Wonderful!
This is a wonderful book. I bought it about two months ago and loved each story. I especially loved Mrs. Hunter's short story. Mrs. Hunter was my 11th grade English teacher. Not only was she the best teacher I ever had, but she is also one of the best story tellers I have ever known. I owe my success in college writing (creative and classroom) to Mrs. Hunter! Buy this book!

A collection of stories as refreshing as a mint julep.
A friend from Alabama sent me this book, knowing how much I love Southern writers. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will pass the word. I foundh stories so intriguing I stayed up late and read every single one. Some are hilarious; others are poignant; all are well-written. I recommend doing as my friend did: Give this book to someone you love!

Excellent and varied collection of short fiction
This collection by Alabama women writers shows a wealth of talent. The stories are entertaining and provocative, with a surprise around every corner. Particularly noteworthy are the stories by Robin Allers, Sandra Conroy (wife of Pat), Loretta Cobb, Laura Hunter, Aileen Kilgore Henderson and Patricia Lou Taylor. The book is a companion volume to ALABAMA BOUND, A COLLECTION OF CONTEMPORARY ALABAMA STORIES, also published by Livingston Press, and taken together they prove that Alabama's literary talent is the equal or superior to any other state. Highly recommended!

A story of family and friends
Although this is the 4th book of the series, it actually takes place between All-of-a-Kind Family and More All-of-a-Kind Family. This story is part of the continuing tale of a Jewish family living in New York's lower East Side in the early 1900's. Although they are poor, they are rich in their love of each other and their friends. Now there is a new baby in the house and talented Ella, mischevious Henny, studious Sarah, dreamy Charlotte, and little Gertie help Mama with the baby and find friends along the way. In this book, we meet Guido, a poor Italian boy who is trying to care for his sick mother and Miss Carey, a nurse who works at the Settlement House. Through the eyes of these characters, we understand what it must have been like growing up in the lower East Side before World War I. We learn about their sorrows and their joy over the little things in life. A highly recommended book.

So real I thought I was there.
I have read All-of-a-Kind Family. It's about five little girls. Their names are Ella, Henny, Sara, Charlotte, and Gertie. This book has so much detail it feels real. One time Sara lost her library bok . She was so upset when she had to tell the library lady about it. The library lady was so nice that she said she could take out more books, but she still had to pay for the book she lost. I thought I was Sara. At the end of the book, their mother has a baby. Its name is Charley. Everyone was expecting a girl, but it was a boy. Gertie used to be the baby and did not want to be a big sister. When she sees the baby she bounces up and down because of him. Everyone was happy, Now that's an all-of-a-kind family! I Like this book a lot. It has lots of adventures. Read one page and you can't stop.

Eating, Drinking and Visiting in the South
Published in Paperback by Louisiana State University Press (1982)
Author: Joe Gray Taylor
Amazon base price: $22.50
Used price: $15.76

Informative and fun Southern history
This book focuses on domestic life in the South during the period of European settlement. It makes clear that many of the white farm families would not have survived had they not had the cooperation and instruction in practical living techniques generously provided by their native neighbors. I was amused at how many of the "Southern" traditions of food and cooking that I grew up with are really Native American traditions that were adopted by the settlers. Gray is an entertaining writer who has gathered many facts that may appear trivial, but which help to develop a detailed picture of what life was like on the frontier when the frontier was east of Atlanta.

Why This Book Is Great
I use this book with 7th and 8th grade students when doing field ecology studies. The reason I really like it is because it not only provides a closeup photograph of the leaves, wood and seeds but ALSO provides a photograph of the entire plant, as it looks to a student walking up to it. Additionally it gives data on the nutritional value to wildlife and livestock as well as native uses. Botany is a personal weakness, but I find the book easy to use. A field guide for botany bozos. Experts may like it too, but I cannot speak to that. (We use it to identify vegetation in West Texas too.)

Helping Joe Strong
Published in Paperback by Baha'i Publishing Trust (1997)
Author: Morris Taylor
Amazon base price: $

Required reading for all Spiritual Assembly members!
This book is deceptively simple; you can easily read it cover to cover in just a couple hours. It covers all the key concepts necessary for a spiritual assembly to become truly effective and states them so simply and clearly that any reader can grasp the concepts immediately.

Rather than a boring training manual, "Helping Joe Strong" is presented as a story. Joe Strong is a member of a local assembly that is having difficulty. Over a period of time he visits with various members of a neighboring LSA which has proven its effectiveness. They share their secrets for success, one after another. By the end of the story Joe Strong has taken all this information back to his own assembly and they have become effective.

This book provides a model of how an assembly can become truly effective by showing techniques in planning and organizing, forming committees, handling personal issues, and much much more.

Our assembly is currently in the process of working through the book and implementing many of the suggestions. This book should be required reading for all assembly members everywhere. If you're a member of a local assembly or may become one someday, this book is a must read!

Vitale ... a page from Barnum
I read the other reviews and feel that Joe has taken a cue from Barnum on cross-promotions and networking. Pump me and I'll pump you. Nevertheless, they're basically right. A great bio on Barnum and a effective template for professional success. I'm an advertising creative director so I can vouch for Barnum's tactics and Vitale's insights. And I'm also a teacher of the history of advertising so Joe helped me a lot in dispelling Barnum myths. He was truly ahead of his time in marketing/promotions/advertising.

A great, fun book and an easy read.

Successful business starts with this book.
P.T. Barnum was living proof that to be big you not only had to think big but you had to act big. He was the master of showmanship and Joe Vitale brought his secrets to life. If you want to know how to explode your business you have to be willing to be bold and step out of your comfort zone. This book will show you how...

Long time Barnum fan, Instant Vitale fan!
This book is an absolute must for adding to your business library. But it's more than a book it's a marketing tool kit. If you doubt that PT's techniques apply today just read page 7, Vitale's ideas on copywriting in chapter 7 should be posted above your computer every time you attempt to write.

The punch in my gut though was 'the best marketing tool on earth' which you can find on page 120. I highly recommend this book no matter what type of business or service you are marketing. Read this book with pen and paper ready...you'll need them!

The Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving

Amazon base price: $36.95

Informative yet easy reading
While the Encyclopedia of Recreational Diving is a very informative book, it is not the "heavy" reading that one might expect from a PADI manual. The terminoligy and concepts covered in this book nicely suppliment what one learns throughout the recreational diving classes -- novice open water dives, advanced techniques, underwater navigation, and rescue techniques.

I recommend this for divers who have gone through open water and advanced classes (and even Rescue), feeling that they did not get all they could out of the classes and textbook. This book is a must for those wishing to seek a professional dive rating (divemaster and higher), or pursue technical dive certifications.
