It helps you understand what divorced kids are going through
This is a really interesting book, it expains what young children go through when there parents get divorced. I think it could help a lot of young kids when they have to through this. I think any parent who is cruel enough to make the child decide which parent to live with at the age of 13 or any age is wrong and they don't deserve to have that child either. It should never be put upon a child to decide what parent he should live with how could child make that descion, he/she would think well if I don't choose dad he'll be mad, but if I don't choose mom, she'll be mad at me. How could any child make that decsion, I think that this book could really help kids with divorced parents and it would probably help divorced parents too.

Understanding Survival via a Trap
Learning about the process of survival in the animal kingdom is part of understanding the cycles of life and death as Ellie learns in this well crafted coming of age story. Ellie is revengeful when the coyotes kill her beloved pet cat, but when the trap she helps set injures a stray dog instead, Ellie begins to understand how all animals function in our world. Set in New Mexico, Talbert's cinematic description evokes the vitality of the story. This is a powerful story for those who love animals and nature.

Dead Birds Singing-Beautifully Now
I just read this book for a book report on Teen Realilistic fiction. I'm only in 6th grade and you may think I'm too young to know a good book, but It's all about a boy who has to cope with living with his friend when his mother and sister is hurt in a car crash. It will never leave my mind.

help for the wounded soul
I read this book in middle school and it has never left my memory. This book looks at a young boy as he tries to cope with the death of his mother and sister who were killed in a car crash on their way home from his swimming meet.

This book looks at grief in pratical terms, a lense in which we unconciously fail to see grif and suffering through.

I would recomend this book to any child who has lost someone!

Heart of a Jaguar: The Review
I think that Heart of a Jaguar is a very good novel. There are only a few places that it could be improved. Especially in the fight of the bachelors, it was a bit too gruesome. The violence in the fight could have definitely been removed. Even though that probably happened in the Maya civilization, Marc Talbert did not have to include it in the book.
Heart of a Jaguar was a very vivid book, especially in the dreams of a young boy. Marc Talbert was able to create a very real story that was very clear and plausible (within the Mayan empire). The ending was very detailed also though it was expected.
The author's note in the beginning sets the scene of the story very well. The book takes place two days away from the collapsed Mayan city. The book is written about the 1200s in the Post-Classic Mayan period. It greatly develops the story of the novel and prepares you for this excellent book.

Heart of a Jaguar By Marc Talbert

"It's literally heart stopping"-Lydia

By Lydia
I think that Heart of a Jaguar is a good novel. It tells the tale of a boy, Balam, waiting to become a man. When a drought plagues his village, everyone tries to bring rain. However, the rituals are a bit sordid, so I would recommend this to mature readers.
This book depicts what happened in the Post-Classic period of the Mayas. Rituals in the book are not made up, but quite real. Mark Talbert did a good job of studying and preparing for the book. He was well ready to write the book.
The author's note is helpful because it sets the location, two days away from Chichen Itza. However, the tone buttered you up. This was a good book, but could have had a few lighter points.

Culture Shock Turns Deadly
Tom is such a cool dude that he hates vacationing with the fam. Somehow the market in Mexico explodes with violence and one boy's family rescue Tom and his sis. Hard to believe these people can be so nice to such an arrogant yahoo, but eventually Tom learns that just because things aren't the way they were back home doesn't mean these people don't have integrity, grit and real compassion. Kidnapping, blackmail and a scary turn in jail are enough to teach humility to any one.
