The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood
Published in Hardcover by Facts on File, Inc. (2002)
Authors: James Robert Parish and T. Allan Taylor
Amazon base price: $75.00
Average review score:

Encyclopedic!
Mary Jane Alexander, I am a New York film critic and enthusiast.

Film historian and authority James Robert Parish has done it again! "The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood," like all of Mr. Parish's well-regarded books, is comprehensive, thoroughly accurate and immensely readable. The sheer research is astounding and Mr. Parish uncovers the many fascinating tidbits that enliven film history. This is a book that is a must not only for every film and media library, but also for the general reader and film fan who wants is interested in the careers, lives and place in film history of the many ethnic stars who have thrilled us on screen. Bravo.

Also recommended: The Hollywood Songsters; Hollywood Divaas; and Hollywood Bad Boys

It's All in the Details
This is a wonderfully concise, detailed, and helpful general reference source for anyone researching ethnicity in the major films, television shows and performers of the past century. The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood is easy to read, gives only the important highlights of each title and personality, and is well-indexed. The photographs in the book are nostalgic and illustrative. It's all in here -- the breakthroughs, the award winners, the important firsts, as well as other contributions that make Hollywood history and today's Hollywood unique.

Here is an "ABOUT TIME!" book
The movies have always help guide and shape moviegoers into an an understanding of who they are, where they're from, and where they're going. But much of the vast American public has been virtually invisible on the screen -- which is why this book is so valuable. Our overlooked ethnic groups -- African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Jewish Americans, and Native Americans -- now have a wonderful reference source to help them understand who they are, where they're from, where they're going. This encyclopedia may be a bit pricey for average bookbuyers (where's the cheaper paperback edition?), but it will be criminal if every library in the country doesn't make it readily available.

Outstanding!
I have known for a long time that we lead very toxic lives... but this was a bit of a wake-up call. Since Ive spent a great deal of time and energy tring to cleanse from parasites and detoxify. Anyone who found this book useful might like the ebook posted on the bodypurenow.com website as well.
This book is a must read... be prepared to rethink all your habits and make a real lifestyle change!

Serious measures for a serious subject -- written with humor
You can get a bit of a shock from this book, but you really need to know the material presented here. It's a matter of life or death. This book covers subjects like parasitic infestation (yes , it's possible), flatulence and digestive problems, constipation and bowel conditions, and even colon cleansing procedures.

Jordan says the increase in cancer rates along with our polluted environment and the additives in our food all make colon cleansing -- indeed, system cleansing -- crucial to our individual health.

Twelve medical doctors support her theories of detoxification and there are illustrations, cartoons and diagrams to emphasize points.

This really is an important book, especially if you're "of an age," for as we get older, taking extra precautions for our health becomes more and more important.

At odds with more commonly held medical preconceptions
Detox For Life by certified colon hydrotherapist and educator Loree Jordan is a superbly presented self-help guide to being good to one's colon through proper nutrition and water drinking, colonic cleansing, an appropriate exercise regimen, and the taking of beneficial herbs. The author's personal passion for colonic health shines through as she forcefully presents her program for internal cleansing. Detox For Life dares to be at odds with more commonly held medical preconceptions; the author claims that anyone who poops less than 3 times a day is constipated and exhorts 7-day fasts combined with a colonic cleansing and herbal program for overall wellness. Written with a personal touch of humor, Detox For Life is a highly recommended and potentially life-saving alternative point of view for anyone suffering from bowel problems or who wants to improve their overall health from the innards up.

Happy Birthday, Addy!: A Springtime Story (American Girls Collection (Paper))
Published in Paperback by Pleasant Company Publications (1994)
Authors: Luann Roberts Smith, Bradford Brown, Dahl Taylor, and Connie Rose Porter
Amazon base price: $5.95
Average review score:

Realistic, and yet gentle
This is another in the American Girls series about Addy Walker, a ten-year-old African-American girl living in the America of 1865. In this story, Addy makes a new friend in the form of M'dear, a kindly old African-American woman whose blind eyes see more than most. Sadly, as Addy learns more about her new life of freedom, she learns more about the racial discrimination that pervades the world around her. It's up to Addy, with M'dear's insights, to see the way forward in such a dark world.

The final chapter is a look at what it growing up was like for African-American children in the America of 1864. Once again, I must praise American Girls for producing such a wonderful book. This story sets out race relations in a no-nonsense way, but without recrimination-it is a true lesson in healing. My eleven-year-old daughter loved this book, with its realistic history and gentle lessons, and I loved it too!

Wonderful addition to children's litterature
This book continues Addy Walker's adventures after successfully escaping her plantation for freedom up North.

Addy continues to be amazed by the opportunities that are so much more broader than those on the old plantation, but also realizes that even "free" states have racial segregation and discrimination. She is no longer the property of slaveowners, but still cannot travel certain places or excercise privlleges that whites in Philadephia are able to use.

With her friend Sarah's encouragement, Addy picks out a birthday. While such an action might seem mundane by today's standards, Addy (like others during slavery) never had a day that was uniquely hers. Taking her time with the big decision, Addy ultimately picks a day that has meaning for her and indeed, the entire nation.

