At last I found a great book about Alma Tadema
Perhaps this book is the only one about Alma tadema-the greatest master of Victorian age- which deals with his life and works the way it should be. It contains a great collection of his works as high quality pictures as well as a great biography. Just buy it and see what you have missed all this time.

Perfect!
This is an excellent book - well-printed, with beautiful reproductions of Alma-Tadema's work, and well-written. Too often, art books lump Alma-Tadema generically with the pre-Raphaelites or shun him entirely (because his paintings catered to Victorian tastes). This book is almost, but not quite, too much of a good thing, with an in-depth view of Alma-Tadema's career, especially the mentors and travel experiences that shaped his style. Very early paintings and watercolor studies which I had never before seen are included, and I paticularly like the side-by-side presentation of watercolor studies with finished oils of the same scene. Alma-Tadema was a skilled artist whose lush, decorative style and atmospheric historical scenes prefigured the art of Maxfield Parrish. It's about time that a collection of this quality has become available.

Buy it before it's late
This is the best book I've ever seen about alma-tadema. Includes high quality pictures of his masterpieces. If you love Almatadema's works you should have this special book.

An Amazing Journey!
I love to travel, both physically and mentally. This book is the ultimate scenic route through Britain. I've walked down some of those lanes and stood in front of some of those old town buildings. I've shopped in some of those quaint little old shops and I've stood on some of those cliffs and looked out over the English Channel.

I use this book now mainly as a reference for sketching, but also as a reminder of all those ancient and beautiful corners of England's green and pleasant land.

I cannot recommend this visually overwhelming resource highly enough!

overpriced
I saw this exhibit in DC last week and Sargent's works were so gorgeous that it's worth your time to see it twice and wait in line. But I have to admit a great sense of disappointment in this book because many reproductions are not true to the original. The colors were not as vivid- this is really noticeable in the watercolors which were duller copies of the originals. The stories are interesting, but you can get that from other Sargent books. This book is overpriced for what it offers because you won't be able to get a sense of Sargent's brilliant colors. One good thing about this book is that it had a color reproduction of several of Sargent's works that is not available in other books. If you're looking for a better book, I suggest "Sargent Abroad."

A satisfying book
I saw this exhibit at the Tate Gallery, London. The exhibit was terrific, though something seemed lacking in the over all presentation. Sargent is one overlooked watercolorist. He is one of the greatest, on an equal or superior platform to Homer. His Valasquez like eye made him a superior artist, though he seemed to get trapped in his facile technique in society portraits. Sargent is an amazing artist. One whose personal power has always been challenged by those that believe technique is secondary. Tell that to someone who appreciates his lively beautiful brushwork and intelligent landscapes. They won't buy it! The reproductions are not second rate as stated previously. They are rather good! The essays are good reading too.

Reproductions Leap from the Pages
I found a battered and bruised copy of this collection in a bookstore and had ample time to compare the quality of the pictures with many of the highly rated, thicker Sargent compendiums. While the Carter book documents the technique and career of this master of light admirably, this publication stands as the one where Sargent's work seems most marvelously luminous. Though not an expert, I believe through comparison and quick makeshift measuring that the pictures are not only rendered most accuarately, but in some cases in better aspect ratios compared to the original sizes than many of the more expensive hardbacks. What a bargain!

The biggest mistake EVER made in a Dali book!
One cannot take seriously an author who -- incredibly -- reproduces a work by CHAGALL and attributes it to Dali! That's exactly what occurred in this book. No more needs to be said; pass this one by. Or buy it as a curiosity??

A fine introduction to Dali
First, I am obliged to say that the above review by Chimera is inaccurate. This book does reproduce an illustration by Chagall, but it is clearly labeled and attributed to Chagall with a paragraph upholding Chagall as the thematic antithesis to Dali. I'm a librarian and have placed this book in our collection. It represents a good value in that it has quality full-color reproductions of 100 of Dali's works and provides excellent, readable commentary on each work and on the phases of Dali's long career. I would reserve a fifth star for a higher quality coffee-table style book from Phaidon or Abrams, but this book is a very fine introduction to Dali for a very nice price.
