and always will be...you will respect her even more after reading this.

this poetry will probably get me laid
this collection of poems really covers the bases.. if you dont write poetry you can merely substititute one of these poems for use in romantic situations... coming from three different people they have managed to meld the poems together into a common yet individual theme. this roxy chick must be a hellbitch, she probably gets backstage at all the rock shows... my only complaint is the lack of pornographic pictures to go along with the poems.

Good Collection
This book gives you a good look at the work of three lively poets whose poems catch the basic rhythms of the street. This will especially appeal to those who enjoy live readings, as the voices here are bold and engaged rather than locked inside their minds. Cirillo's work in particular interests me, especially when he stretches out and mixes humor, narrative and reflection. There is a bit of the heart-broken romantic peeking out from his poems, and he is sly enough to know it and not fall prey to sloppy emotionalism or cliche. Buy this collection and have a Dabba-Do time! I did. JC

Simple, yet profound
It's amazing how three diverse men can articulate so simply, yet profoundly, universal experiences. Their poetry grabs you and thrusts you back into a time of your own past- to relive an intensely real moment, if only for the time it takes you to peruse a few dynamic lines. Although I have little background reading poetry other than Dr. Seuss, I've experienced my own "Love stories and Train Wrecks" (Gainer), have felt like giving up if in store for me is "One More Heartbreak to go" (Staple), and am at the age of 25 "Waiting for Greatness" (Cirillo).

Great book "Suport Site Down"
This is a real good book. The site is down so there are no examples to download. and the book has no cd.
It took longer to read and type all the work from scratch.

Terrific For Beginners!
I purchased this Stauffer book in 1996 having absolutely no HTML knowledge whatsoever; the next night, I had a fairly nice webpage up-and-running on one of these free servers that are available. HTML By Example is incredibly easy to read and follow along, and though the book ends quite abruptly with an overview on more advanced web design, it contains enough information to make one fully comfortable with intermediate HTML.

I could not make a living without this book.
I create web sites for a living. While this is a beginner/intermediate book, it has a number of very useful tips in it and it's much easier to scan for information than many other books I own. I also like the fact that Ann stresses browser compatibility in her HTML code. I often use this book when I need to find code that works in both Netscape and IE.
