A journey for the reader!
Great book!!! I felt like I was right in the thick of things with the characters. I couldn't put the book down until I was done!! Very detailed and descriptive. Thank you.

Fiction Literature?
Impossible. Gregor takes you on a trip through Panama that makes you feel like the events happened exactly as portrayed. Gregor delivers a story of historical intrigue, captivating imagery of the Panamanian landscape, interesting characters, and a plot that keeps you on edge. Gregor takes you on the mysterious journey that is Hundred Waters in a way that captivates your total interest. Quite frankly, I couldn't put the book down. Hundred Waters is a winner!

Step into the unknown...
US Military Intelligence operation. 1967. Jungle. Viet Nam, right? That was my association until reading Hundred Waters. David Gregor took me on a dangerous journey into hot and unbearably humid Panama, and into the lives and minds of an odd collection of characters. Along the way I learned about disturbing historical events during the Spanish conquests that have mysterious ties to the present. I learned about covert intelligence strategies that I had no idea existed. Through Gregor's vivid writing and clever format, I felt like I had walked amongst the Panamanian people, seen the sights and smelled the scents of the undeveloped country, and taken those brave steps into the oppressive and foreboding jungle myself. I found myself pondering the dramatic climax as if it had really happened - or had it? This book is reminiscent of Apocalypse Now and Heart of Darkness, but it carries its own weight with its unique twists and turns and smart dialogue. It was an enjoyable and enlightening read and I strongly recommend it.

This Kant was a smart fellow
Like everything Kant wrote, this book is best read very slowly and with the realization that there are some things in it that you just won't understand. Kant is famous for his cryptic terminology and long, long-winded explanations; nevertheless, this book is undoubtedly more accessible to the average reader than his "Critiques." It is also where you'll find the famous Categorical Imperative, the argument for an absolute prohibition on lying, and the equation of goodness with duty. This is perhaps the defining work in the history of morality and ethics, but it's more of a curiosity than a realistic guide to life- and nobody knew that better than Kant himself.

Defies description
How can one write a review of Kant's work, short of publishing a paper? Even if you don't agree with Kantian ethics, this is still a must for anyone interested in philosophy, morality, and life in general.

Enter the Categorical Imperative!
Despite the sometimes overlength of some passages and explanations, Kant's immensely influential treatise on ethics is an incredible read. The formulations of his famous Categorial Imperative have become part of every day philosophical speech; we even capitalize THE Categorical Imperative where the original author did not! Not only an intriguing look at morality, but an examination of human freedom and dignity as well. Read this book!! (This is not to say that Kant is above criticism, but come on, I don't really have the room to address it all, do I?)

Jane Haddam never ceases to astound me.
Conspiracy Theory
Jane Haddam
St. Martin's, June 2003, 277pp.

Anthony Ross is the one of the most powerful and influential bankers in the world, and a member of Philadelphia's "High Society". Gregor Demarkian and Bennis Hannaford are attending a fund-raiser at his home in Bryn Mawr when he is shot to death on the front steps of his own home. Father Tibor Kasparian is the priest at Holy Trinity Armenian Christian Church on Cavanaugh Street, where Gregor and Bennis live. Simultaneously with Anthony Ross' death, a bomb goes off at the church and Father Tibor is injured.

Gregor Demarkian (a long-retired FBI behavioral science expert) is caught between the two crimes. As a witness and possible suspect to the Ross killing, he is asked to cooperate with the authorities, but his heart is on Cavanaugh Street with Fr. Tibor and his neighbors. It is only when Fr. Tibor comes home from the hospital and shows Gregor the obscene letter he received the day of the explosion that Gregor begins to suspect that the two events might somehow be related, although it seems far-fetched, even to him. When Ross' wife Charlotte and an FBI agent join the ranks of the murdered, Gregor is once again in the midst of a high-profile case.

