Monster Mary, Mischief Maker
I have fond memories of this book. My father first found the book for me in our local library and on almost every return trip, I renewed the book. This book deals with the childhood association of not fitting in anywhere. In the book, Mary is belittled and told basically since she is not like the rest of the monsters, she is a nobody. Mary then reacts by causing problems for the others until one day she gets upset enough and leaves. She travels up into the mountains where she meets the makers of snowflakes. They take her in without any prejudices and teach her how to make the snowflakes. Mary is so excited because there is finally something she is good at. When it comes time for her to leave, the snowflake makers are sad, but make her a special snowflake which they put on a string for her to wear around her neck. This way, whenever she feels sad or inadequate she can look at the snowflake and know she is someone special too. This book is good for children because it shows that all individuals have a special talent, even if they don't know what it is at first. Never give up hope because everyone is special in their own way.
