Encyclopedic!
Mary Jane Alexander, I am a New York film critic and enthusiast.

Film historian and authority James Robert Parish has done it again! "The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood," like all of Mr. Parish's well-regarded books, is comprehensive, thoroughly accurate and immensely readable. The sheer research is astounding and Mr. Parish uncovers the many fascinating tidbits that enliven film history. This is a book that is a must not only for every film and media library, but also for the general reader and film fan who wants is interested in the careers, lives and place in film history of the many ethnic stars who have thrilled us on screen. Bravo.

Also recommended: The Hollywood Songsters; Hollywood Divaas; and Hollywood Bad Boys

It's All in the Details
This is a wonderfully concise, detailed, and helpful general reference source for anyone researching ethnicity in the major films, television shows and performers of the past century. The Encyclopedia of Ethnic Groups in Hollywood is easy to read, gives only the important highlights of each title and personality, and is well-indexed. The photographs in the book are nostalgic and illustrative. It's all in here -- the breakthroughs, the award winners, the important firsts, as well as other contributions that make Hollywood history and today's Hollywood unique.

Here is an "ABOUT TIME!" book
The movies have always help guide and shape moviegoers into an an understanding of who they are, where they're from, and where they're going. But much of the vast American public has been virtually invisible on the screen -- which is why this book is so valuable. Our overlooked ethnic groups -- African Americans, Asian Americans, Hispanic Americans, Jewish Americans, and Native Americans -- now have a wonderful reference source to help them understand who they are, where they're from, where they're going. This encyclopedia may be a bit pricey for average bookbuyers (where's the cheaper paperback edition?), but it will be criminal if every library in the country doesn't make it readily available.

Modeling a Life of Faith
This little book is huge in terms of its presentation of a life lived exclusively by faith in God. It presents the life of a man who learned through the challenges and trials of 50 years of missionary outreach to inland China the faithfulness of God to supply every need. This book will touch your heart; it will challenge you with respect to your own commitment to trusting in the faithfulness of God, and it will encourage you to live by faith through the example of an ordinary man who did just that.

An example of faith.
This book refreshed my spirit. It reminded me how good God is and how all things work together for good to them that love God. This book included excerpts and stories of Mr. Taylor's exploits in China.

I was amazed at the simplicity and honesty of the writing. It included his coming to faith, his struggles as a Christian, and him abiding in Jesus Christ in different situations. During times of crisis and during times of rejoicing, the constant in Mr. Taylor's life was the faithfulness of a loving God. I was deeply moved and humbled by his life.

Whether you want to be a missionary or just wondering what God's will is for your life, this book provides insight through the example of Hudson Taylor's life. An awesome read!

A wonderful missionary book
I was impressed with not only how much Taylor loved the Chinese people. But how much he trusted God for all of the needs in his life. And all of the things he accomplished. The medical center he established. And how he trusted God for the medical supplies. An inspiring little book.

A fantastic story about life in a small town
Anyone who has ever been to a small town will be able to relate to and understand the sense of community Dr Taylor describes in his book and the impact a man like this can make. This is a book that makes you long for the days where people were judged by their deeds and there was an obligation not to just your family, but to the community as well. If you think that one person cannot make a difference, read this book.

A great story about small town life.
This is a great conversation about what life is like in a small town. Anyone who has been to this part of East Texas will appreciate the stories about how remote and isolated life use to be. The book is written in a manner that makes it a very easy read, and it is hard to put the book down.

A friend of the author
We just buried Dr Taylor here in Nacogdoches ... The pastor presiding at the funeral had a copy of Dr Taylor's book and quoted from it extensively. I had forgotten about the book until then and have recently purchased it. Buy it.

Takes PMs to the next step in their professional development
When I am asked to recommend a good book on project management I always recommend Visualizing Project Management by Forsberg, Cotterman and Mooz. That book teaches project management the right way, in my opinion, by laying a solid foundation. However, at some point you will master the material through application and experience, and you'll want to go to the next level. That is where this excellent book will take you.

As you mature as a project manager you eventually discover that the technical aspects are a great foundation, but the 'soft skills' are essential to success. The book starts with these. The author provides some excellent material on how to make effective oral and written presentations, negotiation skills and leadership.

Don't get the impression that this book does not cover technical material. It does, and it goes pretty deep into some advanced techniques. For example, the author provides a very comprehensive discussion of work breakdown structures (WBS) and how to develop them. In my opinion the biggest failure of projects is the fact that a WBS is never developed before the estimating and scheduling is performed. I really liked the network analysis chapter. It presented in clear prose how to risk-adjust a critical path, which is something I learned over a decade ago, but am met with blank stares when I mention this to most project manager. Indeed, most project managers don't know what a critical path is (they use the term often enough, they just don't know what it means), much less how to perform a critical path analysis. This book will provide this information and a few easy-to-learn techniques as well. I thought that the chapter on earned value was adequate. I was glad to see it included in the book and give the author credit for his comprehensive treatment, but I almost fell asleep here. I recommend that serious project managers augment the earned value knowledge in this book with Earned Value Project Management, 2nd Edition by Quentin Fleming and Joel Koppleman. That book was written by authors who developed the 32 earned value criteria for the Project Management Body of Knowledge (2000 version).

