A great author for a great book
This book is fascinating. What most do not know is that Mose Richards wrote this entire book, while Cousteau supplied the inspiration and pictures. This book has excellent writing and fabulous photography. An excellent read. Props to the author, Mose Richards!

Jaws!
A very informative book about the great white. The photos are amazing. This Shark is one of the most interesting animals alive. A real predator.

I hail thee, Great White Shark!
For surviving for 400 million years. For refusing to submit yourself to mankind's aquariums and corporate SeaWorlds. For never allowing your secrets of mating or birth to become known to the prying eyes of man. For not even leaving a skeleton for science to attempt to examine. For being the Master of the Seas, without even using mechanical aids to assist you, like we, the Humans, the Wimps, the Know-Nothings, the Arrogant Pestilence of the World must resort to to even attempt to conquer you. Keep fighting, Terrible, Beautiful Lordly Ones. We offer you humble, unworthy obeisance in the form of this book, under the aegis of your most dutiful admirer, Jacques Cousteau, Poseidon rest his soul. Never has your grace nor your fearful symmetry appeared to such great advantage. Keep cruising. May your fins glide through the oceans long after the peasants have ceased to crawl upon the earth--or dared to trawl upon the waters!

A great resource for teachers too!
I have used databases before (mostly NCBI, TIGR and SWISS PROT) and yet, this book (presumably for dummies) has shown me so much more(which say a lot about me)! It is accurate and gives good step by step guide to how to perform many tasks - from how to find a gene to using the analysis tools and to exploring some of the newer features of these databases - and the areas like you have never looked into before.
It is a well-researched book and the authors are clearly knowledgeable in this area.

Even though I have been for a 4-day bioinformatics course (6 months ago), which I thought was pretty good, this book still had so much to offer. Using this book, I was easily able to substitute the proteins of my interest into their examples and generated meaningful hits.

The book also covers deeper and more advanced features of BLAST, discusses sequence alignments using several types of algorithm and even has a section on 3D structures. Towards the end of book - it features a section on working with mRNA and building phylogenetics trees - which again are excellent resources for teachers involved in teaching beginners molecular biology.

I am a teacher teaching at a Pre-unversity level. The way the book is structured also lends its material to be modified into lesson materials for training students.

It is really a great book! Worth every dollar I spent on it!

Get this book first, before enrolling in an expensive course
This book will get you up and running on Bioinformatics in no time. I wish I got this book before I enrolled in a $$$$$ Bioinformatics course. I got more knowledge and information from this book $$$$$ than the course! And I am just in chapter 5 of the book and I'm more than half way through that $$$$$ course.

Great book-- Technical without the Computer-ese
I got this book a week ago because one of my profs offered to buy it for a volunteer who was willing to check it out and then make a recommendation on it to the rest of the class. I'm glad I volunteered, and I'm encouraging my classmates to get their hands on a copy. This book wasn't boring. It was completely hands on, and it addressed the topic from the perspective of a biologist, not a technophile-- which was exactly what I needed. It helped me reconcile my love for pure science with my increasing anxiety about needing to be so darn computer proficient to have any kind of job I can apply my degree to these days. I'm glad I got a hold of it early in the semester. I think it's going to really impact my grade in the class-- Oh, and my understanding of bioinformatics!

The Fishes of the Galapagos Islands

Most comprehensive catalog of galapagos fish
Drawing on more than 20 years of first hand research and collecting, as well as historical and contemporary data, this is a most comprehensive catalog of the fishes found in the waters surrounding the Galapagos Islands. Filling a void in the study of the Galapagos, this volume demonstrates that the marine life is as varied, unusual, & unique as the land animals which have been so well documented. 437 fish are included with 41 being unique to the region. For each species there is a general description, natural history, habitat, range and size. There is a b/w drawing or photo of most species plus 150 excellent color photos, most showing a live fish in its habitat. To assist future visitors in using the book as an identification guide, a description of prime diving sites is included. This book will prove to be invaluable to the student of the Galapagos environment or of fishes in general.

The only comprehensive review of Galapagos fishes.
This book is the result of over 20 years of research by the authors in the Galapagos Islands, including ten by Dr. Grove while he worked in the marine reserve as a naturalist and researcher. Over 400 species are reviewed which include the vast majority of those known to be found at the time of the manuscript's going to press. Unlike simple field guides, this volume provides interesting aspects of the natural history of most species in addition to accurate illustrations. Not only is this book an absolute must for anyone interested in the marine life of the Galapagos, but also an invaluable reference tool for those interested in the fish life of the tropical east Pacific.

A great look at gundogs from the eyes of a French hunter
Although superficially just another pretty canine encyclopedia, the succinct and honest descriptions of the breeds make this worth the price. Typical of Europeans, Lepeudry knows how to look critically at something without necessarily being critical OF it (indeed, he takes great pride in the cynological achievements from all over the globe). He provides great insights into the regional breeds of France, as well as other Continentals such as the GWP and Pudelpointer. He tells about his countrymen did not initially understand the nature of flushing spaniels and retrievers, and subsequently bred many poor ones. Predominantly American breeds (e.g. the Chessie and the Toller) are featured as well, but no mention of the Boykin or American Water Spaniel. Hounds, terriers, and dachshunds get their own section. His description of how the French countryside has changed (thus changing hunting and hunting dogs) will strike home with American who see the same things happening now on our continent. This book is a good read for American sporting dog enthusiasts, as the author's perspective and style is refreshing break from the "oh-so-careful-not-to-offend" style of most American gun dog writers.

