Unlock the mysteries of successful communication
The man behind this book, Peter Thomson, really uses all the techniques mentioned in this book. I know because I've been lucky enough to meet him. He is a big, tall man who people quickly warm to because of his inherent 'presence'. He naturally has a commanding air about him, which lends itself very well to his profession of speaking at seminars. Peter is very adept at knowing when to pause, when to speak and what to say to provoke 'active' thought and 'active listening'. He's also very tuned in to his audience, and can turn around a topical answer on the spot.

This book is a very comprehensive and gives fully explained examples of how to use the many different communication techniques available to all of us. It's true to say that the methods and ideas in the book are not so much secrets, as mysteries to most people. And that's why until they are fully explained and broken down into chunks of information, with such clarity and insight by the author, it is normally challenging to comprehend many of them.

I think beginners would probably feel more confident reading one chapter at a time and practising some of the techniques before using them 'live'. The more competent communicators amongst you would certainly have no problems using the methods 'live' first time. It is an unequivocal fact that everyone can certainly learn something new. You will also find it very useful to re-visit the book, time after time, especially as your confidence grows. You will come up with new thoughts and new ideas to try out. After all, Peter has been doing this for over twenty years and he still manages to keep his ideas fresh and up to date!

Professional among professionals
We tend to think of Shakespeare as the finished product he is today, the plays we see on stage with their costumes and trappings and the world's best actors, or those aspirants in High School tripping over light cables behind the scenery. He had a beginning, though, and like everyone who survived to adulthood in his age, he worked for a living. Reading this book you can imagine him trotting on stage for his part in a play, getting called up during a rehearsal to recast some lines one of the other actors found uncongenial. Rather like Beetle in Stalky and Co., only more solid somehow. It is a splendid book and illustrates the man and his age with the effortlessness of good scholarship. It is too short, but for those who really want to know what things were like around Shakespeare in his own day, get this book. Imagine Shakespeare helping to lug the giant timbers of a large building across the frozen Thames to build the Globe. Back then as now, Theatre people did what had to be done for the show to go on.

Imagining Dream Rounds and Reliving Great Golf Shots!
Summary: This 5th edition of The World Atlas of Golf belongs in the library of every golfer who wants to appreciate more of the game's rich history . . . and have a Walter Mittyish look at courses that will probably never be seen in person. Over 70 courses get the deluxe treatment of looking at the course layout, the score card, and an in-depth evaluation of the most famous holes. Thorough essays recount the history of the course, including the most memorable golf moments there. Beautiful color photographs capture the holes, and famous historic shots share the winning and losing. Afficionados will appreciate the pin-point descriptions of how to play the world's most demanding holes. The book also boasts a brief gazetteer of over 100 courses providing a one-third page thumbnail sketch of their layout and history. The book also boasts excellent, brief essays on the development of golf course design.

Review: This book will appeal to those who have played these wonderful courses and want to relive the experience, those who wish to know more about the rich history of the world's most challenging holes, and those who are curious about why golfers everywhere rave about certain holes and courses. The material is so rich and detailed that any golf fan could happily spend days with this book and just scratch its surface. A fan could easily extend enjoyment of the book by getting videos of famous championships to see the live action that is captured here in photographs and essays.

The courses are selected from around the world, but are primarily from Europe and the United States. Reflecting the game's heritage, the courses examined start with those in Scotland and proceed from there throughout the British Isles and Eire. From there, you transfer to the European mainland. Next, you go the North America. Asia, Africa, and South America are your final stops.

Naturally, the courses include such standards as St. Andrews's Old Course, Royal Troon, Carnoustie, Royal Dornoch, Muirfield, Turnberry, Loch Lomond, Royal Liverpool, Royal Birkdale, Ballybunion, Valderrama, Shinnecock Hills, Augusta National, Cypress Point, Pebble Beach, Oakmont, Baltusrol, The Country Club, Olympic, Winged Foot, Pinehurst No. 2, Seminole, Merion, Pine Valley, Medinah, Oakland Hills, Dorado Beach and the Mid Ocean in Bermuda. But you will also get exposed to courses that you may not know as well like Sotogrande in Spain and Banff in Canada.

