Foundations of T'Ien-T'Ai Philosophy: The Flowering of the Two Truths Theory in Chinese Buddhism

6th Century Chinese Buddhist thought, served in small bites.
This book will be of interest to those engaged in Chinese philosophy and Ch'an or Zen meditation practice. Swanson writes very well on an unquestionably difficult topic, presenting one particular slice (Two Truths Theory) of that great Buddhist systematizer, Chih-I.

China was a hotbed of sutras, treatises, and meditation practices in the Sixth Century. Zen practitioners will note that this was the time of the Third Patriarch, Hui-Neng. The most attractive feature of this presentation is that the reader gets some good looks at Chih-I's source material, the totality of Buddhist ideas and attitudes that prevailed in China at that time. The mechanical differences between the views of Hinayana and Mahayana on the same subjects are discussed in ways that are both convincing and thought-provoking.

You read this book with a marking pen in your hand. When you think you have "grokked" the text, you flip to the marvelous "system" charts in the back o! f the book for the summary look.

Meditators will easily recognize the sources of their methods in the many concepts presented.

Gaining Computer Knowledge
This book is great for the beginner. It covers Windows95, Office 97, Internet, Word 97, Excel 97, Power Point, Outlook, and integration between the applications. It is a great book for a beginner because it is very explicit and includes excellent illustrations. If you are familiar with a certain application, you can easily skip over sections and get to what you want to learn about. It also has sections that show how to the information from one application in another. It will quickly get you up to speed in using these applications. It would definetly be a good tool to use to gain computer skills for those just being introduced to Microsoft Office applications

Excellent book for writing resumes.
This is the best book to have when you are unemployed. I like it so much, I am sending a copy to my brother, now that he needs it. The book has excellent tips on what fonts to use, phrases and methods to avoid and information for interviewing. It covers the whole gamut with usefull information that really does work. You may think content on your resume is the most important, but getting it noticed is actually greater. If you use the wrong font or paper type(ie. gawdy flourescent colors), you will supply a potential employer with shredder fodder. The book warns you of these pitfalls and what should be included for highest probability of actually being read. I found, after using numerous items sugested, that I was getting much more response, when sending the resume to potential employers. I was also given many compliments on the composition and overall look of the resume. Granted, no resume can get you a job if you can't back it up, but the guidelines set forth in this book will get it looked at, and that is the beginning of the game. I have been with my present company for almost three years, after taking nine months to get employment. I can safely say that I do believe in the tips in this book, and if I need another job, will go through it again-cover to cover. Give copies to your friends that need jobs and you will help them out as best you can, second to actually getting them hired yourself. Good hunting.

State and Local Population Projections: Methodology and Analysis (The Plenum Series on Demographic Methods and Population Analysis)
Published in Hardcover by Plenum Pub Corp (2001)
Authors: Stanley K. Smith, Jeff Tayman, and David A. Swanson
Amazon base price: $95.00
Average review score:

"Population Projections" for those so inclined
The new book by Smith, Tayman and Swanson is the first in many years to compile the major components of small-area population projections(data sources, methodology and evaluation) in one place.

The book is particularly good in describing the fundamentals of population analysis - which many other articles, chapters and books on projections neglect. Additionally, important advanced elements of population projections that are not commonly touched on, such as special adjustments, are addressed nicely here.

The book further instructs the reader how to use projections objectively. Too often, forecasts that are not 100% accurate are dismissed. In fact, as the book describes, imperfect forecasts still provide considerable utility in presenting alternatives, promoting agendas, sounding warnings and providing a base for other projections. To this end, the book provides a unique service in not only describing how to make small-area projections, but what to do with them.

In addition to the conventional techniques and concepts described, the authors present the latest developments in the field of projections, including structural models, GIS applications and innovative evaluative techniques.

I would strongly recommend this book as both a textbook - particularly for demography, planning, and economics students, as well as a resource for professional planners, administrators and scientists that rely on population projections.

A must for those considering visiting the colorful Caribbean
Fielding's Caribbean" is an great guide to 31 island nations - I have found no other handbook that clearly and concisely lays out the important information that a traveler needs as well as Fielding's does. The ratings are accurate, and most of the better properties and restaurants on each island are included.

While this guide is highly recommended, it has a few shortcomings that need to be mentioned. Most notable is that Fielding's does not think of Cuba as part of the Caribbean, and there is no coverage of this country at all.

Second, the lack of web sites or e-mail addresses ...today, most hotels have e-mail and web sites, which make booking a reservation easy and cheap.

Despite these omissions, "Fielding's Caribbean" is a must for those considering visiting the colorful and exotic world of the Caribbean.

All you need to know and lots of good tips, too.
You'll wear this book out using it.I checked it on every island I have visited and found Swanson and Garrett were a step ahead of me with something to share that I didn't know. They're honest, with plenty of refreshing opinions of what's worth doing and what you should pass on. The book also gives good advice on values and undiscovered places. I've given this as a gift to friends bound for the Caribbean.

Misleading 4th edition
The book is great for step 2 and 3 etc.
However, do not buy it if you are looking for an updated 3rd edition, because it is essentially the same book with the same questions and text.

One of the best book i have ever read in my entire life
For all those who want to be good doctors,i have got a piece of advice which is Buy this book now!!!!.Though this book was written for the family practice review boards this is just as much worth for candidates who are preparing for usmle step 2 and step3.It contains all the basic information as what is done routinely in each and every case starting from the diagnosis to treatment. It covers each and every clincial specalities like medicine, surgery, gyna and obs, psychiatry, ethics and much more.I am preparing for step 3 right now and found this book worth a million dollars. The kind of information i gained from this book is amazing for instance
I always knew that the treatment of myocardial infarction is nitrates, aspirin, thrombolytic therapy and angiographic procedures like angioplasty. But after reading this book i came to know as what is exactly done after acutley treating this patient like you shift him to ICU and do a test for ejection fraction. Before discharging the patient which is usually 4-5 days after inpatient treatment you give the patient a submaximal stress test and ask the patient to come after 4-6 weeks ifthe sub maximal test is negative for the maximal stress test. You can ask the patient to resume his usual activity by 6-8 weeks and sexual intercourse by 4 weeks.
I gained lot of practical information like this.Excellent book!!

Excellent Review for USMLE STEP-3
If I could rate this book higher, I would. Although written for the Family Practice Boards it was an excellent review for USMLE STEP-3. All the areas that are presented appear on the USMLE exam. Of course one will have to suppliment this book with other sources, but not much. It was particularly helpful with the accompanying questions. It seems like alot of pages to read, but the style makes it fast reading, and consequently comprehension. If you have limited time, funds, even medical knowledge--this is the one book to purchase

A "wet dream" personified
...I paid a small fortune for this book only to read about the perfect vacation.

It is a photographer's dream come true and a fine insight to an area that I will (someday) be able to fly fish.

I'd buy another copy because of the sheer glory of the story, the binding and the (prior to GM) story of travel in the finest engineered car ever built.

If you have the $$$ buy it. Like Garrison Keillor, Mr. Swanson lives his dreams. Too few of us ever do.

Nor-way you can a-fjord not to read this book!
A book of the reality of fishing. The author captures the attraction and reality of fising for the true enthusiast. The reality; the anticipation of the preperation, the rush to fit pleasure into our crowded lives, the hurt of getting skunked while others succeed. The attraction; the instinct to hunt, the allure of pitting ones knowledge and skill against the instinct of a wild animal, and communion with the elements. All set in Gods own country, Norway. A lovely little book.
