Easily Learned Math Concept While Enjoying the Story
My son and daughter - aged 5 and 7 love this beautiful little book. The concept of continuous doubling of the number of ants that keep returning to the nest intrigues them. Although the book stops at 512, my children insisted that we keep doubling the number "up to infinity". Well, we kept on doubling until we ran out of paper!! The illustrations are wonderful, complementing this terrific children's treasure.

a wonderful story/math concept book for young children
my four- and five-year old children love this book. it's one they request over and over again when it's story-time at home after dinner or at bed time. they love the little ants who invade the neighborhood picnic and discover a treasure trove of treats that they eventually haul little bits back to their labarynthian home. each time they make the trip they bring more ants, each time doubling their number. my kids very painlessly learned their first multiplication lesson - doubling the number each time. a very cleverly conceived, thoroughly enjoyable book.

Praising the "512 Ants on Sullivan Street".
This charming, beautifully written and illustrated story helps young children understand the concept of "doubling" numbers. Each time the ants revisit the picnic, they bring more ant friends(in fact, exactly twice as many) to help haul the goodies back to their ant home. The simplicity of the story and each successive illustration with the ever increasing ant army subtly teaches the "doubling" concept. This is a must for any home library.

An excellent resource for the audit professional!
This book is a classic "hands on" audit reference; written with the same "how to" style as "Operational Profitability". I highly recommend this book.

A whole ecosystem in one book
When I launched into my MS field work in northeastern Minnesota, I was completely unfamiliar with the Great Lakes-Saint Lawrence transitional forest ecosystem, and therefore not a little unprepared! Fortunate indeed that I stumbled onto this little treasure.

Like all Sierra Club Naturalist's Guides, "The North Woods" starts with geology and soils, then ventures into plants, animals, and ecosystem structure. Simple photographs and line drawings are provided for some of the most common and especially important plant and animal species. If you're looking for a conventional field guide, however, this ain't it. Instead, "The North Woods" is a guide to communities and ecosystems. An excellent investment, and next to Heinselmann's "Boundary Waters" one of my favorites. -William Adair, Department of Fisheries and Wildlife, Utah State University

Teaching English in Japan

A very practical resource - take it with you!
"Teaching English in Japan" is a very practical resource for those who wish to teach English in Japan. It is not an anecdotal book, and the writing style is more of what you would find in a textbook.

There is some excellent advice on obtaining visas, and a good introduction to the various types of English teacher positions available, from the informal "coffee shop school" to the more formal JET program. The book gives a brief glimpse of Japanese history and culture, but that is not a majority focus.

Fully half of "Teaching English in Japan" is focused on practical, specific English teaching skills. There is a good introduction to pronunciation mistakes common to Japanese learners, as well as a solid coverage of grammar and tenses that occur in English, but not Japanese. A chapter is devoted to creating lesson plans, and another chapter introduces various teaching styles and tools.

If you want to teach English, but have never done so before, this book will give you a good idea of what will be expected of you. Don't expect to memorize every lesson in the book. It is a valuable reference to pack along to Japan, and pull out again and again.

excellent resource for esl teachers
for anyone considering going to teach english in Japan this is THE BOOK to start you on your journey. very practical resource which takes you through all the steps involved, from how to get a job, info on cultural issues, plus a whole section devoted to lesson planning for the novice teacher. I can also recommend 'Make a Mil-Yen' by Don Best and 'Learning to Bow' by Bruce Feiler.

At the Foot of the SE Asian Teaching Mountain
A good career book should do two things: stimulate your interest, and give you a push down the path to the goal. Unfortunately, Teaching English in Southeast Asia does only the former, and that not very well. It reads like an almanac, not a hands-on insider's guide. This book will be most useful to absolute newbies to the teaching AND Southeast Asian scenes; those with more familiarity with either area should look elsewhere. If you need to know the area code of your destination or want guidance on which TEFL course to take, buy this book. Otherwise, look to one of the growing number of other published sources of information on schools, teaching techniques and characteristic blunders made by foreign English students. Teaching English in Southeast Asia doesn't have nearly enough specific information. Too bad! This could have been a good chance to add a much needed resource to a badly under-covered subject. Better luck next time

Do not buy this book.
This book has numerous addition and multiplication errors aswell as grammatical ones. I counted more than twenty in the first 100pages, then I stopped counting. There were even several concepts that were incorrect. I would be ashamed to put my name on this book. Buy one endorsed by the National Society of Professional Engineers.

Comprehensive
I used this book in my preparation for the FE exam and had
no problems. I ended up passing. The book provided me with
a good comprehensive overview of the concepts tested.