A Lovely Story
Addy, an escaped slave, makes a friend, and worries about segregation. When is Addy's birthday? What can she do about prejudice between blacks and whites? How can she make this birthday a happy one? And can her new friend help her? Find out in this lovely tale.

a wonderful gift for all
I just read this book last night with my son (age 9)and wanted to send it as gift to his friends as gifts (for those big boys and their family)

My son picked this book (and another one by the same author / illustrator) "Quest for the crystal Castle")at a special store in Vermont (where I was trying orgnic cotton clothings). He seemed very engrossed for a long time, and I bought both recognizing the words"peaceful worrier" (had been mentioned a few times this summer).

Last month, I myself become a fan of Dan Millman's "Sacred JOurney of a peaceful worrior". It was definitely on my list of "books that changes life". So, I was glad to read these two children version of "peaceful worrior " book with my son last night. I found it a wonderfully written children book with insight and enlightment that my son really loved. He is an avid reader and has been reading lots of great novels, yet Dan's books still inspire him to a very deep level. We both appreciate the books greatly and start thinking about giving these books as gift to his playgroup friends since babyhood.

I loved it!
I liked how the girl stood up to that bully... I could do that, say "Hey, why are you taking his lunch?!? Get your own lunch!" I liked the part about "friendship"... there was a lot in this book about "friendship". I loved it. It's my favorite book ever! - Rachel P, age 10

Creating Champions
I present motivational programs in the Detroit area schools. This book is excellent in showing that the positive actions displayed by Danny make him shine like a winner. Nothing wimpy about him! This book will become part of my CREATING CHAMPIONS program to have children see that really strong individuals don't need to use their fists to be in control of their lives! Bravo to all involved in the creation of this book. More books like this in schools could help curb some of the growing violence we're seeing.

Key HR Leadership Roles for the Future
"What does the future hold for the HR function and for HR practitioners? Many studies have been undertaken to answer this question. However, three of them stand out as being the must comprehensive: (1) the 1995-1996 Hman Resource Planning Society State-of-the-Art Study (R.Eichinger & D.Ulrich); (2) the Penn State Executive Programs Management Skills Assessment-Human Resources, which was conducted between 1985 and 1997 (A.Vicere & R.Prescott); (3) A 21st-Century Vision of Strategic Human Resource Management (W.Rothwell, S.Schechter & S.McLane). A review of tese studies shows that the HR field is on the verge of moving beyond its recently acquired responsibilities for performance consulting and business partnering to assume strategic leadership" (p.26).

In this context, W.J.Rothwell, P.K.Prescott, and M.W.Taylor review these studies as following:

I- 1995-1996 HR Planning Society State-of-the-Art Study.

1. Seven most essential skills for HR executives today:

* Business savvy and acumen

* Leading organizational change initiatives using personal power and indirect influence skills

* Deep and working knowledge of the basic HR technologies

* Global strategic thinking and planning skills

* Change management technology

* Analytical, conceptual, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills

* Financial analysis and costing skills

2. Seven most essential skills for HR executives in the future:

* Master global operating skills

* Business and financial savvy

* Strategic, visioning, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills

* Using information technology

* Deep HR technology savvy

* Change management skills

* Organizational effectiveness

II- Penn State Executive Program Mnagement Skills Assesment-Human Resources (1997)

1. Six general roles of the new HR leaders: Partner, problem solver, model manager, oracle, conduit, and change agent.

2. Most important competencies of the HR leader:

* Is committed to the success of the organization

* Acts consistently in a manner that instills trust

* Is an effective listner

* Exhibits high standards of performance

* Can manage conflict effectively

* Works effectively with other managers outside the HR function

* Recruits and selects high-quality professionals

* Communicates effectively both orally and in writing

* Understands the overall corporate mission

* Develops HR plans that are clearly linked to the mission and strategy of business units

III- A 21st-Century Vision of Strategic Human Resource Management (1995-1996): The results of the study indicate differences between the most important present and future competencies required for success by HR leaders (see pp.29-30, and Appendix 1).

Within this general framework, they write that "taken together, these three studies provide compelling evidence that HR practitioners of the future must demonstrate exemplary leadership skills if they are to be successful. For HR practitioners, it is no longer enough to be a compliance-oriented practitioner, a supportive, or even a performance consultant. Exemplary HR practitioners of the future will be leaders who are capable of demonstrating a new value-added component to their organizations by managing and developing knowledge capital. By comparing the studies (just summarized above), we can see that six key roles for HR leaders have emerged: change agent, HR strategist, business strategist, HR functional aligner, partner to general managers, and problem solver and consultant."

Highly recommended.

Crucial career heads-up for HR practitioners!
Following an initial, probing discussion of the history and present problems plaguing human resource management, the authors present a vision of a new HR function. They carry these ideas forward in terms of six trends: the advance of technology; globalization; cost containment; increasing speed in market change; the increasing importance of knowledge capital; and the overall pace and scope of change. They discuss how to apply insights about these trends to shaping and leading the HR function, specifically in terms of action plans and the requisite leadership competencies to implement these plans. The book contains work sheets for guiding professionals in action planning. Importantly, the results of research underlying the book are included. A worthy contribution to the human resource management field and something of a career heads-up for HR practitioners.

