The best How To, and, What To Expect for beginner riders
I was truly blessed at an early age to have this and Gymkhana in my room when I first began to ride. This is a marvelous and loving look at children and horseback riding. Any parent with a child, particularly a daughter, beginning Enlgish riding instruction ought to make every effort to find this book. Like my tattered copy, it will become an heirloom. PCK, NJ.

A British cartoonist looks at learning to ride a pony
This is one of my favorite books from childhood. A tongue-in-cheek riding instruction manual, it is filled with cartoons about the antics of girls and their sometimes-naughty ponies. Add subtle British humor to the mix, and it's a must for girls in that "horsey" stage . . . my 10-year-old adores it!

Cartoons of children in formal English atop fat littleponies
Everything you ever experienced at a riding academy with a chuckle on every page. Or if you've never been to a riding academy, you'll want to after looking this over. Angie Lohman

Much more fun than Rug Rats!
This book contains a series of Thelwell's fantastic cartoons, concentrating on the joys and pitfalls of having children. If you've got children, you'll recognize most of these scenes. If you don't, learn what you're getting into!

A hysterical guide to equestrian etiquette
No one captures English equestrian society more perfectly than talented British cartoonist Norman Thelwell. With humorous commentary and side-splitting illustrations, Thelwell guides us through the finer points of training a jumper and show-ring behavior. You don't have to be a horse-fanatic to appreciate Thelwell's dry wit as he pokes fun at the trials and tribulations of owning a horse. Thelwell's Gymkhana is a must-read!!

re-release of three of his best!
Pony Panorama is a re-release of "Thelwell Goes West," "Penelope," and Gymkhana." These are three of my all-time favorite Thelwell books. At last, we don't have to haunt the used bookstores any more!

Loved it,Bever laughed so hard while reading a book.
My aunt Hermina English,an avid Day Lily gardener(now deceased) loaned the book to me. Upon seeing how hilarious I found the book to be, she bought another copy and sent it to me. The humor, subtle and dead-on, is more than well-matched with the humorous illustrations. Anyone who has attempted a garden(and lost) can readily identify with the hapless gardener featured in this book. Rihard C. Undy

Sadly disappointed . . .
I purchased this book for my pony-crazy daughter, but am sadly disappointed. Poor quality printing makes this edition of Norman Thelwell's timeless equine drawings pale in comparison to other, earlier versions. The muddy reproductions of Thelwell's drawings blur or omit the amazing detail of the originals, which made them so memorable when I first read then as a child. I will be perusing the used-book sites for the circa 1970 editions to share with my daughter!

re-release
Thelwell's Pony Cavalcade is a re-release of his earlier books "Angels on Horseback," "A Leg at Each Corner," and "Riding Academy." The cartoons are delightful, and will be appreciated by all horsepeople.

cherished since childhood
I was so happy to find that this book (collection of three books actually) by Thelwell had been re-released. As another reviewer said the quality of the illustrations are not a good as the origional editions. But the spirit of his art and humour is still intact. This book is a collection of very funny sketches of horses and their owners going through everything that horses and their owners go through, then some. For example: bathing and grooming your horse. Plenty of opportunity for fun when your horse is reluctant or your skills are lacking. Another example: riding. "never try out novel ways of getting into a saddle....you'll enjoy quite enough variety-...getting out of it". The illustrations, of course, hilariously illustrate the point. So the book is a combination of clever comments and observations and illustrations that bring the humour to life. It is also VERY British. English riding exclusively in this book and the humour is very British as well(Thelwell approaches western riding in 'Pony Panorama').If you like 'Punch' you will appreciate Thelwell. Also check out Thelwells books on gardening, golf etc. He is a master of his art. (P.S. if you want inspiration for an easy to do mural for your horseloving childs wall this book is perfect - your only problem will be choosing which illustration to copy - they are all so funny and wonderful)

Another great cat book!
The Cat's Pyjamas is another spectacular book by the British cartoonist Norman Thelwell. In this book, he has taken a series of words or phrases that relate to cats and drawn cartoons that illustrate the meaning or the humour behind the phrase. My all-time favorite is "octopuss," although "see which way the cat jumps" and "make a cat laugh" are also high on my list of favorites. It's a fantastic book for cat-lovers, and pretty darn funny even if you don't like cats.
