The information is packed in along with color photos
Stephen Swinburne's informative survey of the bobcat may present only 32 pages of detail, but the information is packed in along with color photos and provides enough natural history coverage to prove suitable for reports. The color photos throughout are interesting and educational.

A GREAT GREAT BOOK!!!!
I loved the author's book Coyote. I was hoping that this guy would write other books about other animals. I really felt like I was looking for the bobcat myself. I love learning about the bobcat's habits, what it eats, how it lives, and the history of the bobcat. The photographs by Susan Morse were amazing. Wow. I learned how hard it was to even see a bobcat. How did she ever get pictures like this? Well, she did! This makes me want to be a park ranger. Can't wait for the next book.

Informative and excellently written
My children (8 and 11) loved the way the author combined his own adventures with so much information about coyotes in this fine, energetic book. The author's lively prose also helps to make this a wonderful example of the new journalism as it can be applied to children's literature. We need more books like this, and I hope the author can move on from coyote to other cats, like bobcat and tiger, etc. Yesterday, we bought his wolf book, "Once a Wolf," which my son and daughter say is equally fantastic. I'm going to recommend that "Coyote" and "Once a Wolf" be used in our school's curriculum, which at times might be a little heavily weighted toward math and pure science. Glad "Coyote" is in paperback! If the author should read his own reviews at this site, my children want him to know he should keep up the good work.

A Fabulous Teaching Resource for all Elementary School Grade
I use this book in elementary classrooms as an anticipatory set for thinking about patterns before we make a math pattern game. It works as well with 6th gradeers as it does with 3rd graders. They begin to look at their surroundings using a different paradigm!

Fabulous
Safe, Warm, and Snug has beautiful illustrations which are conducive to drawing with your students. The information given is factual and science related, but they are presented in a fun way, that is, through rhythm and rhyme. There are several themes to explore, such as, camouflage, anti-stereo types in the animal kingdom, and adaptation. I guarantee this is a book you will enjoy as much as your students.

Unbeatable Beaks is Unbelieveable!
This is a great book for children. They learn about the different types of beaks birds have. The rhythmic style of the words makes it a great read aloud. The pictures are bold and colorful.

Balancing The Scales of Nature
A study in the perserverance and dedication of a group of people to bring the wolf back to its own enviroment in the wildernesses of Yellowstone Montanna. Full of information this book will elate you as well as sadden you, but the winner here of course is the wolf who once more runs free on his land.

Excellent overview of the wolf's history & current issues
Jim Brandenberg always brings the wolf into our homes vividly and with great skill through his photographs, and in this book, these exquisite photos are paired up with the informative writing of Stephen Swinburne. Swinburne covers an excellent range of topics in this short (but highly-informative) book, including the history of the wolf's extermination in this country, early conservationists, wolf behavior and social structure, myth-busting, the Yellowstone project, and the wolf's future prospects.

He brings in quotes and information from Leopold, Mech, Bangs, Askins, and many other notable figures in the wolf conservation movement to give correct facts and information. I wouldn't call this a book for younger children; it's written at perhaps a teenager's level, and younger children might find the statistics and assorted other information boring. However, Swinburne does cover the bittersweet story of wolves Numbers Nine and Ten, which personalizes the struggles wolves today face.

Swinburne manages to succinctly cover most of the important issues in this relatively brief book (about a half hour's read, perhaps 45 minutes,) and it's a great way to educate yourself or someone else on the basics of wolf conservation. Highly-recommended!

What a great book!
I just took a look at this book and was so impressed. The subject is fascinating, of course, but I'm especially taken with the clear, cogent writing, the terrific quotes, and the truly remarkable photographs. I definitely recommend this for any kid (or adult, for that matter) with an interest in wildlife.