The part of the book that covers managing a project is filled with great advice. I thought the chapter on project selection was particularly valuable because it is objective and based on financial formulae that should be applied to these kinds of decisions. The sample reports are also good templates that should be in every project manager's tool kit.

Overall, this book will give a seasoned project manager much sound advice and provide him or her with an array of advanced techniques. It is truly a project manager's survival guide earning it a solid five stars and a place on the list of the handful of books that I always recommend.

Good introduction to project management.
This book is exactly what I was looking for. I took a Project Management Course back in College, but did not remember much of it. I needed a book that would give the basics of this subject, without being too involved in particular software.

This book does exactly that, and also lists some of the most frequent pitfalls for projects, with half the book emphasizing the human side of Project Management.

Read it and SURVIVE!
An excellent "survey" book on project management. It will be especially useful to new-comers to project management, both individuals and companies. Unlike other books, it shows how to adapt to the realities around you, rather than jumping a rigid "analytical" approach. His emphasis on the human element is refreshing.

Excellent and thorough, very good tool for ESL classes.
I bought this book for my class of Latin American students who were learning English as a second language. The grammar exercises in this book were well-written and accurate, and the organization of the material into short chapters makes it easy to teach this material in a classroom. This book was an excellent resource because it explains the concepts in Spanish, which makes the experience more familiar and less overwhelming for the students. A few words of advice - this material is somewhat advanced, so those who have never studied grammar formally (e.g., some of my students had quit school in their 8th grade) may struggle a little with some of the concepts (e.g., what is an adjective). Also, if you are an ESL teacher, you should also be able to read Spanish if you want to use this book, since it explains the concepts in Spanish. I enjoyed this book since it made teaching easy - I needed only about 15 min. of preparation time before each class when I was teaching one of these chapters. Finally, if you are teaching an ESL class, I recommend you use at least one additional book for the purpose of learning vocabulary and practicing pronunciation, since this book really only covers grammar.

Excellent
I am very pleased with my purchase. I am trying to learn english. And my professor encouraged me to buy this book. She is a very nice teacher although a little too funny at times, but aren't all language teachers that way. This book provides all the grammar rules I need to know to write good sentences and to read well and yes sometimes soon to speak well in sentences to. Thank you.

No puedes pedir mas por el precio!
Este libro te ayuda a entender la gramatica del lenguaje Ingles y te ayuda a poder hablarlo y escribirlo mejor. Is one of the best tools anyone can have when learning to speak or better english skills.

A MUST READ!!
An exciting biography of how God can work in the life of a committed person. It will certainly redefine the word sacrifice for you.

An Inspiration, and a guide
I thank God for having allowed me to read this book and strongly urge you to read it as well! Many times I remember tears gently flowing out of my eyes as I could see God through this wonderful testimony which exhorted me, encouraged me, and led me. I strongly believe that it was God's seal of approval upon this man's life that made such a book be printed. I am praying to translate this book into Spanish as I hope many more will also have the opportunity of reading such LIFE of the Gospel.

In Christ, J. Hernandez julioh@goodnews.or.kr

This is a story about a man who changed lives
I read this book with tears. Sometimes, the emotional impact was so much that I had to stop reading and pull myself out of it. James Hudson Taylor was one of the first missionaries who were willing to identify themselves with Chinese people, just as Jesus identify Himself with human. The author described honestly about Mr. Taylor's stregths and weaknesses, successes and mistakes, and his spiritual journey with God. A worth to ready biography.

Enough detail to be interesting; coherently written
I read this book on the 'plane from Seattle to Chicago a week or so ago. Given the period '89-'98 that the book covers, I was pleasantly surprised to see the included material on project 'Tempest' (Discovery II) released in 1999.

The author clearly had personal contact with many of the Landrover engineers and project staff for all three Discovery projects, and this added immensely to the value.

Much of the material is apparently leveraged from earlier magazine articles which likely helped it be factually accurate based on Land Rover staff available when the article was first published.

Thoroughly recommended for the Land Rover fan.

A Classic
It is about the "old" Discovery (1989-1998) and James Taylor is probably the best person to tell us the story of this great vehicle. Every Discovery owner must have a copy of this book to understand the project evolution since 1989, with good information about its changes along those years (engines, gear boxes, electronics etc). There are good tips for those who want to buy a good second hand Discovery. In the end, Taylor describes the "New Discovery" project launched in 1999.

