A Coffee Table Book that Reads like a Novel
This beautiful book tells the story of the wonderful murals that you see all over Philadelphia. It is more than just a pretty book, however, because it is also the story of Jane Golden and how the Philadelphia Anti-Graffiti Network started and how it has grown over the years. The pictures are photographed with amazing accuracy, and the authors have maintained a professional attitude while making the reader feel compelled to continue reading. The book makes you want to see in person all the wondrous walls that Jane Golden and her muralists have created. A great gift and an even greater find.

Wow! I didn't know Philadelphia had so many murals!
What a surprise I had in learning that Philadelphia, a city I've lived in for over ten years, has over 2,000 murals. And,in this book, they are beautifully displayed (well, not all 2000) and discussed. I learned about the artists who created the murals, the communities where the murals are, and just lots of interesting details about the mural arts program in Philadelphia--the most prolific in the country. And, I can't say enough about how spectacularly beautiful the photographs are. If you're ever in Philadelphia, you must buy this book and take a stroll through some of the neighborhoods that house the murals. There's even a map.

Resist Interrogation
There are many manuals on techniques of interrogation, but few dealing with the subject's point of view. Luger's book is valuable because it gives you valuable information on how to resist being pressured and manipulated by skilled interrogators who want to make you say what they want. Luger deals with the psychology of interrogation, and lays out many tactics and tricks interrogators use to make people talk, such as indicating the interrogation is over and slipping in some casual questions to catch the subject off guard. He also points out that interrogators are not necessarily police, but often employers who wilol use a variety of tactics to winnow information, including personal information, from job-seekers. This book provides the reader with an array of methods to avoid being manipulated by interrogators and interviewers, including how to cope with the polygraph and psychological tests. All told, this unique book is worth reading by anyone who has to face interviews and interrogations.

Witness ToThe Struggle: Eye For The Prize!
Ever since the assasination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968, the rich legacy of the city and its key role as a bridge and innovator in the Civil Rights struggle has been obscured at best and ignored at worst. From its heroic role in the yellow fever epidemic, its pioneering contributions to the anti-lynching campaign, its legacy in health care and educational leadership, its singular place in the birth of rhythm and blues to its leadership in the evolution of Gospel Music and Black Christian Theology, Memphis has been largely ignored and unappreciated. Although its history as the King of Cotton rivals the sugar kingdom of New Orleans and its place as the transportation corridor on the Mississippi Bluff excels Atlanta and its presence as the center of hope and culture for Arkansas and Mississippi gave life to St Louis, Kansas City and Chicago and refuge to persecuted refugees from Mississippi and Arkansas. The diversity of its Artistry gave life to every range of Artist from blues to country, classical, opera, pop, jazz, be bop, spirituals and swing. Thanks to the pictures of Earnest Withers and the richness of his living, the truth of Memphis and its heroic contributions can never be loss. He has recorded its cross fertilization as a center of rebirth and growth. Because of his eye for the prize the Confederate city with an Egyptian name has embraced the possibilities of its African roots and made the assassins place of Martin Luther King Jr. a place where the immortality of Elvis grew out of the sounds of WC Handy and the richness of Beale Street. His own contribution as a soldier policeman and father, both in tragedy and triumph, give credibilty and honesty to his insights and his vision. As a member of my wife's maternal family and the actor James Earl Jones, and as a photographic ally of my brother, Benjamin Sims, I can testify to the validity of his experience. Like Parks, his pictures belong among the great treasures in the annals of our time. Anyone sincere about the history of Human rights should include his book as a permanent part of their library.

Peter's Chair (Tell Me a Story)

not the author's best
I came to Ezra Jack Keats' _Peter's Chair_ with high expectations. My two-year old and I both love his other books, like Goggles, A Letter To Amy, and Whistle for Willie.

_Peter's Chair_ is something of a disappointment. Drawn in the same style as his other titles, it's the story of Peter, who becomes an older brother for the first time. He rebels when he finds out that all his baby things are being reassigned to the baby girl, and given a fresh coat of PINK paint. Eventually he comes to accept that he's got to share the spotlight, and all is well.

When a younger sibling is born, it's nearly always a struggle for the older child to learn to share the parental attention. This is a common issue dealt with in children's books. Sad to say, it isn't dealt with very well in this book. _Peter's Chair_ just isn't a very good story, and children of the 1990s and later, who can't see that PINK MUST EQUAL GIRL and BLUE MUST EQUAL BOY are going to be confused by this implication.

