The Brothers Grimm

Everything you ever wanted to know about THE Brothers Grimm!
The author views the Grimms in the context of eighteenth and early nineteenth century Germany and discusses their positions as pioneers of German philology, as members of the "Gottingen Seven," and inside the circle of German romantics. The brothers' lives unfold against a background of wars and revolutions--theFrench Revolution, Napoleon, Waterloo, the collapse of the Holy Roman Empire, and the Rise of the Common Man. Michaelis-Jena surveys Jacob's important work in compartive philology and mythology (work that led to the formulations of Grimm's law). Wilhilm's contributions as an editor of German classics, and the work of both, in later years on an eighteen-volume dictory of the German language are also considered.

Leading Games and Everything
Bill and John are personal friends of mine. I've known them since the 70s when John and Burton and I were co-leading the New Games Foundation. Bill has been teaching recreation at San Francisco State and stayed with it despite lack of funding and recognition for-just-about-ever. So anything I have to say about this book is probably suspect.

On the other hand, I REALLY like this book. In my 30 years of exploring new games and deeper fun, I haven't found any book that could actually portray New Games leadership as comprehensively and compassionately.

It is, of course, about more than leading games. It is about leadership itself, and a startlingly revolutionary model for the kind of leadership that truly serves the players.

Momentary Reflection on Movement: The Spirit of T'Ai Chi

Connections, knowledge, and understanding
David Michaeli blends poetry, art, and the essence of T'ai Chi into a slim but weighty book. He moves the reader along a circular path of knowledge, sensation, movement, and understanding with gently paced words. He acknowledges that living in a modern world is often like straddling a gulf created by inner and outer tensions. Michaeli's teachings suggest that we stand in the center of all directions and energies. From this center, we can create an axis of equilibrium. It is not required to read this book from front to back. It may be enjoyed by topic or simply page by page. This is not an ordinary self-help book. It does not include written rules or recipes, but if you are open to sensations and perceptions, it may open a door of self-understanding.

Quite coincidentally, I first opened this book on the Princeton campus. This happened about a year ago; I have finished the book three times since. If you like Princeton - read this book. If you like atomic bombs - read this book. If you like mushrooms - read this book. To sum up my review: This book is a must for any self-respecting human.

History of the SS-Heimwehr Danzig
This small book is great. It covers the formation, training and combat of the SS-Heimwehr Danzig. this small unit once saw itself as the defence troop for the "Free City of Danzig." Its formation began in 1939 as the polictical tensions between Germany and Poland increased. Their establishment and a detailed account of their deployment in the Polish Campaign. And then their absorption into the SS Totenkopf Division.

This book is written from eyewitness accounts by participants and reprints of secondary literature. The translation has not been edited in any way. A must read...

An excellent book on NC Wyeth and his oeuvre
I discovered NC Wyeth accidentally as he is not known at all in France. I already had a book with some of his illustrations without any text attached to it so it was with great pleasure I read this enthralling book. What moved me the most was his profound sense of failure regardless of all the praise he was receiving. Michaelis is not so much making Wyeth's pictures talk as making Wyeth's voice heard. It is also a very vivid description of the passing of an era, through the eyes of someone, Wyeth, who is desperate for its passing. As for the book, it is a beautiful edition with carefully chosen illustrations. A great read.

Even for those who have no idea who the Wyeth family is.
I don't know if there is another Family that has continuously contributed to the world of art, and done so with such skill, as the 5 generations of Wyeths whose story is told in this work.

The title of my review may seem a bit odd but I believe those who read this book will find it appropriate. I read this book when it originally was published and then recently read it again. You need not be anything more than someone who loves to read to enjoy this book. While I am a great admirer of Mr. Andrew Wyeth's work and to a lesser extent other members of the Wyeth Family, I have no Art History education. The beauty of this work is that it is an incredible story on it's own, that additionally the story is true with 2 Wyeth Family members still painting, only enhances the reading. The fact this is not fiction makes the story all the more remarkable.

If you have already read about Mr. Andrew Wyeth's work you certainly will gain a great deal of insight as to why he may view his art as he does. Another wonderful book that focuses on Mr. Andrew Wyeth is by Richard Merryman, "Andrew Wyeth A Secret Life". It often seems that great artists in a range of artistic fields seem to have more than their share of drama in their lives. This is certainly the case with this 5 generational span of the Wyeths. There is also a great deal of tragedy and sadness.

Whether or not you are aware of or enjoy the work of The Wyeth Clan, they have and will continue to remain of great importance to Art History. Ranging from the illustrations by N.C Wyeth of dozens of books that are known to us all, to some of the most recognized images in the world as is the case with Andrew Wyeth's "Christina's World" from 1948, chances are you do know of the Wyeths.

The story most don't know is of the woman who is in the mentioned painting, her lifetime, and the stories and paintings that resulted from the house that she is looking towards in the painting. Not all of what you will learn is comfortable, some is sad; some behavior from members of the Family is eccentric to say the least.

What you will experience is a sweeping story that continues to this day. If an endorsement by an internationally acclaimed Artist would help, read what Mr. Barry Moser had to say about this book. And then go look at the book he was illustrating, the work he set aside to read this story. I cannot think of a more reliable recommendation.

Know the Family, know the work, or read as a novel. You will not de disappointed.

Interesting reading on many levels
Even if the Wyeths had had no artistic legacy, this book would still be fascinating. Michaelis tells a complex and engaging story set in a time of great change in America. Thouroughly entertaining and informative.

A very good ship/air group history at the end of W.W.II
Crommelin's Thunderbirds is written by two Navy veterans who flew in from the U.S.S. Randolph (CV-15), in Air Group Twelve. It covers the period from February to June 1945. The ship flew in operations on Japan, and Iwo Jima before suffering Kamikaze damage while at the forward base, Ulitihi. Their Air Group Commander, Charles Crommelin was detatched on temporary duty with the U.S.S. Hornet, at that time. Commander Crommelin, one of the five Crommelin brothers, the most decorated family in U.S. Navy history, was killed in action over Okinawa while with the Hornet. Air Group Twelve continued, and from early April 1945, the ship returned to action, flying cover for operations off Okinawa. In the book there are many reminiscences by veterans of how an event looked to them. This adds a "first-person" quality to the work that helps its perspective. It is well-written and interesting throughout. This period of World War II in the Pacific has not had much written about it. Yet there are parts of it that remain current today. This time of the war saw manned bombs (Kamikazes), that foreshadowed the guided missle warfare of the present.

An essential carrier warfare documentary
My Dad was one of Crommelin's Thunderbirds as a TBM aviator, so granted I'm a bit biased, but it's a great read, due in large part to the personal anecdotes contained within. Too many of today's generation haven't a clue of what our parents generation sacrificed. This book brings a lot of that home.