Not just for the hunter
In the preface, the author writes that while not everyone likes a hunter, hunting dogs are very likeable. This is an excellent introduction to the sporting dog breeds. The text describes about 70 breeds, including some rare ones that have recently been introduced to North America, including the Braque du Bourbonnais, the French Spaniel, the Picardy Spaniel, and the Bracco Italiano. The photography is excellent. The author groups breeds according to their main function (pointer, retriever, spaniel, scenthound, and terrier) and organizes them by region of origin. For the pet-lover, who is looking for a companion dog, the description of hunting style is useful: Do you want a dog who will run way ahead of you and call back in a loud bay, or one who will stay close by your side? The book gives a lot of information on the evolution of gun-dog breeds, in some cases applauding the results (the Brittany is described as "perfect") and otherwise, complaining about breeders tainting the original breed with the introduction of dogs from outlying regions. One drawback of the book is that the author ignores the fact that hunters hunt only about four months out of the year, and the rest of the time they need to be able to live with their dogs. There is little information on how the various breeds are in the home: easy to housebreak? OK with pet cats? shed a lot? dig up the yard? drool? grooming needs? Another criticism is that the histories are not entirely accurate. For example, the author claims the Bourbonnais was re-created after becoming extinct (not exactly) and that today's white Spinoni are considered to be closer to the original breed than the brown roans (the opposite is true).

This book covers JMJ's life almost from birth to the mid 80s
When I had read this book, I had get a better point of wiev on JMJ's life. The book is very good describing JMJ's life almost from birth to the mid 80's and finish with Rendez Vouz Lyon. The documentary photographs that are published in this book are very good, Charlotte Rampling's feeling for photographing is very good. and you get a very intimate perspective in JMJ's life and work.

A must for any Jean Michel Jarre freak!
Lots of big format pages with some excellent colour photography of concert and personal pictures (with many by Charlotte Rampling). In-depth details of the Place de la Concorde, China, Lyon and Houston concerts with detailed background text and vital information. Anybody with an interest in the work of Jean Michel Jarre should have this book in their collection. Unmissable!

Great small book on contemporary art!
This truly is a great book on contemporary art! I liked it a lot.
In this small edition, only about 190 pages, you get a lot of information about actual art and artist. The stil of the book is a beautiful combination of images and short but interesting texts. Also many important and international representives of contemporary art are shown. I recommend this book especially to people who want to get a first insight to contempory art.

An epic masterpiece
A sprawling epic tale in the style of Sergio Leone's classic spaghetti westerns, we follow the exploits of Marshal Mike Blueberry as he ventures through the untamed west in search of a fugitive Dutchman, who may, or may not know the whereabouts of a mythical goldmine. All of the archetypal western elements are present - dramatic shoot outs, collapsing mineshafts, bar room brawls, vengeful bounty hunters, card games, double crosses, attacking Indians and much more.

A true classic which, tragically, for the most part has remained unknown outside of Europe, The Lost Dutchmen's Mine ranks alongside all of the the modern masterpieces such as Watchmen, Dark Knight, Sandman, Elektra : Assassin and Love and Rockets.

It is probably Moebius' (who I consider to be the greatest living comics artist) most memorable achievement.

If you want to try something new and truly incredible, then you should get this book now as it has a habit of going out of print for long periods of time.

Jean Michel Basquiat (Art Random Series, No 101)

New York Graffiti Artist turns SuperStar!
THE best book on Basquiat out there! A very talented New York artist that started out doing graffiti on the New York Subways as SAMO and instantly became famous after one day meeting Andy Warhol and giving him a postcard of his artwork. They became quick friends and Warhol had a great influence on his very short career even though Jean-Michel's work is totally different. Jean Michel died tragically from a drug overdose. Cool little known fact - He dated Madonna! Great photos of the Jean-Michel and an incredible extended chronology in the back of the book. Best yet info on the artist existing anywhere in the the book. Color plates of his art work are superb, large, and mostly one per page, incredible color. I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of Jean-Michel or his friends Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, or Andy Warhol.

Basquiat at its Best
If you are looking for a wonderful combination of Basquiat's work and biography, this is the book to own. This book is full of many beautiful color plates of his work, as well as the story of his short, successful, but tragic life as an artist who had his brief moment in the sun before succumbing to the drugs.

Basquiat wasn't afraid to be his own man
This is a great book with many of Basquiat's paintings and drawings. It also has various essays by art critics and people who knew him. I suppose the reviewers who slammed Basquiat also think anybody could knock over a couple of paint buckets and be Jackson Pollock. The genius of Basquit in my mind is his ability to create truly beautiful paintings while painting in a seemingly uncontrolled, primitive (I hate that word) fashion. The way he layered colors, and added details is incredible. My favorite is "Untitled (Skull)" 1981. Here is a brilliant example of how Basquiat combines dissarray, ugliness, harmony, and beauty all into the same striking painting. I know Basquiat idolized Hendrix and ultimately went out much like he did, unable to cope with his talent and the attention it brought. To me Basquiat's painting very much mirrors Hendrix's musical talents. They both created wild, noisy, seemingly unharnessed, unpolished art. But to the careful, sensitive observer the true beauty and magic is revealed.