Great reference book
I have a 1997 version of this textbook. It is really wonderful for reference even after finishing the course that required it. My husband and son are using it also. It has answers in the back so you can check yourself. If you don't tear out the work sheets and just copy them, other members of you family or friends can use the book to improve their English also. It is really worth the money.

Good reference tool for any office
I am just completing a required class using this book. It takes you through our written English language by teaching how to identify each part of speech. This book also teaches correct punctuation, different kinds of phrases, and really makes you dig deep in your subconcious to remember nominative phrases, plurals, numbers used in sentences, etc... It's all the basic English in one book that a person needs for brushing up!

Configuring Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition

A useful guide for an under-documented product.
This is the first title I've seen that collects everything you need to know about Symantec Anti-virus into one organized place. The various chapters clarify information that is scattered throughout the online documentation and various mailing lists and discussion groups, and expands on those topics even further. The exercises provide wonderful step-by-step guides to perform the real-world tasks that you'll perform when installing and configuring Symantec Anti-virus on a corporate network.

Superb! Excellent coverage of NAVCE 7.6
This book tells you everything you need to know about configuring the corporate edition of Symantec AntiVirus. Chapter 1 is an intorduction to NAVCE, including information on viruses, worms, trojan horses, etc. Many of us will be able to skip this chapter, but it is well written and provides a good starting point for using NAVCE and understanding Symantec security response. It also begins covering the Symantec Product Specialist certification. Chapters 2-6 are meaty and provide information on designing an antivirus infrastructure, understanding Symantec System Center, using Central Quarantine, configuring NAVCE 7.6 servers, implementing it to client PCs, and a ton more. Chapter 7 is on upgrading and then chapters 8, 9, 10 are on more intermediate and advanced topics like securing the environment. The last few chapters are on troubleshooting, handling virus outbreaks, disaster recovery etc.

I skipped very little of this book, finding something of value in each chapter. There are notes throughout (with names like Designing and Planning and Damage and Defense). Most are helpful and provide good tips/examples. The faq's at the end of the chapters are good -- not fluff like a lot of the books I read.

There are also a lot of tutorials, numbered steps walking you through configurations. They are all easy to follow without being tedious. Overall, very very good.

The Air Combat Paintings of Robert Taylor
Published in Hardcover by Howell Pr (1998)
Authors: Robert Weston and Robert Taylor
Amazon base price: $65.00
Average review score:

The Master's Work
Those of you who know Robert Taylor's art work will know what to expect from this book. Those of you don't, then you will be treated to some superb sketches and paintings which mainly focus on World War 2 aviation scences. Taylor has an excellent eye for detail and realism and researchs his subject(s) to ensure that his paintings are more than just realistic, they are factual. In this book he talks about how some of his paintings were done, along with comments from some of his subjects such as Adolf Galland, Townsend, Johnnie Johnson etc. The book includes 24 of his paintings, including some of my favourites "Dambusters","JG-52", "Victory over Dunkirk" all of which are on good quality paper. This is a quality book which displays the master's work and the master at work and highly recommended, although some may find the price a little prohibitive.

fantasy
If you don't have the money to buy an original painting of Robert Taylor, but you want to see his works, this book is absolutly fantastic.
You can look to the prints for hours, using your fantasy how it was/is to be a combat pilot.
But, do not not expect it to be a book with a lot of prints.
This is just a selection of one of the most beautiful prints.
This is really a book you can look in from time to time and turn yourself into another fasinating world.

Robert Taylor Air Combat Paintings-Vol.1-4
This is to clarify the actual status of Taylor's Vol. 1-4 volumes of terrific aviation art.

All volumes are still available through several aviation art dealers. ( NW Aviation Art/Leisure Galleries) I do not know why Amazon lists many of these as out of print. They are NOT!

The new Volume 4 is out as of Sept. 2000.

Wish Amazon stocked them all.

The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters

This book should not be out of print!
I remember so vividly reading this book when I was in the 5th grade. While hiking with my 9 year old I was talking about this book and he can't wait to read it... if only we could find it. Help!

A Priceless Piece of Americana
Having read this book over 20 years ago, it has stuck in my memory as one of the Greats, where dozens of other titles are all but forgotten, and it is out of print?! A Pulitzer Prize winner, no less! This book needs to be available to hand down to my children and yours, and their children after them!

An Absolutely Unforgettable Read
I read this book back in the 1970's - it belonged to my Father. I found that it was absolutely rivetting, even though I could only have been about 13 at the time. I reread Jaimie McPheeters at least twice again but unfortunately, when my Father died, the book was sold along with a lot of his other personal effects. I have often wondered where I could get a copy and when I have visited the States, have endeavoured to find one - to no avail! It really is a brilliant read - I still remember some of the passages quite vividly. That 'The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters' is no longer in print is a crying shame. Would some kindly publisher please read these many and unified reviews and resurrect this great novel.
