Heartbreakingly good
A collection of pieces ranging from brilliant little essays to recollections about Gossage. While much of the material overlaps and reprises itself, it's entirely worth reading. Will make you wish you could have been a maverick creative in the Iron Age of advertising.... and one of the few advertising books to elevate itself beyond its subject matter. It's a great resource for creating, period.

An entertaining history of a really strange man and his time
Bruce Bendinger has done a real service to advertising by putting this book together. Not only does it give Gossage the attention he deserves, it gives us a capsule social history of a very interesting time. And it's full of little nuggets like this: In addition to introducing Marshall McLuhan to the world, Gossage bought him a decent pair of black socks so that Professor M could show up to a speaking engagement without looking like a rube. An interesting time to be in San Francisco and to be in advertising. If you care at all about advertising, you'll find this book fascinating.

Read this last...
Read every other book about advertising creative before you read this book, because "The Book of Gossage" will spoil all those other books for you. They just won't be as inspiring, or even as interesting.

Gossage was a fascinating man, with a fascinating life, who did incredible advertising.

Must read.

Changing tomorrow
This book could create a more secure future for us all by empowering tomorrows adults, ( today's children ) with financial freedom.
An excellent read.

Building Tomorrows Future with Todays Money
This review will be short and sweet. I my opinion the author hit the nail on the head. They simply wrote the easy true about the importance of teaching young kids how to save money today for their future goals. It show them how to save without going without today. They will notice all the things they can still have while watching their future money grow geometrically.
Most of us know how kids feel about the here and now, "I have to have it now". This book teaches them how they can have both. Great book for such a small price.

Complex Material Made Simple
This book takes a complicated subject and explains building wealth in simple terms. It is easy to understand and practical. It does not try to impress with complex theory and information. It gives specific ideas and examples of how anyone can, using a consistent and disciplined approach, build real wealth for their children and families. The best solutions are often those that seems almost too easy - but these are often the strokes of genius that change our lives. This book and its methods and ideas are in this category. What a bargain! What a program!

Step Right Up, Folks!
Carnival fans and amusement park historians alike will delight in the many beautiful images of a dying breed - the small travelling carnival and family owned amusement parks. Mr. Brouws takes us up close and behind the scenes, and the many nighttime photos of the midway's dazzling lights are worth the price of admission alone. Mr. Caron's colorful commentary is definitely not your usually tepid "guided tours" that so many other amusement industry books offer, with wild insights and historic tidbits that are sure to amuse. Many never before seen photos appear from other photographers personal archives, bringing a rich sense of tradition to the subject at hand.
The final chapter is dedicated to San Francisco's Playland. Mr. Brouws takes a look back at the Playland of his childhood, echoing sentiments from any of us who have spent their afternoons strolling along those tawdry but always fascinating midways of yesterday. We see the peeling paint, the crooked games with cheap prizes, the worn out rides and run-down fun house. But we also realize why these places captivated us, the simple, carefree fun these places held for us for just a few days each summer. The few photos he did take (with his first camera) before the park disappeared combine with his childhood tales to add the perfect epilogue to this colorful story.

Personal sacrifice and the quest for reunion
If you are interested in the reunion of East and West, then this book will be of much interest to you! I was reminded of Jaroslav Pelikan's outstanding book, "Confessor Between East and West" while I read Beshoner's account of Ivan Gagarin.

I'll quote from the conclusion to let you know where the author goes with his thesis and then you can decide if you would like to read his supporting chapters. I personally do not agree with Garagin's belief that Roman Catholicism would bring Russia its political and intellectual "salvation", but I am greatly drawn to his commitment to his ideals. Moreover, any book that even promotes the agenda of reunion, in spite of the motives, is worth noting. Enjoy!

"Personal contact with the West and the influence of such thinkers as Schelling, Chaadaevm, Ancillon, and Joufffrey led Gagarin to the conviction that Russia's social and political backwardness was directly attributable to its separation from Catholicism. By following the Byzantine Empire into schism from Rome, Russia had separated itself from the mainspring of Western social and intellectual progress; in turn, the subjugation of the Russian Church to Russian secular authority became inevitable. Garagin, therefore, reasoned that church union reattaching Russian to Catholicism would restore Russia to social and intellectual parity with the West. Seeking the best means of personally fostering this union, he joined the Society of Jesus. Gargin's choice was costly. He lost the right to visit Russian and his family; he lost his inheritance; and he suffered decades of calumny- all to save the homeland that rejected him."

