Great Book
This book is very well made. It was not exactly what I expected but I was not disapointed. I was hoping for more piercing pictures or scarification or suspension but all in all it is still fun to look at. I think if you are into bondage it is a good book for you. I myself am not but I still found the pictures inspiring.

Awesome in the true meaning of the word
Spirit + Flesh - Anyone who picks up a copy of this remarkable book to admire the photographs should first read the tender forward written by Mark Thompson. The forward is a guide to understanding the story behind the beautiful, artistic photographs taken by Fakir over many years. Some people may find them disturbing or shocking, but there is more to the photographs than images of body modification, visual beauty, and our own perceptions of pain that might have been endured to reach the altered states represented in some of the photos. Leafing through the book and studying the stunning photographs, a story of a remarkable and unique man emerges. This is a book to linger over and share with friends whom understand what it is like to be "different". I am very pleased I added this book to my library.

Libidomag.com review by Jack Hafferkamp
...Fakir Musafar's personal transformation from nerdy teenager to seeker of transcendental sublimity is measurable in this collection from brave little Arena Editions. With knots, corsets, tattoos, piercings, suspensions and body modification tools not easily describable, Farkir goes where few dare.

Be forewarned, this book, beautifully designed and realized as it is, is disturbing. If you think Robert Mapplethorpe went too far, this is probably not for you. The images we run here in the Libido Review Gallery are on the cuddly end. Others in the book make me wince no matter how often I see them.

Not all of the images in this book are of Fakir, but most are. And this is as it should be, because it is clear that Fakir is the centerpiece of his own universe, in which the TV idea of the makeover is taken to an extreme hard to imagine without seeing it.

After the initial shock wears off, one can't help but wonder why, one would want to poke very large nails into one's self or hang one's body from giant hooks like so much cattle carcass. Why would one do this to one's self.

The answer is found both in the photos and Mark Thompson's excellent introduction. For me the question turn on the point at which performance art becomes a public spiritural quest. For Fakir, pain is a portal to the divine; he has turned himself into a "technician of the sacred," using his own body much the same way flagellants from a variety of religions use pain to seek the divine.

The only difference is that Farkir has documented his experiments with a photographic artists's eye.

Mark Thompson does a fantastic job
Charles Lummis is a very interesting person in American and Southwest history, but author Thompson goes way beyond what most biographers would do and produced a richly researched and highly readable story. I read this book in my car, under a streetlight, while my wife attended a Christmas function. Does that tell you how interesting it is? I've passed Lummis's home/museum thousands of times but never visited--now I will.

a fascinating man of his time!
Mark Thompson's long & deeply researched biography of a forgotten, complex American born just before the Civil War, is fascinating. Over a long & restless life, Charles Lummis became a poet, prolific letter writer, journalist, photographer, archaeologist, editor, champion of Spanish heritage in the Americas, & Indian Rights advocate - the classic workaholic of the late 19th & early 20th Centuries.

It was his TRAMP ACROSS THE CONTINENT in 1884, which he weekly serialized in newspaper articles, that catapulted him into the public's eye. In time, as his assignments for the newly-formed Los Angeles Times, took him deeper into the Southwest which would capture his heart & soul, & closer to the American Indians for whom he would advocate mightily, he caught the ear of a President. Theodore Roosevelt came to consider Lummis a vital part of his "cowboy cabinet," & often invited him to Washington. Lummis enjoyed a life-long influence, via his editorials & many books, on the way Americans thought of themselves.

In this era of bland plasticity, AMERICAN CHARACTER, reminds us of how individualistic, passionate, offensive & charming our forefathers were. It also reminds us of how devastating was our impact upon the people & the land in a time when a man could bemoan the wholesale slaughter of buffalo & Indians, while not batting an eye as he shot other critters just for the thrill of it!

In the light of today's political correctness, Charles Fletcher Lummis' love life was as gilded with misogyny as you would expect from a man of his time - he kept his first marriage secret all through his Harvard years. As in every other aspect of his life, his thirst for affection & companionship was both utilitarian & fascinatingly eccentric.

AMERICAN CHARACTER: Charles Fletcher Lummis & the Rediscovery of the Southwest, has been named by the Western Writers of America as Winner of the 2002 Spur Award in the biography category.

A great story
Charles Fletcher Lummis was a phenomenon--journalist, poet, cross-country tramp, outdoorsman, hunter, newspaper and magazine editor, historian, archaeologist, folklorist, photographer, publicist, Indian rights activist, librarian, preservationist, museum founder, and prodigious lover of dozens of beautiful women. His life story makes for fascinating reading. This book is marred by some factual errors (a "new millennium" did not begin in 1900, and the territory of the Chiricahua Apaches was not "as big as Europe"), but the errors are mostly inconsequential (this is popular history, not a scholarly treatise). Thompson has told a great story, and he has done it very well.

Excellent!!
This AudioCD with Michael Dell, Jack Welch, Jack Greenberg and Quincy Jones is worth a lot more than it's weight in gold. The listener is given the rare opportunity to view the business landscape from the perspective of great leaders who captain some of the biggest and best run companies on the planet. Success in business is about vision, innovation, customers, branding, team building and execution. The candid interviews on this CD bring these points home very clearly. If Tom Peters ever decides to write In Search of Excellence - the millennium edtion, he would do well to begin with the leaders featured on CD #1. Job well done by Mark Thompson and Richard Wilson.

