An Excellent Book for Introductory Statistics
I only have the fifth edition of this book, but it is probably similar to this edition. I used this book, when I was teaching statistics many years ago. The book is very clear and it explains each statistical concept very thoroughly.

As an online statistics tutor, I find myself referring to it all the time. It has all of the topics that are normally covered in a first course in statistics. It also has some very good chapters on elective topics such as nonparametrics, sample surveys, and quality control. I took many courses in these subjects in undergraduate and graduate school, and I find that this book is a good review for some of the things I've forgotten.

I have many statistics books both elementary and advanced. This is one of only two elementary books that I would purchase again (my teacher's edition is losing the binding!).

It is probably the most complete book on statistics that I have ever read at this level. I would certainly recommend this book to anybody who is taking statistics for the first time. I would also recommend this book to statistics majors who plan to go into teaching and need a good review text.

A Very Helpful Book
This is a definately worthwhile learning tool which can aid anyone who is attempting to tackle statistics for the first time. The methods and theories are concise, direct, and most of all, clearly stated. The authors bring you step by step through each procedure and then offer exercises to demonstrate the process while giving you the confidence to go on.

This book was puchased midway through the semester. At that time I was struggling to maintain a C average. With the help of this book I was able to close the semester with an 89% average.

This book is easy to understand.
After taking this course for the second time, I found that this book really explained concepts well. I had trouble learning statistics the first time, but this book adds real-life applications making it easy to learn why it works the way it does. If you are hesitant or jittery about this class...relax. This book will make your life easier.

A useful book. . .
. . .by authors who remember that they are writing for persons who are NOT professional mathematicians.

In today's world, frequently persons enter the business profession from a background in something other than what in the past might have been considered traditional avenues. Not all business textbooks recognize this (see my review for "Mathematical Applications")! However, this book seems to be an exception.

The material is presented in a logical format; key formulae are highlighted and set off from the rest of the text; and in-depth business examples are given in each chapter, demonstrating the particular statistical tools to be taught.

A useful and recommended volume.

Great Text!!
The information in this book is clear-cut, concise, and easy to read. Easily understandable examples are given for the various statistical formulas, and extras like z-score value charts and the like help a lot. If you have a talented instructor leading your Stats class (like I did) in addition to this text, you will be sure to ace this course (like I did)!

P.S.: If you happen to be an Information Systems/Information Technology major (such as myself) DO NOT RE-SELL THIS BOOK! You will need the information in this book in your future Info Systems courses, and you will definitely realize the TRUE value of this text!

Biochemistry - A Case Oriented Approach
I have used the 3rd edition of this text since I was an undergraduate in nutrition studies 20 years ago and eagerly await the 6th edition now available. Among all my texts in nutrition, biochemistry, diagnosis of nutrition related problems, and clinical application of biochemistry, I have returned to this text the most often. It has reliably given the most applicable, actionable information for my own work in nutrition care practice today. It has also been a fast reference for brushing up on obscure metabolic mysteries, useful for any practicing clinician.

Beyond reasonable doubt?
Published in Unknown Binding by Hodder and Stoughton ()
Author: David A. Yallop

Time will tell....
The problem with a discussion of this book is that anyone who goes outside its parameters risks court action. Any bdiscussion while pricipal actors are still alive, which might seriously challenge Yallop's assertions must therefore await untill the hand of God permits a more open discussion of what did, and did not, what might, and what might not, have taken place.

certainly, to dismiss the "dead cartridge in the magazine" theory out of hand as the one person Royal Commission did (and he was a person not without controversy in his own right) is hardly fair to anyone involved.