Great info for Disco owners
If you own a Discovery, irrespective of the country you are in, you will get a lot of info from this book. The Author has researched it well, and covers all the issues I wanted to know about my vehicle. Some of the photos are great, I esp. like the convertible model - a shame they were never put that one into production - I want one of those! This is not a technical manual as such, but it still has a lot of facts & figures. It is also helpful if you are considering options from other models and want to see what they look like. I have an ES model, but would like to get the factory wheel arch flares, and I know what they would look like... Recommended for a Discovery or Land Rover enthusiast, or if you intend to purchase one and want to do your research.

The "other" Hoppenfeld text
Most orthopaedic surgeons are aware of Hoppenfeld's Anatomical Exposures text...this is the other one, which is just as important and helpful for the general or specialist orthopod. For residents who often are in a quandary regarding routine followup and rehabilitation goals with regards to patients, this paperback proves invaluable. Chief residents who often run clinics will find this as an excellent tool for evaluating the progress of their patients postop. Another excellent text with self explanatory illustrations and photographs.

THANK YOU , Professor Stanley Hoppenfeld.

Rime of the Ancient Mariner

A Beautiful Bargain
This is an incredible book, a collaboration, really, featuring reproductions of the wood engravings that were created by Gustave Dore in 1875, inspired by this epic poem by Samuel Coleridge. (the editorial reviews are confusing, because they describe books by different artists) There are 42 magnificent illustrations, on 9 x 12 pages no less, for just six bucks and change. You won't find a better bargain here.

Exquisite!

This small volume is a treasure. In hardcover, the pages are silver, the dark blue typography is a beautiful old-style Roman, perhaps Garamond or Times, good-sized and leaded out for easy readability. And the illustrations are unsurpassed.

First, the illustrator: Gustave Dore was born in 1832, sixty years after the birth of Coleridge. He died in 1883. Coleridge preceded him in death by 49 years. Coleridge was born in 1772 and died in 1834. Dore was born in Strasbourg, and was a renowned illustrator who was doing lithographs at the age of thirteen.

The fact that Dore was a near contemporary of Coleridge is important because we can be assured that the characters' costumes in his illustrations reflect the actual dress of the time Coleridge was describing. The ships also are correctly drawn and beautifully detailed.

To say that his illustrations complement this classic epic poem is an understatement.

As to the poet, some wag said once of The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, that "a half-great poet had a wholly great day." I have also heard that Coleridge is supposed to have written his epic in one sitting, in a great burst of inspiration. I can't vouch for that, but it is truly a masterpiece--of that there can be no doubt.

I recall trying to memorize it when I was in high school, about sixty years ago. I loved it then, and I still do now.

For the price, this book is an absolute steal. No library is complete without this poem, and of all the renditions I've seen of it, this is by far the most beautiful.

"Water, water everywhere...
And all the boards did shrink. Water, water, everywhere, nor any drop to drink." These famous lines, like the opening lines of Coleridge's Kubla Khan, are often quoted, but I sometimes wonder if the people who quote them have read this wonderful poem. The poem is full of mystery and horror, from the Mariner stopping the wedding guest, to the incident w/ the albatros, to the gambling of Death and Death-In-Life... I could go on and on. The language is so rich, and the poet's comments make the content more clear for anyone who becomes confused. The illustrations of this edition are beautiful and definately complement the text. This is a haunting poem that you will want to read again and again. If you have not read it before, do yourself a favor and find a copy.

Peace, be still, and know that I am God.
As a result of many questions of our Pastor, in Weatherford Texas,Does God still speak to us? He prepared a series of sermons entitled "Listening to God", and the numerous ways He speaks. The reference Book he recomended was HIPPO IN THE GARDEN.
I would recomend to anyone searching for a closer walk with the diety of your choosing. listen for God and be blessed.

Wonderful book for those unsure seekers who long for God.
I read this book when I found a copy in the library of our campus ministry "LifeHouse" here at East Central University in Ada. I was all but blown away by the fact that Ryle, rather than being a dispensationalist (i. e. "Miracles and anything supernatural from God passed away when the apostles died"), not only affirms the fact that God, as the all-powerful Creator, can speak to us any way He wants--but he also presents a hope so wildly powerful it made me temporarily short of breath to think about: GOD _WANTS_ TO SPEAK TO _US!_ That realization ignited a hunger in me that has only intensified as the weeks have passed. To make a long review short--get this book and read it. You won't regret what lies beyond its back cover!

Hippo does not dissapoint!
What a unique an excellent book "Hippo" is! If you have ever heard James Ryle in person, he speaks like he writes, in an amusing, simple yet profound manner. That is exactly how he comes across in this book. He tackles a very, very difficult subject with story, witt, and lots of scripture (that is very appreciated). Most of the contents of this book came as a fresh breeze of new insight. How very much we as Christians need to allow God to be God in our lives and speak to us how He sees fit! This is what this book addresses and succeeds at relaying. That's why I highly recommend this book to you if you are looking for fresh insight to having a one-on-one relationhip with God. For, God does speak today, in a variety of ways! What is He saying to you?
