An excellent sourcebook for healthcare providers
This book should be required reading for healthcare providers prior to working with transplant patients. As a healthcare provider, I found the information in this book to be invaluable in explaining the transplant process. This book covers all aspects of the patient's experience from diagnosis through coming home and the post-transplant years.

Friend of a Bone Marrow Transplant Recipient
People who have told me how helpful this book is are right! It explains the procedures so that those who aren't medical professionals can understand them. It explains how to understand test results, much of what the transplant patient will go through, and how to deal with the side effects and ramifications. It even offers suggestions of ways to help out patients and their caregivers and family!

I have never seen a more comprehensive, down-to-earth book about this subject. My friends and I strongly recommend it.

Bone Marrow and Blood Stem Cell Transplants A Guide
Bone Marrow and Blood Stem Cell Transplants: A Guide for Patients is well written and comprehensive in its coverage of the transplant process. I was fortunate enough to be a stem cell donor and this book helped me understand what I would be going through when donating, but more importantly it helped me understand what a transplant recipient must go through.

On Longing: Narratives of the Miniature, the Gigantic, the Souvenir, the Collection

amazingly insightful and infinitely engaging
This wonderful work has been indispensible in my research into collections and souvenirs. Stewart's ability to look at the long history of visual culture and bring in such disparate elements as Pop art and miniature manuscripts makes for a thoughtful and reasoned argument. Particularly notable is her need to cross barriers of medium, writing on everything from children's stories to painting to Tom Thumb weddings. An engaging read that rarely falls victim to theoretical rhetoric. The world needs more writers like Stewart who take their time, slowly unfolding their argument, surveying all aspects of culture, giving high and low culture equal weight.

great written work
I might add to the previous review, that this book is also of great interest for those that are interested in the study of objects and collections. Objects in this text are analysed in the miniature and the gigantic revealing their symbolic meanings and values. the analysis on the collection and the souvenir are also fantastic. Being a poet Stewart's book is a pleasure to read.

a great book for artists
On Longing is sensitively written and a must read for anyone interested in art or literature especially artists and writers. I would recommend Italo Calvino's Six Memos for the Next Millenium to anyone who enjoyed On Longing.

Marvelous
Susan Stewart is one of the most interesting writers currently producing work. Unlike most creative writers who venture into criticism or critics who venture into creative writing, Stewart functions well in both domains, producing work that is always provocative and intelligent. Yellow Stars and Ice brims with evocative, dense imagery that forces one to loveingly re-read each poem, understanding more and more dimensions of this complex work with each new reading.

Better books out there
I haven't used this book much at all. Books by Joseph Garcia-Prats and Dana Wechsler Linden were much more helpful.

The Best Guide through preemie parenthood
I am both a physician and a mother of a son who arrived 11 weeks early. This book has helped in every facet of my premature parenthood from breastfeeding (or, in my case, my ongoing attempts) to just feeling I was not the only preemie parent out there. In addition, the explanations of the various medical problems premature babies may face are excellent. Truly, a book that every premature parent would benefit from having.

How to Keep Your Sanity During an Especially Tough Situation
Our son was born at 26 weeks (3 months early) and was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until one day past his due date. We were given this book after he'd been there one month. Let me tell you what a life-saver it was! We had been given a "crash course" in the care delivered to a premature infant... very scary stuff. Wires, machines, noise, drugs -- and in the middle of it all this unbelievably tiny human being who is your child. This book took much of the fear away and instead educated us. Preemies don't stop being preemies when they come home! This book gives the technical data in an easy to understand format that is not condescending and also focuses on the emotional as well as physical needs of the baby. Additionally, it gives contacts and information on potential problems, how to spot them early, and how to handle them. There is also a good referal list in the back. I would recommend this book not only to preemie parents, but to anyone in contact with a preemie and their family. PS. As of this writing, our son is one year old and doing great!

Schutzhund Training, Language Problem
The book could be a great manual for Schutzhundtraining, if there was no language problem. The author uses only the English language for all commands. However it is quite common to train these dogs in German. Most top dogs are imported from Germany and have been trained in German for years. Schutzhund is also a German standard for dog training and has its origin in Germany. So far, at least in LA, I have not seen a Schutzhund that responds to English, all the Schutzhunds, I have seen respond to German only. The author should use German (or at least German and English) for the commands.

Great--But Not For Beginners
There aren't many books about Schutzhund available in bookstores or on the Web, and so Barwig & Hilliard's excellent volume must often function both as a manual for serious trainers and an introduction to the sport for the curious. It is in the latter regard that "Schutzhund: Theory and Training Methods" leaves something to be desired. There is no real overview of Schutzhund as a recreational activity, nor is there any well-reasoned explanation of why anyone would want to pursue a Schutzhund career with their dog. A curious non-participant who reads the book would probably decide that Schutzhund is much too arduous and complex to be any fun at all. While Schutzhund certainly is demanding, the rewards of training and owning a Schutzhund-titled dog--the "process", one might say--is where the joy lies. The authors could have made a much better case in this regard.

On the other hand, this book is a gold mine for the serious trainer. While different training directors espouse different methods for schooling dogs in Schutzhund, Barwig and Hilliard consistently advocate time-honored methods in all three Schutzhund disciplines (tracking, obedience, protection) that are neither too trendy nor too harsh. A dog (and handler!) with the basic "equipment" to compete in the sport would not likely go wrong by following any of the advice given here. Considering the bewildering array of training methods that already exist in the Schutzhund world, this is a remarkable accomplishment in itself. And when coupled with the authors' accessible prose style, this is an important book that should not be overlooked by any Schutzhund trainer--or any curious reader willing to read between the lines.

