A needed boost
I have to admit that this book came along at the right time for me--in the middle of a bad run of rejection slips and self-esteem to match. With this book Taylor managed to get me jacked up to send out stuff again with chapters like "How to Make Editors Beg For It"--the first time I had read about what really goes on in editorial offices where we freelancers send out stuff. I feel like Taylor's insider stuff gives me an edge I didn't have before.

The chapter on queries and titles taught me how I have to pay more attention to actually selling my writing with right-between-the-eyes headlines. Taylor talks a lot about getting inside the editor's head and discovering the "reader benefits" that editor is trying to deliver. As he says, freelancers have to play that radio station: WRIT-FM or "What's Really In It-For Me," because without good reader benefits the piece is dead before it ever hits the editor's desk.

I guess all in all, reading books like this is necessary to learn new tips and keep motivated and fresh. This book did all that and more so that's why I rated it high.

The Freelance Success Book
This is a great book to read even if you are NOT a writer trying to sell articles. There is plenty of good advice for college students trying to get through their core English courses as well as for students of technical writing. Every college library should have a copy. Ms. Smith, the mean English teacher, gives this book five stars.

Writing coach in a book
I've been out of the writing scene for too long now, and after some soul searching and internet searching I found the book to lead me back to a life of writing.
The first chapter deals with the "writing itch" and what to do about it. So many times I have tried to get back into writing but without proper discipline and resources I ran out of motivation. This book explains how to organize and approach this whole thing realistically and professionally.
And that's just the beginning. I see myself returning to the book again and again like a dictionary. Let's face it. The writing game is multi-faceted and David Taylor's book delves deep into the business and creative realm of writing.
I've read a lot of books on writing. What's different about this book is David Taylor clearly explains how to go from just a glimmer of desire to a paycheck. I encourage anyone with a passion for writing to grab a copy of "The Freelance Success Book." Not only will it be your personal writing coach, the book will inspire you.

Good Dog, Good Dog Book
I bought this when I acquired my first dog ten years ago. It has been pretty indispensable and unbarkably good. OK, so I didn't refer to it each of those ten years, but for people and kids and families just welcoming or planning to welcome a dog into their family, this is a good all-in-one book.

It has a section on different breeds to help match up your choice with your lifestyle/personality. It has a section on how to pick out a puppy. A picturesque, simplified, step-by-step guide to training the basics, a little first aid, and everything in between. For a comprehensive all-in-one book this one can't be beat. If you want to go deeper into home treatment, or advanced behavioral training, I would suggest you augment.

Ten years ago I bought this book and a Yellow Lab/Golden Retriever mix, Hamlet. He passed away today and was the most phenomenal dog around. I'd like to attribute part of that to this book, but I'd have to say he'd have probably been the same regardless of David Taylor's excellent book. It did help along the way though. I'll be picking it up again to do some puppy hunting in some month's time. 5 barks from me. Woof, woof, woof, woof, and...WOOF!

A must-have book
This book is outstanding. Buying any other book on dog care -- except for professional literature -- is a waste of money.(Ditto for his cat care book).

This book has been translated into lots of languages (including Hebrew), which comes as no surprise. I think I have given more than 2 dozen copies of this book away to everyone from families, children and first time pet owners to veterinarians, zoology students and other professionals.

As a animal welfare professional with an extensive library, this is the book I turn to first -- and often don't have to look any further.

Excellent general guide for families with a dog.
A consise discussion of breeds, care, preventative health, and health problems. The author has also done an equivalent work for cats "You & Your Cat", just as good. Only a vet will need more information than you find here, and after scoping out the pets section at our local Borders (the flagship store in Ann Arbor MI), we chose the cat version of this book. The dog version is just as good.

Well Written
Very well written. A lot deeper than most sci-fi books. Excellent character development and side plots. Very entertaining.

Magical and insightful!
Contact With Gaia contains so many imaginitive scenarios and insightful character descriptions that I could not help but be amused and charmed throughout. This book takes the reader to unexpected planes of reality and thought in which beliefs are challenged and perspectives made new. Throughout the novel are metaphors that will make you re-think your priorities, the wonder of children, and human relationships to the earth itself.

