left me wondering where the sequel was...
I found this to be a really enthralling book, imaginative and with compelling characters. I bought it for 50 cents at a bazaar, and it was one of the best uses of 50 cents I've found! I was somewhat disappointed in the ending, however, as it seemed to leave a lot of questions unanswered. I'm actually on Amazon.com today because I was wondering if there was a sequel (unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be...).

Still Intrigued
Oooh, did I burn up with jealosy when I realized that Trish Sullivan wrote this wonderful 400+ page book at twenty-six! It meant two things: 1) We are the same age and 2)Dern, I hadn't written it.

Sincerely, it is a wonderfully imaginative book that still tickles my imagination when I look up at the woods surrounding my house.

The first chapter is a doozy; you won't understand it at ALL until much much later in the book, but don't let it throw you--it's a wonderful read.

I do recommend it to adults, however, and older teens due to some, er, tricky sexual content. It's a very moving read, that draws you in completely into the powerful struggle which faces the protagonists.

This is one of the coolest sci-fi books I've ever read!!
This story combines almost every emotion you can imagine. You cry for the characters who have grow up and die. You feel angry for what they do to their children. Your soul rejoices when something good happens. You feel revulsion at the thought of the Pickled Brains. I picked up this book two summers ago at my brother's house. I didn't know what to expect, but now I tell everybody I know to read it. Thank you Ms. Sullivan for writing such an awesome book!

a compulsive read
This is a good one, and hard to put down. The story is interesting, and the characters are very strong. I did feel that it fell apart a little at the end, but the pleasure of the rest of the book made up for it.

Satisfying
Solid, satisfying and well-plotted, 'Someone to Watch Over Me' demonstrates an interest in identity and the body Tricia Sullivan shares with many of the cyberpunks and in particular, Pat Cadigan. But this is post-cyberpunk with better language - rich vivid and dense at times but never off the point.

Like some other recent SF writers she sets up characters who look like cyberpunk stereotypes (karate-kicking street kid with a heart of gold etc.), but who in fact turn out to vulnerable, messed-up and, well, human.

But it's missing something that I can't quite work out... perhaps a particular spark of originality that would have made it something really special.

Fun; filled with great ideas; impressive use of language!
This is one of the best sci-fi books I have ever read. It is a tightly-plotted, well written novel that takes you places you've never been, and makes you think about everything from this media-driven world, to the nature of the divine. All while being thoroughly entertaining!

By far the most impressive thing about this book for me was Ms. Sullivan's use of language. I found myself amazed on nearly every page by the freshness of her descriptions. Describing a sunset as being the color of ripe cantaloupe. Ah, to be able to write like that!

In short, this is a fun, fun book that is also quite thought provoking and full of genuine literary merit. Buy this one!

What is Tricia "Smoking"?
This book was difficult to read. Maybe I just have a brain tumor or something but I couldn't stay awake while reading this one. Tricia starts her book off with way too much jargon and slang for her setting. The characters don't make any sense when there is dialog. Maybe there is some reason for this in the book but I didn't make it that far.

Dreaming In Smoke
On a hostile planet filled with fast-evolving bacterial life, a group of would-be colonists are endangered when their ship AI goes on the blink.

Though the worldbuilding was full of original detail and the plot featured a lot of action, I found this book nearly impossible to finish. The writing was awkward and full of unnecessary exposition and "telling". The characters' behavior seemed nonsensical, unconnected to what was happening around them--often their reactions seemed weirdly casual, and at other times just inappropriate and lacking perceptible motivation. I couldn't relate to them, and because of that it became hard to focus on the convoluted plot.

I like the author's Someone to Watch Over Me, but I don't recommend this book.

Worth a read
This book was basically enjoyable and original enough to be interesting. The writing was not outstanding, but was not bad enough to reduce my enjoyment of the book. Unfortunately, the story sort of fell apart towards the end. It got difficult to follow and went on too long. After reaching a point that would have made a great ending, Sullivan opted instead to continue the story for another 20-30 pages. The result was an anti-climactic and disappointing end to an otherwise pretty good novel.