WHO FED THE BABY?
"Who fed the baby?" is the question on the lips of most of the people who know of this case. I feel that there will be no closure to this story as some people involved in this case are either dead or are keeping quiet for ever. I have seen the house that these shootings took place as it seems to have become a bit of a tourist attraction for those in New Zealand who know and wonder about this case. I even have a family member that lived in the area and knew Arthur Alan Thomas when the shootings occured. It has become a public fascination and one of lifes' mysteries.David Yallop has taken chances when writing this book as the case is still mentioned from time to time and the question of who fed nany Rochelle is still asked. I found this book fairly hard to read as the scientific evidence is hard to sift through. You read about more than one trial here and it can be hard going although to really understand why AA Thomas was convicted, you must first read the 'evidence'. I don't know who shot and killed Harvey and Jeanette Crew or who fed the baby but I feel that it was NOT Arthur Thomas.Maybe it was the dad (Len Demler) and maybe the sister Heather is involved and that's who fed the child but I just don't know for sure.Nobody does. It's why this case is still popular. David Yallop claims that he has evidence that a 'certain' woman was involved and he 'knows for sure' that she was in the country.Heather right?I think so but he cannot come out and say it for legal reasons I suppose. The book does show you that stuff ups were made in the trials. All the evidence about all the guns in the area not being tested is true.I know,as one of the few rifles not tested belongs to a family member of mine and he told me that it was offered for testing but the police couldn't be bothered to come and get it.We still have that gun,I have used it myself. Everyone who reads about this case will form their own opinion and everyones will be different. This case is fascinating but I don't know as you will get the full impact by reading this account. The book is long and heavy going but you can still catch enough of the details to see where David Yallop is heading. My advice is that if you start to read it and you get confused with all the details, then put it away for a couple of days and then try again.

Brilliant book
I read this book some years ago after finding a mention of it in an old Readers Digest article. (Nov.'79) David Yallop's examination of all the evidence quite clearly portrays Arthur Thomas'es innocence and tears to shreds the police investigation and evidence of some of the wittnesses. Makes me wonder what did go on and it seems that Leonard Delmer had something to do with it... But one feels sorry for Rochelle Crewe, (the baby found in her cot) now in her thirties, and apparently living in America.
The whole book is one which makes me feel for the living victims of this tragedy.

Battle of the Java Sea
Published in Unknown Binding by Deutsch ()
Author: David Arthur Thomas

Average review score:

The sea battles and the loss of the Netherlands East Indies.
A relatively good book about the sea battles which resulted in the loss of the Netherlands East Indies to the Japanese Empire in 1942. During these battles, the U.S. lost the heavy cruiser Houston, several destroyers, and the first airplane carrier Langley. The losses to the Australians, Dutch, and British were more heavy. The plum target for the Japanese were the oil of the Indies and the rich island of Java. These battles determined the fate of the Dutch Empire in Asia and placed a threat to Australia.
One thing I liked about this book, which I felt lacked in some of the other battle books is the relative strength of the Allies versus the Japanese Empire. Thomas spent a large amount of page space covering this and why the Allies failed in this crucial battle.
I gave this book an average rating, since the style of writing by Thomas was not page turning. The battles were detailed, but no personal experiences were written into them. One faced why the ABDA forces failed and the Japanese won.

ABSOLUTELY THE WORST TEXTBOOK FROM A STUDENT'S PERSPECTIVE
I am currently taking a Quant Meth class which is using this as the textbook. By far, this is the worst textbook I have ever encountered as a student. It is hard to understand and the answers that are given in the back do not explain how to get to the final solution. Because the problems are not paired (that is 1 is not like 2, 3 is not like 4, etc.) and the only answers are to the EVEN problems, you are basically lost. There is a website for the 9th edition that is "under construction" currently, so there is no help there. This is not a book conducive to learning. Teachers and colleges - PLEASE think twice before you choose this for your curriculum. Both you and your students will be miserable!

Quantitative Methods 8th Edition
I am a professor using this book to teach a graduate level Quantitative Methods math class. This book is hard to understand for the students. Exercises included at the end of the chapters are hard to figure for the student based on what is presented in the text alone.
For the instructor, no teacher support is available except a solutions manual. All other texts I have used provides sample lecture material, additional cases, etc. This text provides no such support with a useless web site.