Contact with Gaia
This is a brilliantly woven sci-fi novel proposing the possibility of the Earth as being a living, breathing entity. Johnny Trevasser is a teacher/musician trying to find a balance in his life between the struggles of teaching ESOL (English Speakers of Other Languages) at Green Pastures Elementary, developing a relationship with his girlfriend, and composing symphonic/rock tunes in a band with his buddies. During his struggle Johnny becomes aware through a number of eerie encounters that the everyday stressors in his life may be very insignificant when thinking about the world in a universal capacity. Is there a possibility of life in forms other than what we know already exist? Are we just a small piece of the larger puzzle? Could the planet Earth actually be alive? Taylor keeps the reader involved through detailed character development as well as a roller coaster trip through his wild imaginary thought process. *****

Truly Complete, User Friendly, Too
I have nine cats and I also do rescue work with stray and feral cats so I really appreciate all of the useful and easily accessible advice and information in this wonderful book. It was written by a leading British veterinarian and the differences in national attitude toward cats is evident and rather interesting (I prefer the more humane British outlook.)
The book contains virtually everything one needs to know to choose and care for a domestic cat as a pet. There is a thorough section with beautiful photographs of all the different breeds, coat and color variations. There is ample information on grooming, feeding and nutrition and everyday care. It has unique diagnostic charts that show how to spot signs of illness and gives practical ideas for first aid and home care as well as advice on when to call the vet. It has a really great section on pregnancy and kitten care. The information in this book enabled me to save the life of a first born kitten born to an inexperienced queen that was abandoned by the confused young mother and left to get very cold and weak. I immersed it up to its neck in a bowl of warm water and massaged it according to the book's directions and "Lazarus" went on to become a very beautiful long-haired charcoal gray cat with four white socks, a plump and happy family pet. When my husband first found him laying on the kitchen floor he thought the kitten was already dead.
This book is chock-full of good advice that is well-indexed and easy to locate. It covers every aspect of a cat's health and life including feline personality and behavior. There are many good books on cat care and I've read a great many of them but this one is still my favorite and has given me the most help in understanding and caring for these delightful animals.

The Incredible Molly Brown
If it wasn't for this book, The Incredible Molly Brown (our feline), would not be alive today! It was the information contained in the pregnancy process and kitten care sections, that gave us the knowledge to take on a little more than we wanted (smiles). Great addition for any cat owner.

Crammed with info for curious cat carers!
This book has been my Bible for the past three months, which is when I adopted my Himalayan kitten, Jessica. I have enjoyed David Taylor's zoo stories books for years and when I found that he had written this book on cat care I was very relieved. This is the first time I have lived with a cat and I have constantly referred to this book to help me with my kitten. 'You and Your Cat' is easy to read and has all the practical help on how to care for your cat, as well as industry tidbits on feline history and trivia. I especially liked the section at the back which has an easy to read table on feline illnesses, preventions and cures.

a wild ride
I first stumbled across David Taylor's book in the library when I was a child who had just devoured James Herriot's beloved stories, and was thirsting for more books centered on animals and the practice of veterinary medicine. I was particularly intrigued by Taylor's book since he was part of a medical career that many people rarely stop to think about, and after reading his book I was inspired to incorporate many aspects of his practice into my future dreams.

Taylor's tales of animal encounters and his dealings with these extraodinary creatures are compelling and heartfelt. While he may not completely match the idol-like status that James Herriot has held the past 14 years of my life, his books and life-stories have played a pivotal role in shaping my ambitions and the greatest loves in my life.

While most people think of veterinarians as those who look after dogs and cats, the unexpected ways of zoo veterinarians such as Taylor have made a considerable impact on our society today that we cannot fail to recognize. Through this book Taylor has allowed us a glimpse into the drama of dealing with these creatures that we are less-than-familiar with, and throughout, consistently reminds us that we must possess a love and respect for all things wild. A definite must-read.

Zoo Vet
This is the best book I read. David Taylor sure did a simply perfect job. I would give it more than 5 stars if I could.

A Zoo Vets Life...
The title of this book explains most of it, a vet who handles wild zoo animals. It covers the problems a vet encounters when taking care of non domestics animals, and also mentions how various people feel about animals in general. David Taylor also discusses what it took to learn all the various workings of the animals. The stories are very good, such as the one where David gets a ride from a monkey on a motocycle! (it's been a while since I've read it, I know it wasn't a MONKEY but something close...) I liked this book a lot, it gives a very interesting insite about zoo's and how the animals are taken care of.

very useful and intersting
I travelled Corsica with a rented car. The book gave me almost all I needed - information about the atractions, historical background, cultural interesting articles, and tips about hotels etc... The tourist information offices know very little how to help tourists - with this book they are almost not needed.

You have no other choice - buy it!
How many other guides to Corsica aimed at independent travellers, written in English can you name? Yes, Corsica is covered in each and every guide to France as well, but those 20 or so pages in a 500-pages book aren't what you really want, are they? It would be unfair to say though that Corsica: The Rough Guide is the best one simply because it's also the only one -- both the authors and the editorial staff has done a pretty decent job on this one. Recommended.

Thorough and Educational
Interiors is a complete review of the interior design process. It covers lighting, furniture, fabric, wall treatments, and more. What makes this book so versatile is it's flexibility in being able to be used by someone interested in the profession, as well as those just casually interested in design. If you're building a new home, redecorating your current home, or interested in exploring the profession this book will prove incredibly helpful. It will give you the vocabulary and the how-to for going about a number of design problems. I would actually recommend the newer addition (which is more up-to-date), but can't write the review in that space yet.