Please, go look at the author's other titles: Goggles, A Letter To Amy, and Whistle for Willie, among others. They are most wonderful books by Ezra Jack Keats. Sad to say, I can only give _Peter's Chair_ 3 stars.

Wonderful book!
I have 2 boys in 1st grade with little sisters. This book reflects the struggle that they go through in sharing things with younger siblings.

Keisha's Love of Peter's Chair
I teach children ages3-5 and one day I went to the library to get some books for them PETER'S CHAIR was among the selection it also came with the tape so when I wasn't able to read to the children I would put hte tape on for them. The children requested the book everyday up until the day I had dto take it back, there was one child in particular who would come up to me and say Ms.Tracey could you read Peter's Chair to me so I would sit her on my lap and read it just to her and than one day she came to me and said can I read Peter's Chair to you Ms.Tracey, and so in her own words and with expression she read Peter's Chair it did my heart good that she (KEISHA)had started her love for books. Thanks to Ezra Jack Keats you've made a difference in a child's life.

Not the Typical Tale
The illustrations for the version of Jack and the Beanstalk are wonderful, however, the text is from a 1807 version and is difficult to read easily. This is compounded by the fact that it is in rhyme so some of the words/grammer are really strange to keep the rhyme pattern.

Great Work!
This is a wonderful approach to the fairy tale stories. I've read several of Mrs. Capps-Burgess books and all of them are excellent! They make extra special gifts for the young reader.

A great new tale not of the fairy kind, but Faith.
Mrs. Capps-Burgess, the daughter of famed Arkansan Bible Teacher and farmer Charles Capps, does an extrodinary job of transplacing the traditional Fairy tales into Faith tales. A former reviewer has sent back her copy and declared that she, the reader, is religious. Herein lies the reason she misunderstands Mrs. Burgess. Mrs. Burgess is not religious, but rather maintains a relationship with Jesus Christ. It would be a mystery as to why Mrs. Burgess has written this new "twist" were it not for a fact that millions have stepped aside from religion and moved ahead toward this relationship building class for their children with Jesus Christ. In my opinion, only those parents who have strong Bible-believing faith, would approve of the works of Beverly Capps Burgess. Those who claim to be religious should probably continue to hold to traditional fairy tales.

Not quite heat
This is touted as gay men's "real life sex stories", but one suspects more than just a bit of fabrication. Indeed one suspects that Mr. Hart himself, a highly prolific gentleman in a burst of perfervid production, wrote the entire book. There's just too much...sameness here and predictability. I love a muscular young hunk as well as the next fellow, but one yearns for some variety here, something more offbeat, more REAL. At least more plausible situations and interesting "characters" would have helped and made the stories a whole hell of a lot more erotic. These vignettes unfold with the inevitability of a bad porno flick, and I'm afraid they have the same nourishment value.

Invocative, but loses its spice.
I have read several books by Jack Hart, and Heat is fasinating and invocative. When I first started reading this book, I couldn't put it down. Hart goes into great detail describing the charaters, but it backfired of him this time. About 2/3 into the book, I though I would die if I read about one more blond head, blue eyed person. It appears that Hart ran out of pictures in his head to write about. The premise is that these are true stories, but it becomes obvious that Hart was creating these stories himself. It took away from the erocticism. For these who love to endulge in autoeroctocism, this could be one of the better books on the market. I really enjoyed my time with the book once I overlooked the flaws.

Hackneyed and Boring
Newfield has to be one of the most humorless journalists who ever wrote about the 60's. He calls this an upbeat memoir but I found it a downer. It's a lot of self congratulation with same old cliches and no real thoughtfulness. The world has changed and passed Newfield by. It's all been done before and far better too. Spare yourself.

Wonderful and moving!
This is a very evocative and entertaining autobiography that vividly recreats newfield's childhood and coming of age as a working class radical journalist and student activist in the 60s. Newfield seemed to know everyone who was anyone in the 60s and was was closely involved in the creation of SDS. Newfield also provides us great stories about the four things he loves most and writes about best: baseball, boxing, jazz and -- of course -- New York CIty. A lovely book, full of Runyonesque character.
