BRILLIANT BOOK; DO NOT LISTEN TO KIRKUS
I must agree with the other reader who insisted you ignore the Kirkus review. I found this book to be incredibly moving and fascinating in its exploration, not of various conspiracy theories (as the Kirkus reviewer wrongly says), but of the different ways the Kennedy assasination myth affects Americans, even those of us who were not alive when it happened.

Forget the stupid Kirkus review
As far as I'm concerned, who ever wrote the Kirkus review above is even more of a hack than the worst potboiler scribblers, of which Mr. Thomas is definitely not one. Come to think of it, who else but the lowliest hack would review for Kirkus? Forget the dumb, ad hominem Kirkus attack and read the book. It's well worth your time.

A book you can read over and over again.
This book was recommended by my highschool psychology teacher. I have read it many times since then which was ten years ago. The story is fascinating and thrilling. It follows the lives of three men from highschool to adulthood and how they are living with their terrible secret which comes back to haunt them. A must read!

Saga of three men tied together by a terrible secret
My copy of Celebrity is dog eared and torn...I've read it at least 5 times. Celebrity is the story of three men who rise to fame in three very different ways. Although all three followed their own paths after high school, they were tied together by a terrible secret which haunts all three of them for the rest of their lives...It sounds cliched but it isn't. I highly recommend Celebrity.

DRUGS WILL KILL YOU
George Richard "Richie" Diener was born in 1954 during the height of the baby boom. He is the picture of middle class. His father, George, Sr. is a spice salesman and mother is a homemaker. Richie and his little brother Russell are the poster boys for Nassau County, N. Y. suburbia.

Life unravels during the summer of 1969 when Richie, then 15, steals a bike and starts smoking pot. He begins associating with the drug takers and thugs and his relationships with his parents deteriorate to animosity. Bored by school, Richie scraps his dream of becoming a herpetologist. He is transformed from a boy who loved and collected every stray animal he saw into a sullen drug addict.

In February of 1972 matters reach a head when Richie threatens both parents after he totals their 1966 Buick LeSabre. George defends himself and his wife by shooting Richie to death. This is a very tragic story of how drugs will ultimately kill relationships, kill abilities and kill people.

This book is an eye opener..a wake-up call for parents today
My 8-9th grade English teacher picked this book out of our schools library for me to read and do a report on. I read the book in one sitting..it was that riveting! It held my attention and kept me looking for the answers and also asking questions. I am hoping to find a copy of it for my own teenagers to read.

A great guide to the Northwest
As a resident of Washington state who enjoys the natural beauty of the area, I found this book to be a most helpful and inspiring guide. The authors are knowledgable about the natural history of the region, and the text is accompanied by many beautiful photographs. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone planning to visit the area for the first time, or to residents of the Northwest who want to learn more about the natural bounty that their region has to offer.

The best guide to natural areas in the Northwest
As a resident of Washington state who loves the natural beauty of the region, I've found this to be the most helpful, informative and nicely illustrated guide to the natural areas of Washington and Oregon. The book is well written, with beautiful photographs, and has not only inspired me to visit a lot of new places but has enriched my experience of those places I was already familiar with. I'd highly recommend this book to anyone planning on visiting the Northwest --- and especially to those already living here!

The Agrarian Roots of Pragmatism (Vanderbilt Library of American Philosophy)
Published in Hardcover by Vanderbilt Univ Pr (2000)
Authors: Paul B. Thompson and Thomas C. Hilde
Amazon base price: $39.95
Average review score:

A great contribution to pragmatist and agrarianist thought
The Agrarian Roots of Pragmatism gathers some of the best minds in American philosophy around a single theme: the relationship between pragmatism and agrarianism. The first half provides an excellent introduction to agrarian thought, its history, and its contemporary (and possibly future) relevance. The second, assuming a greater familiarity with the pragmatic tradition, limns the relationship between agrarian philosophy and pragmatism, often using one to advance or bring criticism to bear on the other. The result is remarkable, for the reader not only puts down this book with a better understanding of the roots of pragmatism and its historically contingent relation to agrarianism, but also with an exciting sense of how both of these traditions may be developed in the future. Those unfamiliar with pragmatism and agrarianism get a great introduction; those who already think of themselves as pragmatists, like myself, will find much they didn't know.

The Art of John Biggers: View from the Upper Room

a beautiful volume on one of this country's finest painters
John Biggers came to artistic maturity in an academic setting far from the art centers of New York. He was repulsed by the New York art scene that had so summarily dismissed black art when he had participated in a MOMA black student art exhibit. Perhaps his avoidance of the centers of art commerce were as responsible for the late acceptance of his genius as was the segregationist mindset in the United States during Biggers's early career. As well as producing important paintings, drawings, and sculpture, Biggers is one of this country's most important muralists, creating more than twenty major murals in fifty years. His life has been dramatic in both content and context. Wardlaw draws a clear portrait of African-American life in the black section of a sharply segregated Gastonia, North Carolina, where Biggers grew up in the 1930s, and the rich family and community life of rural black America of the time. The other essays, written by noted scholars, trace the history of Biggers's artistic career through a careful study and analysis of his body of work.

Best book I have read for children of divorced parents
The authors shared the real life emotions that young children feel when they have to deal with the divorce of their parents. This book is a workbook for a young child, to be read and talked about with a caring adult. The story of Kristen, the cat, was skillfully written to help children feel understood, how to handle new members of the family that might come, and how to not be the "messenger" for each parent. It inspired me. It gave me hope that I can help them feel "whole" again. It is the book that I will choose as a gift for adults who want to help young children understand and talk about what they are experiencing.

Early Fur Trade on the Northern Plains: Canadian Traders Among the Mandan and Hidatsa Indians, 1738-1818

Excellent
This is a well written and engaging look into the importance of the Mandan and Hidatsa Indian villages as a pivotal point in trade systems during the late 1700's through early 1800's. Being located along the Missouri River in present day North Dakota, the Mandan/Hidatsa Indians traded horses, robes and furs to Canadian Fur Companies in return for guns and ammunition. They would then trade these goods for other commodities from various Northern Plains Indian Tribes, who previously may have traded with other tribes or the Spaniards further south. In part one, the authors give a lengthy but excellent and relevant chronological introduction as to the fur trade history of this geographical area. Part two includes five journals (or excerpts) of some of these Northwest Fur Company traders' first hand accounts depicting life as it was: John Macdonell's descriptions of the Indians, geography and trade in the 1790's; David Thompson's narrative describing his harrowing 1797 journey from Fort Assiniboine to the Mandan villages in the dead of winter; Larocque's two narratives, the "Missouri (1804)" and "Yellowstone (1805)" Journals, the latter of which, in the company with Crow Indians, he may possibly have been the first white man to descend the Yellowstone River, pre-dating William Clark by more than a year. The final narrative is of Charles McKenzie's four journeys to the Mandan villages (1804-1806), the first two in company with Larocque's expeditions. This is a fascinating read for fur trade enthusiasts and/or those whose interests are in early western exploration.

It helps you understand the importance of forgiveness.
It is one of the best that I have ever read. I never really had a problem with forgiveness. However, as I began to reevaluate my life, I found that there were persons that when I thought of them, the memories were not a memory of forgiveness. I had to revaluate and ask forgiveness for a number of persons. I have shared this book with a number of persons and we are hoping to use this book as a guide for our Summer quarter's Sunday School study. The real key is to love again. It is a consolation to know that it is possible.