Jane Haddam never ceases to astound me. She has taken the paranoia of Sept 11, conspiracy theories involving the Illuminati, the mind set of the rich and powerful, and the needs of the hangers-on to the Main Line social set, and woven them all into one dizzyingly convoluted mystery - again. And while she's done it, she has explored Philadelphia "society", the mind twists of the conspiracy theorists, and deepened the insight into three of my all-time favorite characters, Gregor, Bennis, and Fr. Tibor. From the deft needling of the CIA to the pointed one-liners scattered throughout the text, no government agency, society matron, fundamentalist, or conspiracy theorist is safe from Jane's barbed wit, and I loved every word, even the ones I wasn't sure I agreed with.

Excellent storytelling
He became a legend for his work in the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit, so much so, that when he retired he was asked to consult on some very high profile murder cases in Philadelphia. Gregor Demarkian attends a Main Line charity gathering in Bryn Mawr hosted by one of the most powerful and wealthiest bankers in the world, Tony Ross, who is murdered while greeting guests on the front stairs. Although he is technically a witness or a suspect the local police ask Gregor for help, which he gladly agrees to give.

When he goes home he learns that his church on Cavenaugh Street has been bombed and reduced to rubble. Since he is close to Father Kasparian, Gregor donates his services hoping to catch the perpetrator who did this horrific act. When Tony's wife Charlotte is murdered in a M.O. identical to that of her husband's death, conspiracy literature is found in her house. Gregor feels these three crimes are linked but finding the connection and a viable suspect will take all of his skills and a good deal of luck.

Jane Haddam has a wonderful sense of place and an ability to create fascinating characters. The author peels away the veil and spin doctoring of the very rich and powerful to show that they are not different than the average person in their desires and fears. CONSPIRACY THEORY is fast-paced and brilliantly plotted while displaying how the events of September 11th fit into the mindset of a conspiracy group who believes the Illuminati are controlling the country and moving towards a one world order. This is a mystery that readers will thoroughly enjoy.

Profound & Deep
After reading several Carl Rogers books and papers I was led to Martin Buber's works. Martin Buber was one of the most profound thinkers of our times. Not an easy read but a one well worth the time and effort. Illuminating and insight on the subject of good and evil.

A oasis in the dryness of my time
There is a sense that this is one of the most important book in my life. I have re-read it for the last 3 summers and i have found different things that i needed. Buber has a distinct method of communication that pulls from you who you are... i hear his subtlety in my ear even now. Buber is brilliant.

A splendid gift for gardeners
With a text that glows as brightly as the book's sumptuous photography, Growing Home is a triumphant celebration of "diversity." But Ms. Price's work is far from mere political correctness; every page is warmed by her deeply felt sense of community with her subjects. From the Russian-born botanist who declares that gardening "is my soul" to the Hmong mother preserving her Laotian heritage and feeding her extended family, these men and women represent "a vast, invisible network of people living full, well-integrated lives." Their serenity and common sense testify that "even in the midst of a culture nourished on fast foods and hurried entertainments, it is still possible to live in concord with the rhythms of the earth." Beautifully designed and produced, the book is a perfect gift for any garden enthusiast...I love it.

Every garden tells a story.
Growing Home is a real treasure of a book. Price has profiled a very diverse group of "transplanted" gardeners--mostly immigrants--who use gardening as a way of maintaining connections between their ethnic and cultural roots and their present-day lives in Minnesota. The profiles effectively turn the subjects' gardens into windows on their life stories, revealing the broader cultural meaning behind the simple act of tending a plot of land. Price skillfully balances the botanical, historical, and culinary backgrounds of the gardeners she profiles, and John Gregor's photographs are beautiful on their own. I think this book's stunning layouts and engaging stories make its appeal extend far beyond the world of Minnesota gardeners.

This is the stuff of Beach Boys singles!
Remember when a Beach Boys 45 had a surfing song on one side and a hot rod song on the other? Not to mention Jan & Dean? This was my generation--it was for us that Lee Iacocca later invented the Ford Mustang. Just picture if any of these guys was also an author, and you've got Henry Gregor Felsen. These stories are cautionary without being moralistic. They reminded us of the hazards of irresponsible driving, while avoiding condemning us in the manner of movies as "Hot Rods To Hell" and "Because They're Young". They represented an understanding, nurturing side of our WW II generation parents, who all too often seemed as if they hated and feared their own children. These books represented us as real people. Today we drive Tauruses, Luminas and minivans. It is our dog-eared copies of Felsen books, with the Beach Boys and Jan & Dean as a soundtrack, which take us back to our Deuce Coupe days. In his way, Felsen was the Mark Twain of Dead Man's Curve. Damn, I with they'd put these books back in print!