Interiors:An Introduction
We are using this book in the interior design class. I think it's good textbook for me. I can learn history of interior by this book.

Highly recommended
In over 20 years as a Christian, this is the best devotional I have ever read. It is thought provoking yet keeps the subject simple. Each day gives you something to ponder and the chronological order also puts a different approach on the gospels and Jesus' life. I would recommend it to anyone. In fact, I am buying several more as gifts for friends and family.

Great book to improve your walk with Christ
This is a great book for family devotionals. As a Christian it is all too easy to forget that others of whome have not yet given their lives to Christ don't really understand the 'Good News'. ONE YEAR with Jesus, is a compilation of the teachings and actions of Jesus. It is a concentrated form of the Gospel. It can effectively demonstrate to those that might be on the fence, the perfect love of Jesus, which is is the only thing that I think wins converts.

genuine, hilarious, tragic, hopeful
real life american story of a lost child who was swept up in the compelling 1960's. dallas taylor's honest, revealing story tells what it was like to be a part of history - to experience the tragic/ comical reality of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll -- to suffer and battle his personal daemons and to survive drug addiction and an organ transplant. God Bless Dallas Taylor.

My Dads Last Best Friend
I should begin this review with a little info for anyone who should read this.I read the name Dallas Taylor for the first time when I was about 10 years old,I was reading a name off an old 45 single of the songs Hitch Hike and Papas got a brand new bag.I always wanted to know who this guy was and how to get a hold of him. Well, now i know who he is,or was, but I still dont know how to get a hold of him. This book taught me a lot of the man who last knew my father before he died, and I even found a few pages dedicated to the last moments of his life.I thought I knew about the sixties but this book showed me how little I really knew. Many people who have had problems with drugs or alcohol in there lives will benifit greatly from this book.I hope you all will take the time to read this book.It will help you understand things a little bit better and introduce you to my dads last best friend.

Outstanding storytelling!
The Well by Mildred D. Taylor is one of the best examples of juvenile fiction that I have read in the last ten years. (Coming from a teacher, that's a lot of books!) The reader is invited into a world where whites can say and do as they please and blacks are treated to cruelty, deceit and humiliation. Yet the Logan family, the central characters of this book, maintain their strength and dignity through it all. The Logan property sits on the only well that has not run dry in this turn-of-the-century tale of the Deep South. They are generous people and share their sweet water with all their neighbours, even the bigotted Simms clan. David Logan, the narrator, tells us how he and his brother Hammer cope with the abuse and terrors inflicted upon them by the Simms boys and their evil father, Old Man McCallister Simms. This short novel tells us much about the deep seated racism that was so much a part of that time and place. The characters are quickly and clearly brought to life, the setting is vividly drawn and despite the frequent - but historically accurate use of the N word - this book is a great "read aloud."

Book Review : The Well
The Well is a very compelling and resonant book by Mildred D. Taylor, the Newberry Award winner for Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry. You will experience many emotions while reading this book, which are not limited to anger and sadness .The Well is set in the south during the mid 1910's, a time in which deep-rooted racism is practiced and where whites can do and say anything they please with abandon to blacks.
David Logan tells a poignant story of his boyhood in Smallsville, Mississippi when blacks could be hanged for considering themselves as equals to whites. The Logan family, the main characters in the book, are among few black families to own land. During an awful drought, they have the only well of sweet water in the whole town of Smallsville. The author eloquently describes how the Logan's believe that the water is not theirs to hoard but gods gift to share with black and white folks alike. Everyone is grateful to the Logan's except the white Simms family who hate being obliged to blacks. David's family lives by his father's words, 'use your head not your fists' but his insubordinate hotheaded brother Hammer is sick of the constant degrading of Charlie Simses and when Charlie pushes his handicapped brother with bitter rancor to the ground, Hammer reacts and does the unthinkable.
The characters are quickly and clearly brought into life, the setting is vividly drawn despite the frequent but historical use of the N word. The large cast of characters is masterfully individualized with opinions, beliefs, personalities and ways of life. I personally gained tremendous admiration for Mildred D. Taylor as an author for making such a luring plot seem so stupendous in a small book.

Alex's review - his point of view - 9years old
I think Mildred D. Taylor is a good writer. She makes her books inspiring to most people. I like her books a lot because it is really interesting and talks about history and has good contrasting in the story. Her book tells you how people lived back in the olden days. Mildred writes a series of religious tales not just one book. Her books sound lifelike and it is easy to picture the story in your head. Her book makes me want to read more of the tales because they are so interesting. This book makes me wonder what it was like back then and WOW I'd like to be there. The charectors have good charectoristics. The story has a great conclusion. I'm inspired to learn more about the history back then. Her book has a sensitive plot that a person can understand.
