Great for Pure Scholarship
I used this book for the purposes of a senior thesis: Thomson's scholarship is thorough, and this provides a fairly good starting point for anyone attempting serious scholarship on missionary-Chinese collaborations, particularly for that 'quiescent' period between 1928-1937. The book isn't the most thrilling to read but I found it an absolute necessity for my own scholarship.