Great intro to VRML
Although I have some previous programming experience (2 C++ classes in college), I'm usually able to grasp the basic concepts pretty easily. This book is no exception, but it certainly isn't related to C++ or anything like that, so it really is like starting from the beginning to me. But it was still easy to grasp the concepts (so far anyway, I'm only about 1/3 through the book) and apply them following the author's exercises. CosmoPlayer (the VRML plugin for your browser) is in version 2.1 now (the book's CD includes version 1.0) so a visit to cosmo software would be good. Also, they make WYSIWYG editors for VRML, so don't think that you won't be able to write VRML just because you can't remember all the code - I assume it's like a 3D Studio Max interface.

The only reason I didn't give this book 5 stars is because the author seems to assume you completely understand everything the very first time he explains it to you. I've had to go back and re-read several sections so that I could understand something later in the book, but I suppose if he kept explaining concepts over and over again then the book would be twice as long. Great book if you're interested in the VRML world.

A very good book for VRML 2 Programmer
This was my first book for VRML2. Although I do lots of graphics programming in C/C++ and Open GL, I am sure that this book will be equally easy for those who want to start web 3D programming. If you know java script then this can be a good guide for VRML scripting. I would like to thank the author for his work. I did my entire project on VRML with the help of this book only ...

An excellent all round VRML reference book
I have read alot of the web3d/vrml books over the years, and this book is the best one I have read so far. The book starts with easy to understand concept and example to show you what VRML can do, and what VRML is possible. It is suitable for both beginner and advance users. The complimentary CD-ROM is very helpful and is a great time saver for anyone who wants to use the example and script in the book. This is the best VRML book I have read so far.

Solid Information
I am an Instructor of Esthetics, and I have also had the privilege of working withJeffrey Bruce during the 1980's.
While the book's photos and colors may be a bit dated, the information and how-to's in this book are timeless.
Perfect for the woman who needs easy to understand instructions, step by step guidance, all with a delightfully
devilish sense of humour.
Well worth the read.

Cheque Mate: The Game of Princes

Excellent coverage of the subject
Baker takes a religious point of view to the events of the past 200 years and in doing so sheds light on the moral inconsistencies of our present world and reveals what he has learned over the years about what is happening to us. His evaluation of events in the US during the last 50 years is quite insightful.

Detail is excellent and overall the book is accurate and consistent with other references on this subject with only minor exceptions when Baker refers mater-of-factly to events in Germany during WW2 of which he obviously has no first hand knowledge and is grossly misinformed.

The strongest part of the book is Section II - The Adversary wherein Baker goes into detail about those behind the "New World Order" and it's secret agenda.

The weakest part of the book is the Section IV - The Final Move - Cheque Mate wherein Bakers conclusions carry an overt religious message and can not be taken literally.

The Nightmares on Elm Street Parts 1, 2, 3: The Continuing Story - A Novel

1 and 2 are great. Pity about 3
The first three Nightmare on Elm Street films in book form. The first two are excellent and you really feel you know the characters whose backgrounds are explored nicely.

But what happened to the novelising of Part 3? It starts off well but most of it bears no resemblance to the film at all and seems just an underdeveloped mish-mash. Very disappointing.

The feeble novelising of Part 3 barely deserves one star, but the novels of the other two make this publication on not to miss. And there are some nice photos from the films.

Religion and Popular Culture in America
Published in Paperback by University of California Press (2000)

Amazon base price: $21.95

A Religious Experience?
This text, which is , in fact an anthology of academic papers on the topic of religion(s) and popular culture is limited by the fact that it only deals with the United States while claiming to deal with America? Other than this, however the essays are for the most part informative, intelligent and lucid in an easily accessible diction and content. Not being a huge fan of abstract theoretical constructions myself, I found the articles well-organized and significant in their content. At the same time, the extensive annotated bibliographies that accompanied each article were useful for myself in tracking down relevant data with regards to the articles about the internet, Pale Rider and Rap music and would, I assume, be likewise for those interested in pursuing other subjects such as the presence of sports and religion or weight loss as a soteriological undertaking.
While I definitely feet that there is a tremendous amount to be gained from reading these articles as far as their in-depth analysis of the interrelationship between Religion and Popular Culture in the United States, I also was intrigued by the fact that. The editors of the volume as well as the vast majority of their contributors felt compelled to support, or rather accepted as a foregone conclusion the concept that religious and popular cultures constitute two areas of thought and endeavor that are, more or less, mutually distinguishable. It seemed to me, even before reading the text, that religion is, primarily another manifestation of popular culture. One of its unique characteristics is the attempt of its supporters to construct an immutable facade which belies the extreme volatility and changeability of even its most cherished and central concepts and practices.
