Inspiring People
This book was an inspiration to me. I am going through a lot of hard times right now and this book has helped me see that my problems aren't as bad as I thought they were. One of my favorite stories would have to be "Miracle at the Mall" on page 314. There's always a different way God lets people know he cares and loves us. I look forward to future books by Alice Gray. Also, I would like to thank the people who allowed their stories to be published.

SPECIAL & ONE OF A KIND!
These short stories kept me turning pages until I was at the end. It opened my eyes up to the small miracles God is placing in my everyday life. I learned so much about the author along the way. She has a wonderful way of looking at difficult times in our lives as...well, "Moments of Grace". It brought me smiles and tears throughout every chapter. Faith, family, and relationships seem very important to me now, because I see how these miracles work in the author's life...and find them in mine too. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a heartwarmer!

Child's Work: Taking Children's Choices Seriously

A must have for worried homeschoolers
This book is a must have! It is the most reassuring, child affirming book that I have read on homeschooling. Whenever I have doubts about what I am doing as a homeschool Mum, I turn to Nacy's book to give me the ressurance that I need. This book shows you what kids are capable of when left to follow their instincts. Nancy's honesty is refreshing and the reader is left feeling like a friend of the family.

A must read for those who'd oppose Home-education.
An honest, well written assesment of what children are capable of achieving on their own without any coercion or interference from the adults in their lives. It thoughtfully explains how children, left to their own devices, are capable of learning about what ever subject they chose inspite of what some professional educators would have you think.

The homeschooling book which is most respectful of children.
Nancy Wallace's book has been in print for almost 10 years now, and there have been dozens of homeschooling books since - how-to's, diatribes, anthologies, talk with the experts, etc. - but there is no book which is more respectful of the intellgience and in-born learning quests of children. Almost uniquely, she looks at "homeschooling" (a label which does not do justice to the book) from the perspective of the children themselves, rather than from that of overanxious, or overeager, parents. Belongs in every home library dealing with "alternative education".

What might have been
It was a tragic loss to all of us when the International architectural style swept through.

Louis Sullivan and the Chicago School shows the richly decorated, interesting surfaces that were replaced by the International style's boring expanses of glass. Buy a copy of this book and savor images of buildings we don't make anymore.

Remembering forgotten heroes
If the anti-war movement is remembered at all today, it's through the distorted image of the foul-mouthed, rock-throwing, hate-filled protestor spitting on returning soldiers, an image designed to tar the very idea of honorable protest. This book is a valuable reminder of the truth about the anti-war movement: that it was largely made up of ordinary people appalled and deeply saddened by this country's actions in Vietnam. Did you know there were organized groups such as Businessmen for Peace? Housewives for Peace? Did you know that a majority of military bases in the USA published underground anti-war newspapers? You'll learn all that and more in this thoroughly researched history of a movement too many people would like to forget. Read and learn! In a society that would rather feel good about itself than examine its national conscience, it's good to know that some refuse to settle for complacency. Needless to say, this important book is currently out of print, like many of its kind - may they be reprinted soon!

Deng Xiaoping: Chronicle of an Empire

Unreadable by the layman
This book is far too dense to be read by anyone (like me) without a thorough background of recent Chinese history and politics. Even though I am comfortable with pinyin, no way could I keep straight the constant barrage of names zipping by. No explanation is ever given for various Chinese political terms, many of which were not familiar to me. And there is no historical narrative present to unite the material and keep it interesting.

If you are just an average joe/joan like me who wants to know more about China, don't waste your 28 bucks on this book.

Best book on the Deng Xiapoing era that I have found to date
This book, written by one of Hu Yaobang's staff, shows a very different picture of the players during this period of time than in books penned by western China Watchers. While Deng appears to have truly been interested in political as well as economic reforms, the hardliner coalition in the Chinese Communist Party was able to use his paranoia of personal attacks against him to veer him away from Hu Yaobang's progressive programs. Had he been able to see through the machinations of the hardliners, China might have been farther along in its modernization than it is.

I think the most interest aspect of this book is how it portrays Hu's successor, Zhao Ziyang. Western authors portray Zhao as a reformer. However, Ruan Ming shows us a schemer that is more interested in pushing Deng to the wayside and garnering full authority for himself and his "new elite". In 1989, the West saw a tearful Zhao supposedly working in the interests of the student protestors, symapthizing with their demands for democracy and reform. However, Ruan Ming shows us that this was a merely a tactic in his ongoing struggle to build power for himself within the party.

Overall, I think this book should be required reading for anyone interested in the inner workings of China's government. For once we have an account from a former member of China's government. I feel his account has painted a picture of China's key political players stripped of their masks. We are given an excellent example of how divided China's government is and how that relates to China's ability to develop into a "First World" Power in the future.