A great book on Schutzhund!
This book offered a clear explanation of what Schutzhund is, and what it isn't. The training technique is easy to understand, and their mention of what to do with a problem dog is particularly helpful. A great book for anyone interested in Schutzhund, or even wishing to obedience train a pet.

Martha Stewart's Hors D'oeuvres handbook
I have used this book several times, made me want to have a party to try out these wonderful recipes. Full-color photos which show you what the food is supposed to look like; and well labeled -- telling you what page the recipe is on. Such creative ideas for snacks and treats, "why didn't I think of that?". Recipes are well detailed, easy to follow, good print (making it easy to read) with special notes on pages telling you where to get "hard to find items" and techniques explained. I think this book is not necessarily for beginners, but, those who love to cook and love to take time and pride in their cooking. Everytime I have made something from this cook book I get "waves of praise". The back of the book has "the Guide" which gives additional information from planning a party to taking Horsd'Oeuvre to a party. Equipment and ingredients are explained, as well as, a source list. I recommend this book to anyone, again, who loves to cook. It is right up there with the other Martha Stewart cookbooks, great!

Martha is the Queen of Hors D'Oeuvres!
When I am ready to don my apron to prepare for a cocktail or dinner party, this is the first book that I pull off the shelf. I flip through the beautiful and tantalizing photos in the front third of the book, find what I want to try, and then go on to the correlating how-to page. The recipes are easy to follow, some more involved than others, but depending on how much time you have, it's easy to make a choice on what to serve. The last chapter entitled The Guide is filled with a wealth of information - menus, an index of culinary utensils, description of uncommon and exotic foods and spices, equipment and food sources and a directory of specialty shops. I also like the built-in fabric book markers - great to mark favorite recipes.

This informative book has been a welcome addition to my cooking library and I recommend it to anyone who loves to entertain. It will also make life easier for those who are sometimes forced to entertain whether they like to or not!

A must have for all Entertainers!
The Hors D'Oeuvres Handbook by Martha Stewart is filled with creative appetizer recipes and spectacular pictures that make you want to run to the kitchen and start cooking. Stewart is, no doubt, an authority on entertaining and this book shows how she has evoluted from the first Hors D'Oeuvres book she wrote in the early 80's. I have tried several recipes, and they were all great, specially the Crispy Asparagus Straws (Fresh Asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, fresh parmigiano and then several sheets of phyllo dough), and the Mini Bisteyas (Morrocan Chicken Phyllo Pies).
My friend who owns a catering company uses this book all the time and is having lots of success with the new ideas.
If you want to impress your guests or family, this book has many many recipes that will make you show off your kitchen skills.

Almost Paradise
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Ballantine Books (September, 1988)
Authors: Susan Isaacs and Stewart Steven
Amazon base price: $4.95
Used price: $8.01
Average review score:

very good love story
Almost Paradise was the reason I became a fan of Susan Isaacs. It's a completely different book than her later ones- the books Isaacs wrote after this were all very good, funny and suspensful, and quick paced. But Almost Paradise is special for me, maybe because when I read it I had no idea what to expect: and what I discovered was a talented, funny, intelligent writer who decided to write a love story in her own unconventional way: and what a love story it is!

The story of two people (Jane and Nicholas) who seem to belong in the real world, who seem to share problems with the majority of people, and yet...the characters that Susan Isaacs creates become something different, they become people that'll stick in your mind, people that you'll think about long after you close the book. An emotional, deep and at the same time down-to-earth and funny love story- what else can you ask for?

Read this at your own risk--it becomes your world!
I am an ardent fan of Susan Isaacs, but I must say that as far as characters go, this one is by far the best. Tracing the two main characters back to their great-grandparents, Susan Isaacs creates a love story about two real and painfully human beings. I came to love these characters. I simply couldn't put the book down; it became an obsession.

Be prepared to lose yourself in this novel. Also be prepared to laugh aloud, to feel your heart soar and your heart ache, and definitely bring a hankie.

The Funniest Woman In America is NOT a Standup Comic!
In fact, the funniest woman in America is available to you in book form. I have read 2 of Susan Isaacs' novels (Lily White and Almost Paradise), and I am captive to her eye for hilarious detail, her fantastic characters, and her page-turning plots. Isaacs' writing is intelligent and thoroughly enjoyable. Instead of reading this review, I highly suggest you click 'buy' and start enjoying!!!

Do not waste your money
The recipes are time intensive and many are tasteless. Health food does not deservice the bad rap.

Allergies Lead Me to Soy
At the recommendation of my grandmother, I purchased this book for help in preparing recipes prepared with soy. I was diagnosed with many allergies and I can no longer eat dairy products, corn, mushrooms, etc. (that's only the beginning, the list goes on!). I knew about tofu but I didn't know what to do with it. Using this book as a guide, I prepared a spinach lasagne following the ingredience for spinach ravoli (pg. 35). It was delicious, if I don't say so myself! I would definitely recommend this cookbook. I like using it as a guide to help with new ideas in food preparation. Bona Petite!

Food-Snob Friends
I loved this book. I've been a vegetarian for years, and have had to live with the scorn of my food-snob friends, many of whom wouldn't come to my house for dinner parties. So I cooked a feast of Ginsberg's recipes and impressed them all-finally. The Chinese food is especially tasty, although the biscotti was terrific. I brought it to work and everyone ate it up.