1950's teen car culture in a small Iowa town
This collector's edition of six Henry Gregor Felsen novels for teens mixes in just the right proportions of teenage alienation, fascination with automobiles, danger, and morality to deliver a well-placed message to teen readers of the 1950's. A must for anyone who ever sipped iced tea on a screened-in porch with the prettiest girl in town by day and drove hard and fast on dangerous dirt county roads by night. Titles include: Hot Rod, Fever Heat, Street Rod, Rag Top, Crash Club, and Road Rocket. Classic hotrod cover art by Ken Eberts, Rich Boyd, Jack Juratovic, Steve Pasteiner, Bill Neale, and Bruce Kaiser.

A great read
What a great read. I am so happy I tumbled onto author Jane Haddam. This is my second of her Gregor Demarkian novels and I am now going to go back to book one and read them in order.

What could be more intriguing? Bennis is invited to the 100th birthday of silver screen great, Tasheba Kent, who lives on a small secluded island off the coast of Maine with another silver screen legend, Cavender Marsh, a cousin of Bennis'. And, of course, when Bennis goes, Gregor goes along . . .

It seems Cavender was once married to Tasheba's sister (another screen legend from the 30s), and after her questionable death moved to the Maine island and isolation with Tasheba. The birthday party guests are a different lot (and include Cavender's estranged daughter from his marriage to Tasheba's sister)and once they are all on the island strange things start happening, starting with the first murder.

Who done it? A reviewer should never tell. In the case of this book, I was glad it was who it was--and I had a great time getting there.

For anyone interested in Sexual folklore- a must read!
I was forced to read this ethnography in college and it changed my worldview. Now, nearly six years after my read, it still has bookmarked a page in this slackened brain. It contains a thoughtful and sympathetic view of a culture rife with sexual tensions. It provides a valuable window on how sexual roles are developed and perpetuated. I'm very pleased this book is still accessible to the interested and advise anyone reading this to buy. If you need further convincing, or a decent argument in Freudian analysis, please e-mail me. In short, this is a book I offer to others but crave its return. It is a treasure in a host of dust-gathering anthropological ethnographies.

the most important book of my life
I read this book as part of a high school class, and the conversations within our class as a result of it were just amazing. a very deep and spiritual book. buber believes that there are three relationships people can have: relationships between man and things, between man and god, and between man and man. to put it simply, to have a relationship with things, you must go to them. to have a relationship with god, god has to come to you. but in relationships between man and man, we can come to each other...

The Ayin
Published in Hardcover by Xlibris Corporation (07 June, 2000)
Author: Gregor Former
Amazon base price: $32.99
Average review score:

A GREAT story that will keep you going!
This novel was handed to my by a family friend of Mr Former. This interested me greatly to read something by an author close to home. Needless to say I was not dissappointed at all with this book. The detail that Mr Former put into the characters and storyline was outstanding and chapter after chapter, it kept me wanting more. Computers are also my field and reading about the design and technilogical aspects of the Ayin kept me flipping the pages. Mr Former has created a fantastic tale that could very well become truth in the not too future! I look forward to a sequel if one should be written.

A UNIQUE LOOK AT THE FUTURE
THE AYIN should be required reading for the new millenium. It intertwines technology, spirituality, and consciousness. They are not such separate entities as one might think. The Ayin explores the notion of what tomorrow might look like and what our roles as humans could play coupled with that of thinking machines. It pushes the mind (and spirit)to go beyond what it may think is possible. It also includes some cool inventions for you technophiles.

I came across this book at the guest house where I was staying while travelling through the Angkor area of Cambodia. We all took turns reading it and had great conversations about it.

WOW, hold on tight.
Are you prepared to see the future? This masterpiece knits together technology, mysticism and spirituality into a rich, textured fabric. Mr. Former guides us through a bleak technological future, yet he provides glimpes of hope on the horizon. This book is quickly becoming an underground cultural sensation; read it today!
