Behind The Legend
As did most people who develop a fascination with Johnson, I "caught the bug" from the Robert Redford movie. It was not until some time later, however, when I inadvertantly vacationed in areas in which many of the events actually occurred, that I sought out the information on the "real" Jeremiah Johnson and found the book. I have read it cover-to-cover more times than I can count.

It depicts a coarse, violent life in terms uniquely appropriate to the stories it relates, and does a remarkable job at documenting what little can be documented of a life lived far beyond the bounds of places where such documentation even existed -- much less, mattered. The starkness with which the author relates his information does much more to convey what the real Johnson's life was like than a more esthetically-pleasing and smoothly literary version ever could.

Finishing the book leaves one wishing there was more -- wondering, for example, what could make a man such as Johnson seek out such a life, and wishing it were possible to read all of the actual research to which Thorp so frequently refers.

Not larger than life, but as large as life was at the time
Possibly the best fur era book I have read. John Johnson is what the free trapper really was. If you are ready to get away from the "fantasy land" of the historical novelist, and immerse yourself in what was, this book by Thorp will bring you there. Open the book, keep your powder dry and watch your topknot. If I don't see you at the grave on Sepulveda (Big Anton's name) then I'll see you on the trail.

Great Book and easy read
Just finished reading CROW KILLER: The Saga of Liver-Eating Johnson. I recommend this book for a number of reasons. #1. its a very quick & easy read, around 200 pages. #2. Great story with lots of documentation. #3. the real story of "Jeremiah Johnson" and the real truth about mountain men. They were not loners, they were very seldom off by themselves and these men were the best of friends for the most part. I've been into the BP scene for about 5 years and still stand in awe of these men who braved the West, the Indians, and the pure hardships of the weather not because they had a love affair with BP or the genre but because that was who they were ... Mountain Men. I truly onder how long I or we would last under the onditions which they encountered everyday. I venture a guess, at least for me, not very long. These men were a very special group that was in reality very small in number.

Academic approach to paradoxes: scant advice for management.
This academic book describes a number of apparent paradoxes in business that will be familiar to managers from junior supervisors upwards.

It adopts an unashamedly academic approach to analysing these problems, and uses many charts and diagrams that will almost certainly catch on with management consultants in coming years. A good example is the chart that exaplains IT investment in terms of a matrix composed of Linkage, Reach, People and Time. This chart is interesting and has some relevance to problems in major academic research organisations and helth and safety organisations.

Highly Recommended!
John Thorp's book recalls Mark Twain's definition of a classic as "a book you want to have read but don't want to read." If you're an executive with control over your company's information technology purse stings, you probably don't want to read a book this detailed in the intricacies of IT, which is exactly the reason that you should. Thorp's initial premise is that many IT investments never pan out in part because the people that are signing off on them have absolutely no idea what to expect. This book will give you a clue, but don't expect to enjoy it. It's dense with IT terminology, change and program management strategies and valuation techniques. We [...] recommend this book to all of you professionals who know that you need a better understanding of information technology, even if you won't admit it. Don't put off reading this book, no matter how much you'd like to.

Excellent synthesis of ideas on getting value back from IT
Well-structured well-written thought-provoking book. Good mix of theoretical and case-study materials. Clearly introduces useful models and analytical methods. Applies the balanced scorecard approach to IT value measurement, linked with an emphasis on sound programme management/control to constrain IT costs. The bottom line: a darn good read!