As an example of the hole-by-hole analysis, the book early on looks at the famous 17th on the Old Course at St. Andrews. A hotel cuts off the right side of the hole of this tough par four, also referred to as the Road Hole. In 1995, John Daly won the British Open there in part by hitting a tremendous drive around the hotel and into the fairway. He was able to hit onto the green from there with a 7 iron. The book shows the outline of the hotel, where Daly's ball went, and where most players shoot. Naturally, this looks easy on paper. When I tried the same thing with my drive, my ball went just a bit too far right and disappeared into an area near the foundation of the hotel, out of bounds. I came away much more impressed with Daly's feat.

With the knowledge this atlas can give you, you will find yourself able to take on challenges that great golfers have lived up to before you. You may not match them (and probably won't), but you will enjoy the feeling of trying on the challenging swings of the greats. It'll be a great thrill when you do!

After you finish enjoying this book a few times, think about where else in life you would enjoy reliving great moments of those who have gone before. How can you use those experiences to inspire you to try more, accomplish more, and have more fulfillment in everything you do?

"Take dead aim."

Wanting to Be Heard
This superb new book is a much-needed wake-up call. The authors remind us that there are innocent, vulnerable children behind the symptoms of ADHD. Millions of children are yearning to be heard, acknowledged and loved unconditionally. This is a must-read for anyone who cares about the plight of children today.

Cries Heard
"It is more important to know what kind of a man has a disease than to know what kind of a disease a man has." - was given to us by Sir William Osler in 1871.

The current exponential rise in prescribing rates of stimulant medication for children is both concerning and difficult to justify.

In 2002, Halasz et.al. give us a careful and yet concise consideration of children with problems associated with attention and activity. "Cries Unheard" greatly assists us to re-cognise and re-consider Osler's truth, especially in relation to vulnerable children and childhood "illness/disease". Thank you to the authors!

a must for parents
a must read for all concerned parents and teachers

Brecht's Alienation
The book is a good guide on tracing the evolution of the notion of alienation in theater. A different route from the naturalistic theater tradition, alienation aims at "extracting" emotions in theater and sticking with the message and aim of a play. Peter Thompson's work indirectly traces the idea of showing that acting is just plain "acting". He does this by reviewing the various experiences of staging Brecht's classic "Mother Courage and Her Children". For actors dreaming to just plainly "act" in theater (acting a character and not being a character), the good is a good guide. For those dreaming to be the mother in Mother Courage and The Mother, Shente in The Good Person of Setzuan, and St. Joan in St. Joan of the Stockyards--learn from this book.

The proof of the pudding is in the reading.
The problem with delivering Brecht to an English student audience is the fact that he is such a man of his time, culturally and historically, that the first few lectures end up being as much about 'Sturm und Drang', the Weimer republic and the rise of fascism, as they do about any theory by our Bertie. This wonderfully concise and pragmatic guide has been a real find. Dealing with the magor Brechtian themes and theories in a way that applies them both practically and with due reference to their historical/cultural significance. A real 'must buy' for students and teachers of drama!

The kind of book a food chemist would create
Obscure ingredients, and odd mixtures could characterise this book. Although the recipes are definately gluten free, they are complicated. Three or four different types of flour are used in many of the recipes, and include bean flour, soya flour, cornflour, teff flour....etc. If you are used to the usual rice, tapioca and potato flours, then this book is not for you. Also, ingredients have to be weighed instead of measured, which is very time consuming. I by far preferred "Special Diet Solutions" by Carol Fenster. It is far more practical.

This book saved my life
I never cooked for myself before, but this book told me exactly what to do. Now I'm enjoying my food again. My meals had gotten much the same, but now I'm trying all the different things and putting weight back on.