The Real Thing
Forget all the theory and nonsense you hear from the gurus and academics about what they 'imagine' a leader should or could do! This is the real thing. Real CEOs talk about their best ideas and worst mishaps. Finally we hear what works and what doesn't in plain English from people who actually have done it! No secret sauce. No bull. I listened to Leaders of the New Century during my commute this week and I'm requiring my senior management team to listen to the whole set.

Its good to hear real interviews
This audio CD was a refreshing change from the usual audiobook on leadership. Instead of the typical announcer reading from a script - or author reading from a script - this had the interviewees speaking off the cuff about their experiences as leaders.

I particularly enjoyed the interview with Michael Dell. As a business owner, I could take and apply much of what he discussed to my business.

Overall, a very well done CD, with some fascinating guests, discussing what it takes to lead. I look forward to hearing the rest of the series.

Leadership 101
Every CEO should require their team to listen to these leaders. When I think of all the time our management team has wasted with consultants and gurus, I know now that the first thing you should do is get a copy of this series for everyone who works for you and require them to listen to it. This is what leaders have done to win their people and customers from actual interviews with the CEOs themselves. Easy listening format with some interesting insights from leaders in many fields.

Leadership Masterpiece
Thompson and Wilson have put together a remarkable series here, with wisdom from people who have fought for their dreams, suffered setbacks and yet succeeded in every imaginable part of the human experience. Will it make you a better leader and manager? Sure. But the reason is that it's not just about leadership; it's about finding out what matters, then going out and making a difference.

Gifted
Steve Thompson clearly shares an emotional bond with the athletes and students that he gives his life to. He once said, "Life is not only about the 4.0, you need to stop and invest in relationships." Thank you, Steve.

a gift for all baskeball fans
This book is very similar in style and purpose to John Feinstein's "Season On The Brink". The author's main focus in planning this book was to present a day to day behind the scenes look at the 1999-2000 Alabama basketball team. And for the most part that is what Stephen Thompson writes about. What he didn't plan for was the team's loving and caring relationship with Robert Scott, one of the assistant coaches who is suffering from terminal stomach cancer. Despite horrible pain Scott is always there at practices and games and always there to provide emotional support for his young team doomed themselves to a season that would gradually come apart as player after player is lost due to injury. At one time, there were not enough players to even practice. Walk on players were used in games. Yet the team is able to pull off upset wins over ranked teams, Vanderbilt, Tennessee and hated rival Auburn and came close to beating another ranked team...Florida. As a basketball fan I love this book. Thompson takes you inside the locker room, insde the coaches meeting and planning sessions. This book is never mundane. The ending is poignant yet hopeful. This is not just a great baskeball book; it's a great book.

It has been said that sometimes you don't find a book, it finds you. "A Gift Before Dying" is a book that found me. If you're a basketball fan, I hope it finds you.

Well Researched and Entertaining
Although many books have been written about Great Lakes shipwrecks, Thompson's book offers a new perspective by analyzing the causes of wrecks on a large scale. One can see the various factors that made the Lakes particularly dangerous to navigators throughout their history. Thompson's research is equally impressive. Unlike many other books of the genre, Thompson has actually consulted, in most cases, primary archival sources, in developing his wreck accounts, rather than simply rehashing the work of other authors. Thompson's presentation avoids dry regurgitation of statistics and details through an accessible and entertaining writing style that makes the book a better read than similar books on the subject. Although the book is not comprehensive and contains a few forgiveable historical errors, it remains one of the best books on Great Lakes shipwrecks to come out in recent years.

Must have
If you are a maritime enthusiast, Great Lakes visitor, or a history buff then this book is a must own. The pictorials are excellent and each are followed by outstanding descriptions. This book outlines the Great Lakes shipwrecks and how unforgiving these lakes can be.

Inspiration
Listening to Dr. Rachel Remen is a life-changing experience. Most leaders suffer because they never fit in a mold, and now Dr. Remen finally tells us why. Thompson and Wilson have put together a remarkable series here, with wisdom from people who have succeeded in every imaginable part of the human experience. for no-one ever escapes from within the Pallisade of Thorns
In my opinion the best of the series. In Usurper the hero (which you play), Avenger, has to travel to Irsmuncast in the Manmarch to claim back the throne which is rightfully his.

The best thing about the book, other than the great story line, is that you have a choice of two ways in which to travel. You can go a more direct route which is more dangerous or take the indirect route, which is arguably not that much easier. This means you as the player can effectively play the book twice and enjoy it as new the second time round.

The illustrations are lovely and the map is beautifully drawn, the attention to detail is unbelievable at times and you will find yourself not being able to put the book down. SO! why oh why was the way of the Tiger series taken out of print? Because they didn't sell that well? To be honest, I can't understand why.

Classic Adventure
This book is very awsome. I would recommend it to anybody interested in ninjitsu and adventure. The way this book is written immerses the reader in it's world. I've read it over 10 times over the course of many years, which is quiet a feat since I rarely re-read any book I have read.

MATURE CHOOSE-YOUR-OWN-ADVENTURE
Violence, ninjas, barbarians, demons, caves, dungeons, assassinations, etc. This book has just about everything you could want. I first got hooked on this series a LONG time ago but I still remember it. Easy to play, fun to read. Nice artwork. A must-read for all Japanophiles. To be honest, I'm not sure if I read--no, EXPERIENCED is the right word--this book, but chances are I did. Anyway, I remember how fun it was and I hope that you feel the same. It's a pity that these books went in vogue because I feel that they were really amazing in their own little way. It's not all just violence, either. There are some parts in some of the books where you have to choose advisors, because you're a ninja king. Great for the imagination.
